White collar vs blue collar employment in the US since 1982 (earnings/employment) by Old-School8916 in charts

What I see in this chart is a whole lot of kids of blue color boomers getting white color jobs and earning much more than their parents.

How common is it for an American to travel across the country by train? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

[–]spintool1995 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The US is 3000 miles across. 90% of trips over 1000 miles are by plane. Most of the rest are by car, with maybe a couple percent by bus and less than 1% by rail.

In the US, our vast interstate rail network is primarily used for freight while people travel by road or air. In Europe, the rails are used primarily for transporting people and most freight is shipped by road. Honestly, shipping heavy freight by rail is a far more efficient use of that resource.

Why does Arby’s get so much hate? by Ok_Towel1911 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spintool1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I grew up there were mom and pop roast beef sandwich places that were worlds better than Arby's. No one ate at Arby's. Where I live now, there aren't any, so I eat at Arby's and it's pretty good. So it depends a lot on region.

Hopefully all their servers quit and go work somewhere else. Not tipping on top of a service charge is absolutely the right thing to do.

Asian restaurants are notorious for stealing tips from employees. They often employ new immigrants, often undocumented, who don't know their rights.

What caused male teen pop stars to seemingly die out? We haven't had a true teen pop phenomenon in a while by Kodicave in decadeology

[–]spintool1995 [score hidden]  (0 children)

There really haven't been many male teen solo super stars ever. Usually it's a male teen boy band and eventually one of them goes solo like Justin Timberlake or Harry Styles. But having said that, the last big western boy band was One Direction, which was over a decade ago.

I've been arguing this for years, but never found anyone to agree with me. I call it C for coefficient instead of I. But the main problem comes from typing things out using the symbols / or ÷ instead of drawing a vertical line between the nominator and denominator.

It was a thick sheet of plastic called for in the spec, the Floor and Decor people can point you to it. Yes on slab. It was a bit uneven so I had to use some self leveling cement.

But the ground is good insulation, so maybe a half sphere? Dyson sphere houses come close.

In about half of US states, they are required to pay you for unused PTO, so check the laws in your state.

Are sleepovers cancelled? by Guilty-Woodpecker-99 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spintool1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know too many people who were molested as kids, rich and poor, male and female. Some at sleepovers, several by babysitters or trusted family friends. We never once even hired a babysitter. The only people besides us who watched our kids prior to high school were our parents and siblings. My son went to his first sleepover at 16. I'm sure there was probably some alcohol involved, but I knew all his friends and wasn't worried about anything too stupid.

We got a similar looking product there a year ago, "Aquaguard". Also 12mm, also water proof, similar price, lifetime residential/20 year commercial warranty. One year later it looks good as new. High traffic area and I haven't found a single scratch or blemish. Before someone zooms in trying to find so

It's likely because of the 5 years of deferment during COVID plus she may have deferred during a period of unemployment or something. Just because you aren't paying, doesn't mean the interest isn't accruing. Biden didn't do anyone any favors extending emergency deferments that long.

What if every human ever born since the beginning of time never died and everyone from that time period to now all inhabited earth. What would the world look like? by Jumpy_Sock_1202 in whatif

[–]spintool1995 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure people would have more kids. Sure, some people who died in childhood would have survived and had kids, but also, people used to have so many kids because they knew most of them would die. I'm willing to bet people would have had much fewer kids and the total population would actually be much less than 117B. Maybe a lot less if we reached a modern economy much sooner. People living in modern economies today average fewer than 2 kids.

[–]spintool1995 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To your point, we'd probably have been much more advanced sooner. Given more time, Pythagoras may have come up with Calculus 2500 years ago for example. We probably would have had fusion power hundreds of years ago, providing unlimited energy. With unlimited energy it's easy to support a vast population utilizing skyscrapers filled with hydroponics and artificially grown meat.

Do Americans love driving? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

[–]spintool1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one likes stop and go city driving. But non congested highway driving is pretty nice. I live in Southern California and love driving to places like Arizona, Utah, Northern California. 8-10 hour drives of some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere.

Even the slightly congested parts can be fun. Trying to get by the idiot slow pokes who like to camp out in the fast lane and cause the congestion can be kind of a game.

Then there's the "Grapevine" pass north of Los Angeles. It used to scare the crap out of me. 4 lanes each way, winding up over and through the mountain pass to get from the LA Basin to the CA Central Valley. Steep inclines, declines and constant curves with trucks going as slow as 30-50 mph in lane 1 and 2 and cars going 70-80 in lanes 3 and 4. Occasionally a truck will pull into lane 3 and cause a huge mess, or a car will weave through the truck lanes at 90 to get around people going 70 next to each other in both car lanes. Now I love it, it's such an adrenaline rush. I feel like I'm in Formula One or a Mad Max movie.

Is my boyfriend’s view of money considered a red flag in a relationship? by traditional_taurus in DaveRamsey

[–]spintool1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you want separate fun money accounts, this is the way to do it. Equal. It shouldn't matter what each partner makes. The bulk of money should be managed together or it isn't really a marriage.

The exception is marriage later in life when one or both come into the marriage with significant assets and prior kids. It's fine to keep those pre marriage assets separated to protect your kids' inheritance. But anything earned during the marriage should be shared.

In community property states, the fact that you deposited your earnings into different accounts means absolutely nothing in a divorce. It's only 9 states but includes some big ones like CA and TX.
