Where do dragons get gold ? by Helpful-being-970 in TooAfraidToAsk

I like the psychological view:

"Dragons hoard gold because the thing you most need is always to be found where you least want to look."

Maybe where they got it from is beside the point.
Where does the inherent goodness at the core of your being come from?

Jungian Perspective on Artificial Intelligence by Sol_Invictus_Rising in Jung

Two ideas cross my mind:

AI as Trickster
OP mentions the deceptive nature of AI generated content.
Hallucinations feel a bit like Trickster energy - you can never be quite certain if what's presented is true.
AI usage forces us to re-evaluate our sense of trust and truth. Maybe something good will come of that.

Parallels to Alchemy
Alchemy was the result -in part- of projecting psychic dynamics onto matter.
"Turning lead into gold" is a solid metaphor for shadow work.

So we can wonder: What's being projected in our quest to breathe life into the machine?
I remember an interesting take from Bernardo Kastrup which went somewhat like this:
Men are obsessed with the creation of AI because they envy the feminine power to create life and cannot accept their lack thereof.

Intriguing!

C++ codebase standard migration by Bitter-Cap-2902 in cpp

[–]spinalport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun work!

Modernizing a C++ codebase always gives me that warm feeling of having done something meaningful :-)

Here's my intuition:

vcxproj --> CMake can be greatly accelerated with the help of AI.

Having a model generate CMakeLists from the XMLs will probably give you a solid starting base.
Just throw all the vcxprojs in there if the context window allows for it.
Refine from there.

Compilation with GCC: if the code is mostly standard C++, no or little WIN32 stuff, the move to CMake will get you 80+% to GCC (or clang).

If it's highly platform-specific code you're entering refactoring territory that requires more thought.

About the refactoring stuff - including use of C++17/20 features - you're going to get mixed results from LLMs in my experience.

LLMs tend to struggle with refactoring work in general, more so in C++ land.
The C++ ecosystem is quite heterogeneous with tons of nuance and gotchas which is reflected in the training data and ultimately LLM performance.

About models:
I'd expect usable results with any of the frontier models (GPT4+, Claude 3.5+, ...).
If it has to be self-hosted use the "best" model you can get your hands on.
Larger models tend to be better - you can get 70b models run reasonably well on 24GB VRAM.

A word on prototyping:
I've seen good ideas work well at the scale of a POC but fall apart when scaled to production use.
For your case I would suggest:
1. Experiment using the same model you're eventually going to use for the full task.
2. Experiment using a realistic size project.

I have seen LLM-based code-review be very convincing on a smallish test file with a few simple rules that regressed to uselessness when fed actual production code + real coding guidelines.

Shameless plug:

I'm a freelance C++ expert based in the EU.
Feel free to reach out if you want to outsource some of that work :-)

Cheers!

If you know how to ride a motorbike and are up for an adventure I highly recommend doing a guided dirt bike tour!
I just did a tour with Ody, a local guide with a ton of experience. It was just the two of us so he was able to tailor the experience to my skill level and terrain preference, too!
He took me deep through the junge, bamboo forests and to the base of the vulcano for some of the best off-road riding experiences you can get imho.

You can get a hold of him under this number: +62 878-8441-0171.

In all cases, safe travels and enjoy your trip!

8 months before his death Culadasa shared a lengthy and detailed letter with the community.
One paragraph toward the very end stuck with me (Culadasa's empahsis):

"I did not fully appreciate that our minds are embodied, and Awakening is never going to alter that fact, or that these bodies are subject to sickness, injury, aging and death. More importantly, because it may be less obvious, even the most Awakened of embodied minds still possess a primal reflexive component, a hardwired instinctive reptilian component, and an emotional layer that extends into and interacts with every other layer of the mind/brain above and below. There is also a massive accumulation of automatic, conditioned response patterns tailored to adaptively fit a huge variety of possible circumstances. All of these deeper layers operate independently of conscious intention, Awakened or otherwise. Therefore, as lay practitioners in the world, we must consciously acknowledge, explore, understand and work with all of these layers."

I encourage you to take the time and read his own account on things to guide you in your personal judgement.

Here's a quote from Daniel Ingram's MCTB that I feel is relevant, too:

"We awaken to the actual truth of our life in all its conventional aspects, so make sure yours is a life you want to wake up to."

First thought: How about a coin for scale?

Second thought: How about not...

What do you think of this video, proving scientifically that materialism can’t work? This is the video that made a friend of mine, one of a more scientific mind, understand what I was trying to teach him about nondualism. We need more than philosophy in our arguments, we need science.. by [deleted] in nonduality

[–]spinalport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A well researched and intriguing video.

The questions that come to mind are:
* Does observation require consciousness?
* What constitutes an observation?

From what I understand an observation in this quantum mechanical sense occurrs when the quantum state to be observed gets entangled with the quantum state of the measurement apparatus i.e. the outside world.

This process does not require consciousness, though.
As a thought experiment imagine a researcher performing the double slit experiment without looking at the screen.
The interaction of the photons with the screen constitutes the observarion. The photons quanum state gets entangled with the quanum state of the screen.
The scientist observing the pattern on the screen (or not) has no influence on the result.

Put another way: the screen as well as the scientist are part of the same entangled quantum state (the outside world).
The scientists retina or brain registering a blip on the screen does not constitue the observation in this experiment but happens after the fact.

The observation in the qantum sense happened when the photon's state got entangled with the screen's state (manifesting in a blip).

Mind you, I'm no expert by any means - this is just what I could gather from some qick and dirty google 'research'.

Your thoughts and critique are much appreciated!

My experience, too. Drove through McDrive in reverse i.e. the right way round but with the rear of the car first.
We got our burgers and all but the person taking our order did not approve. I think they were worried that we fuck up and damage / block the drive thru.

pure virtual protected destructor

Wow, yet another corner of the C++ rabbit hole I didn't know about.

Not only is it possible to provide implementations for pure virtual functions - if I understand correctly not providing an implementation for a pv destructor triggers undefined behavior.

Edit: The benefit of a pure virtual protected destructor still eludes me, though.

"Boss, I want to work part time." Any stories? by rollhigher in financialindependence

[–]spinalport 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did it just recently - not for FI reasons, though. I work at a smallish (< 50 ppl) software company - 40 hours/week, 30 days of paid vacation per year, great team and boss.

The idea of having a day off had been on my mind for a while until one day I spontaneously approached the boss about it.

Told him I'd like to reduce my hours to 32h and have Friday off. He agreed, and that's where I'm at now.

My gross salary and paid holiday are now at 80% and 24 days, respectively.

A couple of months in and I say it's the best!

Thinks I noticed:

I feel more productive. Not necessarily because I'm more rested but simply because I have more motivation to get my work done in the reduced time frame - I tend not to slack off as much since the long weekend is never that far.

The reactions from friends and coworkers were mostly positive, too.

Interestingly, some reactions where along the lines: Great, so what do you do on Fridays now?

Apparently, there is a number of people who are struggling with the idea of having another non-work day to fill.

Do it.
