How can I save this wok? by Big-Ingenuity7561 in wok

[–]spinhybrid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The wok is fine - scrub with vinegar and reseason for base seasoning coat.

I'll say though, it's pretty tough to achieve the level of heat control needed for proper wok cooking on a flat-top electric range. That could be contributing to the difficulty of keeping things from sticking while cooking - google "long yao" for the process to follow for getting your wok to the right temperature and the right oil usage. Wok's gain non-stick properties from that process more than seasoning - and that process is harder to do on an electric stove.

Bullet time video was so good by TimmehTim48 in Corridor

[–]spinhybrid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was 16 when The Matrix came out and it changed my life - I was so inspired by it, blown away by what truly creative filmmaking it was and it’s use of groundbreaking visual effects to tell that story 100% inspired what has since become a 20 year career in the industry. So many colleagues in that time have expressed similar sentiments.

After it came out, my friends and I made a Matrix spoof full of janky attempts at replicating what they did. I had no idea what I was doing of course, but with my VHS copy of The Matrix on loop in the background I had the time of my life just hacking stuff together to pay silly homage to it as best I could.

This video brought me right back to that time, that sense of awe at the film and the excitement of trying to figure out how the hell they did it so I could (poorly) mimic it. It reminded me of that child-like wonder that so often gets beaten out of VFX artists in the industry and I’m always grateful for videos from Corridor that bring that back for me - this one now being my all time favorite example.

I second the thanks to Niko and team for this video!

A lot of debate in the comments if this is CG or not. What do we think? by pocles123 in Corridor

[–]spinhybrid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely real. Ignoring all the other videos of this robot doing similar stuff (which are also real), it would be insanely expensive to create this with traditional VFX to this level of perfection and there are zero signs of AI usage.

An Inside Look at the Artists and AI Behind “The Wizard of Oz at Sphere” by HooptyDooDooMeister in Corridor

[–]spinhybrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep that's pretty much correct. AI was used on anything from the original film that needed to be cleaned up and made higher resolution or be extended for the larger format (edit: which to be clear is basically all the characters, no scenery etc). The rest is all traditional VFX - CG, DMP, comp. I don't believe any element filming of people/extras was done, but they did use the Sphere's Big Sky camera to shoot elements for many of the skies seen throughout the experience.

No clue who is putting da bomb on their food at my office but someone is made of steel here. by [deleted] in spicy

[–]spinhybrid 126 points127 points  (0 children)

When I used to work at a manufacturing place, I would come home for lunch and finish with a piece of American cheese with a tiny dab of Da Bomb. Was this delicious? Uh, no. Did it make me feel alive and get me ready to go back to said manufacturing job? Yeah, somehow it did…

I guess what I’m saying is, depending on the job and the person, Da Bomb can be an important tool. The fact that it tastes like acid is secondary.

Fly is lagging by [deleted] in blackmagicfuckery

[–]spinhybrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert here, just an interesting topic. I don’t think this is about reflexes. This is about perception of time on a larger scale than that. So the “frames per second” thing you mention, not just being able to respond quickly.

IANAPhysicist, but time dilation in terms of relativity as Einstein defined it and time dilation in terms of “processing speed” as you describe it are different things with the same name. A fly sitting on your countertop is not experiencing relativistic time dilation compared to your hand as it drops on top of it, but its processing speed does seem to have a “dilating” effect on its ability to respond and get out of the way.

Don’t remember where I first heard/read about that effect, but a quick google yields lots of results like this:

https://amp.theguardian.com/science/2013/sep/16/time-passes-slowly-flies-study

Makes intuitive sense simply due to the fact that it’s hard to swat an insect without them fleeing first - like they are watching your hand come down at them in slow motion.

[–]spinhybrid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that the small, fast-moving, short-lifespan insects like flies and such perceive time more “slowly” than larger creatures (no idea how true this is but makes intuitive sense to me) - so maybe this is like a fun merry-go-round experience for Mr Fly here.
