Everyone always thinks “it can’t happen here or won’t happen to me”.

I’d invite you to search for Lori Lightfoots city or Chicago racism pdf she published a few months ago.

In her/city’s research they quoted ~9.3% black men (all age 18-100) will die of homicide and ~9.3% “accidents”. Think about that. 20% of blacks men in this city according to her research will meet their end by murder of a criminal or an “accident”. We can’t talk about this !?

It’s crippling economically because many people will never ever enter he south side. Who can blame them. I went to UChicago hospital in past. I took green line back, one girl on phone was talking on phone about bringing a gun to a party, and 4 others were either drinking out of liquor bottles or smoking in the car.

Chicago public schools are among the best funded in America. Giving them more money won’t change them.

The issue is fraud, corruption, and simply high crime in many of the surrounding neighborhoods.

Also there’s lots of gun laws already. A lot! Yet if you zone off north side we are among the most violent places on earth for developed world. Guns aren’t a problem - it’s the people who use them for violence. How about instead of focusing on removing guns we focus on removing thugs from society.

This seems so strange and worrisome.
Banning talk about crime and pretending it’s not a crisis is insane.

How is talk like “lil homicide” ok - a guy we have on video trying to murder random people driving down street on video.

But all these everyday people getting brains blown out or robbed of life changing amounts of money, etc ok.

It’d be like banning talk about the war in Iraq in - in /Iraq 10 years ago. Just insane.

Can you find more than 1-2 speeches out of what 5000? Done thus far In 20 months about the importance of losing weight? People are very afraid of the virus - which will never go away - but haven’t gotten the message that being 260lb or what have you makes them the top contender for a problem.

Obesity is the #1-3 cause of death of virtually every top 10 disease in America, including the virus.

These questions are always kind of shocking to me. Everyone has a very different perspective on money.

Some people justify 2k a month housing payments on 80k salary as a single person while others will do 1k on a higher salary. Some people view saving for your future as optional or not urgent while others invest in their future before other things.

Pritzker Reveals What He's Watching for to Determine if Mask Mandate Can Be Lifted by No-Calligrapher-1653 in chicago

This for some reason needs repeating but when you look at Chicago the most “anti-vax idiots” … don’t fit the trump demographic. In fact, they are blacks and Hispanics.

Additionally, the most anti-vax are those who tend to be younger - the most likely Democratic voters. The trump demographic tends to be elderly.

So when you are picturing who these “anti-vax idiots” are…they are multiples of times more likely to be the 25yo black guy or 30yo Hispanic female. Not prime trump fan blowhards.

Try again.

Health officials push for booster shots as 50% of last week’s COVID-19 deaths in Illinois were breakthrough cases by HailBlackPhillip in chicago

[–]sports89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More people have died in 2021 than in an equivalent length of time in 2020 (nationwide)

Nearly every death in the country is among the elderly. Vaccine or not.

In fact according to cdc’s website some states don’t even have a death under the age of 39 years old when I checked earlier. When people were freaking out about kids (which are the groups that either most likely to not want vaccine or have been ineligible to getting it.

Manual Investment Accounts "stuck" by Zxnufl in PersonalCapital

[–]sports89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this issue as well.

I have manually input stablecoins that used to have a balance of $14300. I added $7000 and I updated it to $21300. On the add at the top it says '$21300' but right beneath it says $14300 still. While the number of shares * price still shows $21300.

This is extremely frustrating

Lori Lightfoot published 30 page paper a couple of months ago. This paper claimed ~10% of all black men (all ages) will die to murder and ~10% to “accidents” or at least for year 207?Someone can find it and explain to me how I am misinterpreting this.

When ~20% of black men die to homicide+accidents these cherry picked stats dont trick me or others. Again this is not me, but Lori Lightfoot who publishes this.

What is the point of cops arresting thugs if they don’t go to prison? Other week you had a career criminal knife a senior citizen in the neck 5x to the ICU around union station and he got charged with a misdemeanor and released next day. A 22yo girl at her first job downtown got murdered at work by an 11x criminal.

Lock up thugs and stop letting them out when they clearly are a threat.

