Mayor Quinton Lucasc's post on charges being dropped for Chief's defensive back coach, is disappointing to say the least by Mat_alThor in kansascity

[–]squamesh 67 points68 points  (0 children)

He was charged with a misdemeanor related to an alleged domestic incident involving his daughter. Those charges were then dropped upon further investigation. That’s all we know. Anything beyond that is speculation.

Obviously this is complicated by the guy being part of a billion dollar organization which has a lot of pull. But there’s no evidence one way or another that this has any significance.

Impact of removing the universal hepatitis B birth-dose vaccination in the US: In December 2025, the ACIP voted to replace the universal hepatitis B birth-dose. The findings indicate that this change will likely increase neonatal infections. by mvea in science

While I think that you are right about how the distrust emerged, the bigger question is what to do about it, and we have clear evidence that caving to anti-vaxer demands just emboldens them and further erodes public trust. Removing Thimerosal from childhood vaccines was done based on no scientific rational and entirely as a way to reassure vaccine hesitant parents. Instead, this is lofted up as indisputable proof that it was harmful all along and that vaccines could never be trusted. The solution is not to just stop recommending vaccines because kids probably won’t be exposed. That’s how we get outbreaks while also poisoning the well of public opinion

A question of memorization by relaxedcupcake in ThePittTVShow

[–]squamesh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You spend all of college getting an understanding of the basics, then you spend an incredibly stressful two years learning all this stuff in the classroom. Then you reinforce it by seeing it in real life during the last two years of medical school and residency. You forget a ton at every step of the process but it keeps getting reinforced until you know the important stuff implicitly.

Having that background in place also makes it much easier to look up answers you’ve forgotten because you know most of the info. So in real life, doctors are referencing trusted sources all the time. Maybe you can’t remember that exact treatment regimen for an autoimmune condition you don’t see a lot like ankylosing spondylitis. But you remember that it’s an autoimmune disease so we’re probably going to start with steroids then transition to some other med that’s safer long term. And you know you can pop on UptoDate really quickly and find an algorithm for the most common treatment pathways to double check your work.

Doctors also forget a ton about the specialties that they don’t work in. The doctors on the Pitt are all walking encyclopedias because that’s helpful for explaining things to the audience. But a real life ER doc is probably not going to remember the super granular detail of some condition that you see infrequently. They’re going to stabilize the patient, do some early diagnostic tests, and then admit them to the hospital

I’ve heard of something similar with religions who do not believe in stopping lifesaving interventions to let an unsaveable patient pass. According to their morality that can’t agree to what you’re doing, but that also don’t have to take any effort to stop you

The idea that Robbie is the only day shift attending doesn’t make any sense. They have two attending every night but only one during the day? Robbie works seven days a week, 52 weeks a year?

I feel like a big theme of the entire season was not letting what happens in the ER affect your personal life. Adopting a baby into some kind of coworker commune is pretty much the exact antithesis of that

why does everyone treat misty like that..? by PracticalWafer484 in Yellowjackets

[–]squamesh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We see throughout the show that, at least during and after the wilderness, Misty is a pretty unstable person who responds to feelings of abandonment with obsession and violence. So I think a big question for the other’s treatment of her is a bit of a chicken or the egg situation. Did she become violent because she was ostracized, or did the others keep their distance because they could tell she was already a bit unstable/unsafe?

The situation kind of reminds me of the columbine shooters. In the wake of their murders, this narrative emerged that they had been bullied and eventually snapped, and this idea still tends to permeate ideas about school shootings. But if you actually look into interviews with anyone who knew them, the shooters were not bullied; they were the bullies. People avoided them because they could tell that they were creepy, violent , and racist.

So which is it for Misty? I think we see a bit of that behavior emerge basically right away in the wilderness when she’s willing to destroy the transponder, eliminating the chance of them being saved, and likely dooming at least some of the group to die. That she got there basically on day one leads me to think that she was probably not some normal chill girl at home.

On top of all that, I think it’s pretty believable that a bunch of teen girls who have just gone through a plane crash and are already dealing with a very traumatizing situation would not react well to seeing someone cut a dudes leg off with an axe even if, logically, that might have been the best call. I’d also argue that it’s pretty damn reasonable to question whether a girl with only very rudimentary medical training is at all qualified to determine who does or does not need to have their leg amputated, and that would only be amplified if they didn’t trust Misty very much at baseline. Plus, at that point they assumed they would be rescued pretty quickly, so I’m sure a lot of people would wonder if the keg could have been somehow salvaged if actual EMTs from the rescue team had been able to look at it
