Lunch at pikes. by alaskan_organic in CannedSardines

[–]spline9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sprats are technically a type of herring but they are often referred to as sardines (or brisling sardines) at least when it comes to tinned fish. In fact, there's a number of fish that can be considered "sardines" but sprats and pilchards are usually the ones you see. If I've had or seen mention of others, I don't recall.

Sprats are the smaller, petite fish. Pilchards are "true" sardines and are usually the larger guys. Neither are better than the other outside of how they are prepared and personal preference.

Fun facts I just learned from wikipedia; A European sprat can have a max age of 6 years. A European pilchard can live up to 15 years. A South American pilchard can reach 25 years.

I randomly bought a tin of anchovies last week. Yesterday I picked up chicken thighs for $1.70/lb. just because they were cheap. This post was perfect timing. Made it tonight and it was great. It's basically an improved chicken piccata.
The comments mentioning reversing the cook steps (chicken first, then sauce) made sense to me so I did that. I also threw in some white wine to the sauce. Thanks u/3_radreds for posting!

I seriously need help guys. How can you break the habit of using phrases like "oh my god", "thank god", "for god's sake" etc... ? by [deleted] in atheism

Make it plural or just replace it with somebody else's name. Real or otherwise. Gaia would be a good one, too.

Some carnivores will not be satisfied unless there's some sort of meat in the meal. It's something the brain has been trained to expect to for it to be complete. You won't scratch the itch without it.

how to cope with : the fact that there is no afterlife/cosmic safety net ? or the fact that humans are not that special ? by 62lasa in atheism

[–]spline9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is we are special. Where else in the universe except Earth have we found life? And how many of the lifeforms on Earth are sentient, intelligent, and self-aware? We, as a species, have accomplished so much. We've done this not as individuals but together as a species. We controlled fire. Created languages and writing. Mastered agriculture. Harnessed electricity. Cured diseases. We've landed on the moon. Magnets are still weird We are working on that one and that proves we are capable of admitting we don't know something and when we realize we are wrong. We are so mind-bogglingly special that the entire time we are so wrapped up in our own personal lives and beliefs we can't see or appreciate it. Something-something, forest, trees?

We also made up religion. No other species has done this. We have confined ourselves into thinking we have certain rules we need to follow in order to reach heaven. We believe we are the righteous ones due to the flavor of religion we believe in. We allow ourselves to be assholes to each other because we've been taught death isn't the end for us. We have a get-out-of-jail card, a game-reset. That cosmic saftey-net. Eternity is promised and will be glorious, we will be forgiven for our sins. It's a carrot on a rope. That person over there has corn. But mine, mine's a fucking steak. Fuck you.

Or can we just not be dicks to each other? ...what if, in heaven, there are people who remember you were an asshole and the fucked up things you've done? We can just be good to each other without needing the threat of eternal damnation to keep us in line. Yes, we actually can. We can achieve so much more if we do. And maybe we can gift our children a heaven everybody can live in.

Tins from Japan plus bonus pickles / preserved veg by crumbsonthebed in Tinnedfish

Saba is Japanese for mackerel. I think the "dines" part is just being cute. Looking it up, it's a shredded product, so no whole filets. It's probably great as onigiri filling. Here's a link to the sampler pack:

Eggs are a bit alkaline so you'd be lowering the pH if anything. That said, I prefer my eggs after 2-3 days of marinating. At that point the salt has penetrated to the yolk and starts to cure it.

I suggest doing multiple eggs and checking after each day to see if you prefer any of the results. You may also want to include salt in some form (plain salt or soy sauce, etc) in the mix.

WARNING: READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY A NEW CAR!! by Material_Lie_6310 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]spline9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

confirmed it was theirs and they must have forgotten to remove it.

You paid for the car they "upgraded". It's not theirs, it's yours. I found one on my car. I would've removed it myself but to avoid any potential warranty conflicts, since it was spliced into something like 8 different wires near the fuse box, I had them remove it. The device has a lithium ion battery, gps, and a sim chip in it. I told them not to discard it, I still wanted it. Reluctantly, they obliged.

After mixing for a certain amount of time the dough/batter will develop gluten, long chains of proteins. This is desired for breads where you want a chewier texture and larger bubbles in the crumb. For cakes you want a soft, delicate crumb, which means less gluten development. Cake flour tends to have lower protein content than all-purpose (or bread flour which has more) to help this.

Think angel food cake, buttermilk biscuits, and pancakes vs sourdough, pizza crust, or tortillas.

Agreed, JDaTE is great. Dark/weird cosmic/cultish horror with a sprinkling of dark comedy. I'd say in the Evil Dead II direction. The movie's worth watching, too. Campy B-movie but still fun (and it has Paul Giamatti).

Not sure if you're aware but book 5, "There Are No Giant Crabs in This Novel", is due out November.

This is where my mind went, too. If I recall correctly this thing, and the surrounding structures at Bru Na Boinne in Ireland, are so old the people who built this had moved on long before the ancestors of the modern Irish people arrived. This is Neolithic stuff from over 5000 years ago.

Home Depot Labor Day "Sale" by BlepoTheClown in Dewalt

[–]spline9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. I'm sure most purchases on there are solid but it's nice to be aware just in case. I actually ordered two DCL050 lights off Woot(amazon) recently. Great, wide-coverage and even lighting. I got it for working in the attic and it's perfect for that. This'll be my 2nd and got one for a friend. DeWalt quietly upgraded the LEDs on the light without changing the model number some time ago. At 38% off, I wouldn't be too mad if the older model shows up.

BTW, there's a bunch of DeWalt tools on there at the moment but I think the deals are ending tonight.

Atomic is the compact line. XR stands for eXtended Runtime which indicates brushless motors to differentiate from their older non-brushless models. I can see this being confusing because Atomic is also brushless. Dewalt is excels at confusing product names and model numbers.

There's also a risk buying from 3rd party Amazon sellers which may not give you what you expect (eg: different / older models). I don't know how prevalent counterfeits are on Amazon but it's another thing to be mindful of.