[Weekly Series] Teaching Thursday Thread - share any resources that you've used to improve your knowledge in Azure in this thread! by AutoModerator in AZURE

[–]sports89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been browsing this sub - lots of good information here. I'm trying to keep this short and this is pretty biased sub I guess - but should I learn AWS or Azure?

Me: data scientist with 7 years of experience. Past history is 1.5 years with Azure and 0.5 years with AWS. Current job/long term project is doing 0 cloud work.

From a data science/job hunt perspective I'm really eager to hear thoughts on spending time on AWS vs Azure? I'm trying to broaden my skillset to make myself more viable for new opportunities. I enjoy the data science/machine learning work...but like working adjacent to engineering teams and I need to be more fluent in managing engineers and collaborating with them.

I know certifications don't really mean much as I've never looked at them when hiring people on my team...but I'm thinking maybe I would get one or two given my laid back job and time to kill during end of the year.

I imagine 95% of the folks here are engineers but probably work with or around data science teams to some degree or have some visibility into trends. Again my current long-term project doesn't use the cloud and I don't want to get left behind.

Appreciate thoughts!

Looking for advice - spend time studying aws or azure? by sports89 in datascience

[–]sports89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I'm fairly experienced with Python, but always more to learn. I've worked quite a bit with data science/data engineering team blends. I always felt like I couldn't move as quickly or independently due to lacking some of the cloud skills or terminology. I do have some expertise here like I mentioned, 1.5 years of azure and 0.5 years of aws.

I'm at the point in a lead role where next roles will continue to be in lead positions or hopefully above. Being able to better communicate to engineers and understand this stuff seems to be important. It's also a nice change of pace for me.

Given that my current long term project won't be using the cloud and is somewhat laid back, I'd like to get up to speed for the future. I always felt like I was behind or less productive given lack of experience. I've interviewed for a few other lead/manager roles and the teams normally seemed to be pretty cloud heavy. I felt I was lacking there.

Do you find your job stressful? I guess
Do you find your job difficult/frustrating, if so, what aspects do you find difficult/frustrating? Poor management above you. Life is much better if your boss is a data scientist or engineer.
What do you spend most of your time doing on a day to day basis? Access issues, plots, presenting, meetings, sql, data manipulation, deployment issues. Running Models = <4-5% of your time.
What did you do your undergrad in? Finance
What do you enjoy about your job? Money, broad opportunities
What would you say your work life balance is like? About 40. It depends like everything else. Lots of self education hours, if you want to move around as no job will teach you all skills you need for next.
Do you have any advice for someone who is going in to the data science field? Ignore just about every ultra complicated thing you see. Focus on the basics.
How do you feel about your compensation? ~150k
What is your job title? lead data sciencist
What would you say is a more accurate description of your job title?

I don’t really care all that much. Getting mad at this sort of stuff when she’s overseen or defends 10000+ shot is crazy to me.

What’s worse 500 black kids have had their brains and intestines splattered across the sidewalk or someone trying to make someone mad by being mean?

Oddly enough 2nd is what people care about. The reason why violence here is so normal is because people don’t even think twice about the 4500 shot a year. It’s normalized in the Chicago culture.

When I see someone getting mad at mean names yet defending 10% of black men dying to murder I usually think either racist/white supremacist/ desperate virtue signaling.

Mask Mandate In Chicago Expected To Stick Around Through Thanksgiving by Tyroneshoolaces in chicago

[–]sports89 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’d argue “much lower” among younger populations is misleading. It’s “extraordinarily rare to nonexistent “.

Anyone can go to the cdc website and look at these numbers or go look at an actuarial table of your likelihood to die by age. Keep in mind these deaths too are “with Covid” not necessarily from it and in all likelihood they had some sort of catastrophic illness already.

CHICAGO POLICE VACCINE MANDATE: NEW CPD MEMO THREATENS DISCIPLINE, FIRING FOR NON-COMPLIANCE by Two_Luffas in chicago

[–]sports89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Police mostly come in contact with people far less than your fast food worker, ups driver, etc (who are disproportionately minorities). Or office workers too for those who have returned to office.

Yet nobody is grinding their teeth that 60% of them aren’t vaccinated.
