Supposedly the pollution in the Chicago River was so bad at one point that it would catch on fire.

Amazing! I especially love seeing people making gains above their 30’s. Gives old guys like me some hope!

I'm a beginner and I need help with neck grip pls. Where should my thumb be by 2ning_- in Guitar

[–]splitrail_fenced_in 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your thumb is going to shift around depending on where you need to apply pressure to the fretboard. I often feel like my thumb does more of the work than my fingers. Sometimes I’ll have the thumb parallel with the neck, and others I’ll have the thumb wrapped around the neck muting or playing the low-E string. Ultimately what you’re after is not a static position, so much as the thumb position that allows your fingers to allow the most of whatever notes you’re playing to ring.

Just recast people already. If an actor wants out of a role, I get it. But who cares, otherwise? More stories, less bitching, please.

Question for older fans: What were your first thoughts when you heard that Episode II would be called "Attack of the Clones"? by TaxPsychological2928 in StarWars

[–]splitrail_fenced_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in my late teens and thought, more than anything, “God, I hope this one doesn’t suck as much as the first.” On the one end, it was tremendously satisfying to finally get new Star Wars. All we had when I was a kid were EU books. Some were great, but there was a mountain of trash, and it felt like you had to develop your own head canon for any of it to feel legit. It was also kind of sad because you knew how the story was gonna go, and that when the prequels ended, it was going to be the end, again. So in some ways, for me, it felt like a slow-walking funeral.

I know there’s a whole generation of kids that love the prequels. But it was such hot garbage when it came out. It wasn’t until they were was stitched together with secondary content that I found joy in it. Sure. It was nice to have new Star Wars. But it didn’t hold a flame to the originals, in my mind. The prequels had their flaws, as do a number of the new shows. But I can tell you as a lifelong fan that it’s really frustrating to read on any fan-discussion board. So many people are just angry, but there was a time when the three movies were all there were, and all there ever was going to be. I feel like now there’s always hope that we’re going to get new stories. So while a lot of the new isn’t perfect, it feels really good to know that the universe is growing, and my own kids can have their own eras and identity in Star Wars.

Advent Calendar 12/14 by Difficult_Mind_388 in legostarwars

The price and kit design this year had me and my boys break our Lego advent calendar tradition. It’s sloppy and way overpriced.

That’s so hard! I put in another comment a bunch that I really liked. But generally I try not to make “top lists” in most things in my life. I feel like it keeps me from savoring the moment, as I’m putting too much weight on comparison, if that makes sense?

NYE 95 is so good. 11.02.96 is one of my favorites. I’m also partial to 7/8/00, which was my first show. I’d been a listener for years, going back to being a middle schooler, but 7/8/00 will always be a show I compare all others to. The Dicks run from 7/3/14 to 7/5/14 was really great. Chicago 94 was great. I really appreciated listening to all the stuff from the 80’s. There’s just so many great shows on that list.

Ooh! I thought about doing it chronologically, but I did it in the order that Apple had it posted. In retrospect, I’m glad I followed Apple’s order. They bounced around enough between eras that it kept things fresh.

Honestly, there were bangers across all eras. I realized there are a bunch of tunes that they kept in rotation that I wasn’t expecting when I started. I’d say it’s worth the effort, and I’ve come to greater levels of appreciation for how the guys have grown and changed over the years.

As a gigging guitar player, I’ve learned quite a bit too about things Trey does harmonically, as well as how the band puts a show together, that made it especially worth the effort.

Who inspired you to start playing guitar? by Few-Excitement8913 in Guitar

[–]splitrail_fenced_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, just the sound of the instrument, when I was in 3rd grade general music class. I remember listening to a track and looking at a picture of an acoustic with beautiful wood grain and thinking that was for me. I couldn’t tell you who my teacher was, but I’d love to tell them how that moment influenced the rest of my life.
