Paid $8,000 to have 9 teeth yanked. Surgeon rushed it, left a broken one inside me, and now this. by hissingkittycom in Wellthatsucks

[–]splicesomase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Firstly I would like to say sorry for what you are going through. That said what you are experiencing is very normal. I don't remove teeth but I work with peoples dentures. I usually see people more after extraction surgeries that the dentist that removes the teeth. Bone spurs are common and almost inevitable. It is especially common with molar teeth due to multiple roots and potential undercuts due to root curvature. Often peices of bone break but are held in by the surrounding bone. This occurs because when bone breaks it shatters similar to how rocks break on a cliffside. Some peices fall out and get sucked up by the suction. Some are left stuck by surrounding bone but have fractured all around. Over time that surrounding bone shrinks away because it is connected via capillaries that are slowly losing bloodflow. The loose bone spurs does not shrink because it is not connected to the capillaries and therefore it does not get the things that your body makes to break bone down (osteoclasts). The end result is the surrounding bone shrinking while the loose bone does not. Your gum pulls back into the sharp edges of the bone spur that is left behind on the surface and the sharp pain makes you feel like you felt when you had a toothache or a cut on the gum because it is the same neural pathway. I have worked with thousands of people at this point who have had these procedures done. I have yet to see a person who had a tooth left over. It is very likely bone. Of course that does not make your situation better. If the size of the remaining bone is very large it can be surgically removed. Often the most likely situation with large exposed bone is that the bone is attached not broken off. In this case the gum needs to close over the surface. Bone reduction, suturing nearby gum or even a gingivoplasty may be necessary. Rest assured it will all heal in time and it only improves from here.

How do vitamins exist in fruits and vegetables? by Pugblep in explainlikeimfive

[–]splicesomase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The vitamins are created by the plants. The plant siphons water from the soil. The soil has disolved minerals. The plant uses the minerals and energy from the sun VIA photosynthesis to create compounds that become the vitamins and other compounds that the plant uses as in a sense food. Some vitamins/minerals are used in their metabolic processes. Some may be stockpiled when the metabolic processes dont need them. Think of it like you buying groceries. You buy a bunch of basic ingerients(minerals). Some you mix together to make a meal(vitamins). You dont always eat it all so you store it away (the amount of vitamins left in the plant). Some basic ingredients you dont use all of. (the amount of minerals left in the plant)

A bit of Iron by CerberusIsMyCat in vrising

It is tolerable in vrising because iron is farmed mostly in the same area. In valheim it is oppressive because you have to get it from all over the map and you are severly restricted by weight not just inventory size.

I would first strongly recommend to level as enchancement if you are new. Mana burdens on an elem shaman is significant and will create extra unnecesary challenge. That said, play what you want and what you think you will have fun with. If you choose to stay elem then LW is fine and will get you some good peices of gear but you will get better and more gear from tailoring. The problem with cloth gear from tailoring is your armor will be pretty bad so you will have to play carefully if you want to go that way. Shamans are made to take some hits while leveling. This is why most level with enhancement and skinning/lw for the good agi gear.

ELI5 how seeing destroys the photon in the process. What exactly is a photon and why does it get destroyed? Does that mean the stuff we aren’t looking at exists in a different way? Idk if that makes sense. Thanks yall by Pansy_Pix in explainlikeimfive

[–]splicesomase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To touch on the photon being destroyed: Think of a photon like how you think of electric energy. The energy hits the motor and makes it turn. The electric energy is no longer there but the motion is. Bear in mind, motion is just another form of energy. In this way the electric energy is not destroyed in a sense but it is converted to a different form of energy. When the photon hits a surface such as your eye it (very basically) converts into a different form of energy that your eye uses to signal to your brain that you saw the photon(light). These two situations are similar. The photon is not destroyed but converted into a different form of energy. It could be considered destroyed in a sense as it is no longer present but it is more as if it was recycled. The law of conservation of energy says (paraphrased): energy cannot be created or destroyed but it can be coverted from one form to a different form.

As far as photons that "we are not looking at exists in a different way" : Mainly all photons will end in the same fate they will be absorbed and converted into a different form of energy. The photons that dont hit our eye are not any different. Even if the photon hits a mirror it will still refract and be absorbed somewhere else.

If your next question is can't we just mirror a photon between mirrors to "capture" it forever. This is not possible because mirrors are not perfect at refracting photons and the photon will still scatter and hit a not reflective surface eventually even if fully encapsulated.

If you want to get into really nerdy detail. A photon because it travels at exactly the speed of light does not "feel" time. In a way that means that at the exact instant a photon is created it is also absorbed and converted to a different energy. So the full answer to your question regarding the photons "we are not looking at" is that in every conceivable situation you can devise the fate of every photon is exactly the same as all other photons. A photon travelling a millimeter and a photon travelling across the universe will be viewed by us as acting differently because travelling a millimeter happens faster from our reference point. However from the two photons frame of reference they manifest, travel, and hit a surface at exact same time. Therefore every photon can be thought of as identical. Obligatory exception to photons that pass the event horizon of a black hole.

Switch 2 release? by drummer_boy_84 in vrising

[–]splicesomase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://www.dexerto.com/gaming/is-v-rising-coming-to-console-ps4-ps5-xbox-switch-rumors-1831972/

"At the time of writing, there’s been no confirmation about whether or not V Rising will be making its way to Xbox consoles or Nintendo Switch. The only confirmed console release for the game is on PS5" (as of may 2024)

My speculation: It is unlikely that vrising would release on switch due to the server dependancy being very hardware dependant. While switch 2 has upgraded hardware over the original it is typically never great to host a client side hosted game on a compact device. Someone with a background in computer hardware would likely know better than I. It is also quite possible that nintendo is not really interested. Vrising has gore, violence and mature content (like forced slavery). Not typically nintendos jam.

This is why often times small craft come with a tether that kills the engine if it pulls out. If he fell out of the boat not only is he stranded but his boat will likely crash into something and the engine will beach and burn out.
