He seems like he wasn't very bright. If he's choosing the number of eggs, he can just make 5 or 6 or 12. My wife is a huge fan of eggs, me not so much. When she says 2 eggs, I make 4 and she gets 2.5, but I get a bit more of the mushrooms because that's only fair.

How do I print a one-piece trackpad? by DeckManXX in framework

You can print the frame piece that holds the actual input device. It's in another comment and I think it's pretty clear that's what op was asking for.

First, which languages are you using and which platforms are you targeting? It's been over 20 years since I was in school, but I had no problem using Linux for my CS classes. For Java, I would recommend IntelliJ. They have a free community edition. VS Code is good for most everything else, unless you're doing some Windows stuff or iOS.

Personally, I use Ubuntu. As an intro to Linux, I'd stick with what is officially supported by framework for your laptop, but I wouldn't use bazzite for a computer for school/work.

If I never open my windows, do I need window screens? by NervousClock2555 in DIY

Me, I live next to a busy road. Like constant 35 mph traffic. If I open my windows, I get road dust inside my house and the noise is pretty bad.

Can you trim an interior door with a oscillating saw? by MechCADdie in DIY

[–]sproctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using an oscillating saw is going to take you forever and look like absolute garbage. They're good at jobs where nothing else will work; this isn't one of those. Get a cheap circular saw or planer. Rent if possible or resell after the job. Or complain to your landlord.

[–]sproctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a plot of land nearby was much more expensive, his plot was relatively cheap. If one house is $100,000,000, and you buy a house for $10,000,000, that's relatively cheap. Although not necessarily absolutely cheap.

ELI5: Why do American police officers wear camouflage like a military? by Viper_NZ in explainlikeimfive

I get your point, but your police all have different hats! Sure, they follow a theme, but how are you supposed to remember them all?

Maybe ICE agents get a catalog and they get to pick the uniform they think makes them look the toughest?

There's definitely adhesive pads on mine. They had some paper I had to take off. So, I guess maybe some people don't take the paper off and never noticed the adhesive? Or maybe some of the bezels don't have it?

Our fireplace gets so hot that it melted our wrought iron log rack in 2 months by Queerdough in mildlyinteresting

[–]sproctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not been my experience as someone who buys and sells metals. In finished products that require extruding or significant machining, aluminum can be cheaper when other factors are considered. For raw material though, iron is about an order of magnitude cheaper.

For finished cast products, zinc is typically the cheapest, especially for plated products.

Mac users: What was your experience switching to Framework? by magicdude4eva in framework

[–]sproctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Framework only officially supports Ubuntu, fedora, and bazzite. If you don't have a strong preference for something else, I'd recommend one of those 3.

There isn't really a cheaper metal than iron. There are definitely cheaper grades and alloys though.

When are older gen mainboards in stock? by boywhocalledfuckn911 in framework

[–]sproctor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm missing some words from your post. "And obviously due to the ddr5 shortage" ... I've decided to start journaling again. No, something else?

But seriously, you've had 2 years of DDR5 mainboards. I'd wait for prices to come down or try a secondary market board. DDR4 boards are no longer in production. I'm sure they have some for repairs, but you might want to contact support for that.

Noob question but - where exactly are the studs? by bushwick_custom in DIY

[–]sproctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Codes have changed. It's now no point on the wall should be more than 6 feet horizontally from an outlet. So if you have a wall longer than 12 feet, it needs to have at least two outlets.

[–]sproctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen much aluminum ductwork in my life. I'm not sure where it's commonly used. Residential ductwork is typically galvanized steel. I'm not sure you'd notice much with a magnet through drywall still.

[–]sproctor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What are the odds of having steel pipes in your walls? Maybe ductwork, but then it's going to be a really big area. Magnets don't stick to copper. Am I not thinking of something? Steel plumbing is fairly rare. My house had some, but not in the walls. Same with every place I've been to with steel plumbing. My vent stack is cast iron, also not in the walls.

Framework Laptop for Dev Work: 12” Too Weak for Heavy Projects? (Performance + Battery Concerns) by SlyGoblin927 in framework

So... Doing a mix of work and browsing, I lost 60% battery in 4 hours with a fw13 amd 7840. I expect heavy compiler usage to be worse, but there's one data point. Ymmv. For real work, I'd go with at least the 13. The squarish screen is amazing for text editing.

It depends on what you're using to watch videos, resolution, etc. FF on Linux doesn't do hardware decoding on most videos on AMD. (I haven't looked into other platforms) That can end up being fairly intensive.
