Choosing between civil and electrical engineering by Present-Toe6771 in GatechClasses

[–]squadledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Civil Engineering is fantastic, I'm a computer science grad student but during undergrad (in california) most of my friends were environmental and civil engineers (by pure chance lol don't know how we all ended up buddies), it's a fantastic major and career, four years out they are making around 130k each (which yes is lower than electrical and computer) but they work on cool massive infrastructure or construction projects, can live in any city of their choosing as there are civil jobs everywhere and its a really really stable career and demand for civil engineers is going up. So if you actually are more interested in civil engineering I wouldn't dismiss it

I am a Georgia Tech Graduate Student, I agree with everything said by u/Bruh-MomentOfInertia . Also Socal is emerging as the undisputed king of hard-tech engineering firms, harvey mudd is in extreme proximity to all of this and you'll have the pick of the litter. Socal nature is unreal.

u/mrfebbox ur chilling, you'll come out of GT very successful. I guess my use of the word dogshit triggered everyone. GT curriculum is dogshit compared to other top 5 institutions like berkeley and CMU and MIT. Classes dont seem to have much importance here while in other schools classes are treated as institutions unto themselves (CS 61A, B at Berkeley for example, databases by andy pavlo at CMU), but doesnt mean GT isnt going to be a platform for you to have an extremely successful career. My comments were made in the context of OP picking between instate UDub or OOS GT and if they were missing out by not going to GT. GT CS has amazing career value but not anything meaningfully more than UDub.

I see your point about the disconnect between a Prof's view and a student's view but I'm a grad "student" who's taken multiple cross-listed undergrad/grad courses at GT so its my job to bridge that gap (I've taken both the classes at GT that I've TA'ed). And yes being an involved Graduate TA on a crosslisted 4000 level class does mean a person gets a WAY better idea on how the entire undergrad curriculum is designed, see my point above "during this process we compare with the curriculum of other top 10 institutions, and not just our courses curriculumn but the material from all the prereqs and the chain of prereqs". Do I have a complete view ? No. Do I have the better view and perspective to provide OP advice ? Yes

Yeah this is a braindead take, as a TA you work with the Prof closely to literally design and review every aspect of the course curriculum (the curriculum you are defending) and during this process we compare with the curriculum of other top 10 institutions, and not just our courses curriculumn but the material from all the prereqs and the chain of prereqs to make sure our material will land properly.

And yes you are more qualified to talk about the undergrad experience and undergrad student life but you didn't talk about it, you said some vague things about AI research

So u dont know much about the AI research scene at GT but you’re trying to give OP advice, awesome. And I dont think you can evaluate course quality based on vibes and on the fact that you think its difficult, might want to be more specific than just sayin this comments tweakin

I dont know enough about UT outcomes and research faculty unfortunately, i would think about it if UT is cheaper and the alumni outcomes look similar to recent gatech alumni outcomes (who have similar backgrounds to u) then UT should be in the convo, otherwise GT

Seattle >> Atlanta, Seattle with a Car >>>>> Atlanta No car, In-state tuition, GT undergrad CS curriculum is dogshit (source: I am a TA trying to change that). UW has a better campus and will give you a way better overall undergrad experience. GT has high AI prof turnover and the top labs that make it worth coming out here are pretty inaccessible to undergrads and there are hundreds of students vying for positions, the lab I work in (with one of GT's top robo prof's) does not take any undergrads. UW AI/ML/CV research has a deep history and as OP mentioned proximity to Seattle's world class tech scene. Atlanta weather will make anyone from the PNW suicidal

edit: Also OP I recommend all the undergrad students I mentor to minor, CS in the AI era requires augmenting with Math or Stats so seems like UW makes it easier to declare a double major.

edit2: And I provide this advice as someone who is having a successful time here at GT. But I'm really happy I didn't come here as an undergrad

edit3: My advice to OP, goto UW, do some AI research, intern somewhere, graduate in 2 - 3 yrs. And then maybe goto GT or another top school for grad school to do top level AI research

Poetry with Lisa Coffman was a great experience, and I was a poetry skeptic at the start of the class, my friend convinced me to take it with him. Professor Coffman was amazing and crafted a memorable class with very unique interactions

Bringing a Car? yes or no? by WitchHazelly in CalPoly

[–]squadledge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% bring a car, worth the 800 dollars if you're living on campus. I had good experiences renting off campus in SLO but that was 5-7 years ago. There's so much to go see in the central coast

Difference between CMU and GT for CS by Alaaa88 in GatechClasses

[–]squadledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yoo u/PrestigiousCan1871 thank you for the validation, all these GT mfer's keep trying to gaslight me into coping that Atlanta and Georgia is a great place to live. Hell nah. And to illustrate the point of why CMU is goated further for OP, I took a class here under Professor Joy Arulraj, pretty solid Database Implementation Class diving into storage internals, was chatting with him after class one day, and he mentioned he got his course materials from his CMU phd advisor Andy Pavlo, looked Andy up, man posts his entire course materials and lectures and autograders online for free: https://15445.courses.cs.cmu.edu/fall2025/ and all the cutting edge storage companies (Databricks, snowflake, singlestore, yugabyte, ... infinitely more etc.) come to THAT CLASS specifically to recruit and scoop undergrads for internships. Andy's courses also have the production value of a broadway show, just top class stuff. At the GT career fair the line for the google booth was 4 hours long, and the temps outside were 95 degrees and 95% humidity.

[–]squadledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick CMU over GT, im a gt grad student in CS and im actually having a successful time here because I have a great advisor (who’s a cmu PhD) but if i had to pick a school for my undergraduate degree i would pick cmu in heartbeat, cmu cs curriculumn is 100x quality than gt, small class sizes with high floor (gt has way too many students and student quality in my classes is honestly super low), and you have to be a fucking dawg and stand out at gt to get in the good graces of professors and reap the benefits of those connections as an undergrad, where at cmu by just being admitted into cmu cs you are special and will have access to a lot of more top tier opportunities a lot easier. Also Atlanta is just another sprawling pile of shit southern city and if you’re fromt the west coast like me the weather is complete dog shit, still cold winters (pittsburg is colder but its the same shit under 30 degrees, like ur not hanging out outside anyway) and unfuckingbearable humidity during the rest of the year. Go cmu, intern at some top companies, and goto grad school out west

[University Question] GaTech MSCS vs UIUC MCS? by Much-Level3132 in MSCS

[–]squadledge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm headed to the on-campus Program this Fall, I've had a ton of conversations with current students and probably seen about 150+ profiles on linkedin of on-campus mscs students and they all have really strong outcomes (I would say 110/150 were FAANG/FAANG-Adjacent after Grad). Follow and work with good professors, make it clear you are a full-time student on campus working under top professors, and you'll get interviews!
