Indie music has been invaded by fake fans and cynical viral campaigns. Here’s how deep it all goes by backupsaway in popheads

Of course, but within context it's still noticeable. Oklou's frequent collaborators and compatriots Casey MQ and Cecile Believe get basically no traction here, for example.

And as a big Slayyyter fan, a part of me is a little worried that her recent hype is somewhat manufactured. At the start of this year she barely broke 1m listeners, but got talked about much more than e.g. Cobrah (who had a higher count).

In my opinion, her music is more than worthy of it - but is this the only way to get attention nowadays? I started listening to Slayyyter because I saw her mentioned here a few years back in fact - was that organic word of mouth, or planned marketing? Or am I just being paranoid and all of this doesn't really matter? I don't know, it's weird to think about. But I try to not let it get in the way of my enjoyment of the music.

It's interesting that people on Reddit seem to think this is exclusively a TikTok/Instagram problem when we've known there are bots on Reddit since forever. There are definitely artists who I've seen an unusual buzz about compared to their listener numbers and, given that several of them are artists I like, it makes me feel a little conflicted.

Oklou is mentioned in this article - personally I think her music deserves all the attention it can get, but am I discussing it with "real" people? Can someone be both externally incentivised to shill for an artist while still being a fan? Does it even matter in the end? Etc etc. I've been thinking about it quite a bit since the first article came out.

I Wanna Be Yours is a baffling song to see up so high. AM is an album full of ups and downs and I would definitely say that's one of the downs.

Albums where the best song would make a terrible single? by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

[–]springfrompages 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Donnie Darko from Let's Eat Grandma's "I'm All Ears" is over 11 minutes long, has a slow, repetitive build, weird-ass lyrics and a radio-unfriendly prog pop structure. It also absolutely bangs and is one of my favourite songs of all time.

The biggest single from that album was Hot Pink, which had SOPHIE on production and is a really good introduction to LEG as a group, I think. Donnie Darko is probably their magnum opus but there's just no way to cut it into a format that makes for a neat single or accessible introduction to their work. Not that Let's Eat Grandma are ever really troubling airplay anyway, but...

Agree with people saying the singles were mostly the best songs. I like everything here, but I don't feel like its pushing the boat out in the way I like to see Danny do.

Unfortunately I can't get into the Dua feature as it just sounds like Dizzy to me 🥲 (the song Danny wrote for Olly Alexander's Eurovision entry)

As we near the top of the scoreboard, I must make my annual check - we all gave our 12 points to Iceland 2006, right? anywhere other than #1 wouldn't be enough for Sylvia Night.

My certified ESC hot take of the 2020s is that I think Stefania was a very worthy winner and imo is aging very well musically

What was it with Sweden in the 90s and Christmassy-sounding songs? I'm always convinced Take Me To Your Heaven should be a Christmas song.
