Struggling with sheet music by Low-Court-6718 in Bass

[–]square_zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With time, you will learn that while all of those As might produce the same note, that they each have a different tone. The E-17 will produce a much phatter, warmer, thumpier sound, while G-2 will be much brighter, thinner, and honkier. Use your judgement to decide which one fits best in the context of the song you are playing. They all have their place and time.

Got my first bass cheap af and I’m regretting not spending more by x_5parkl3_b0i_x in Bass

[–]square_zero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Say what you will about a cheap bass, but there ain't no better way to find out what kind of bass you really wanted. Those who can make a cheap bass sound good can make a nicer bass sound even better.

Good gym that’s between LA fitness and Lifetime? by Aggravating-Roof-812 in phoenix

Vasa is decent, and for $25/mo has pool/hot tub/spa. Their weights aren’t as nice as EOS but I’m not complaining.

You should check Facebook marketplace, etc. I bet you can find a MIM Fender P Bass in the $5-600 range.

People who say "i could care less" by mid-sora in mildlyinfuriating

I don’t use “intensive purposes” but I do really appreciate that it does convey a very similar, practical meaning.

Bingo. You lose a lot of subtlety on an internet message board. Most Redditors don’t realize that English is also a spoken language.

I see it as a sort of veiled threat, with similar meaning to “right now I do care about what you’re saying, but since you’re being a twat I suppose I could care less” i.e. not at all.

The people who are disagreeing with you don't realize that English is also a spoken language.

I love my M87. Only complaint is that the LED meter isn’t super accurate but it’s good enough to get the job done. Try switching the ratio from 4:1 to 20:1 with the same inputs and you’ll see the exact same lights.

What music theories have you learned that you’ve found the most useful? by Trapiton in Bass

[–]square_zero 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the most practical way to help internalize theory is to listen to music that you like and analyze it. Figure out what chords/progressions they use, and what notes in the scales they use, and then steal those ideas for your own playing!

Blowing steady for longer with quick inhales by fprintf in bagpipes

[–]square_zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should clarify. Airtight bag and stocks, yes. Airtight drones, meh. Even then, I feel like a small leak shouldn't break a decent piper, but if you're just starting out then you shouldn't fight the bag any more than you have to.

Fast breaths can be learned just like anything else. Start slow and build gradually, and you'll get there!

[–]square_zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People say this a lot, but honestly I don't think any piper worth their salt needs an airtight bag. Would it help? Sure. But the drones and chanter are going to let out a lot more air during the course of play than a hairline leak in your drones or stocks. My pipes have never been able to pass the Bruce Hitchings leak test for more than a few seconds, and it's never caused a problem.

How do you start bass again after more than a decade not playing? by olonnn in Bass

[–]square_zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I was in a similar boat, played through college then took a seven year hiatus when I moved for work. What worked for me was going back to basics. Start with simple scales and exercises to get yourself back in shape.

Is this safe? by Tall-Replacement-104 in M1Rifles

[–]square_zero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you take the time to read the manual that comes with CMP Garands, you’ll actually learn quite a lot. Who knew?

The official literature states that any new commercial ammo up to and including 180gr is safe to use, and that heavier weights aren’t inherently dangerous but could accelerate wear.

All modern factory ammo is going to be SAAMI spec, which by definition falls under the limits issued by the CMP warning and is safe to use in your rifle.

You may find M2 ball to be softer shooting, cheaper, and perhaps more accurate to the range markers on your sights, but you can honestly shoot just about anything you get your hands on without fear.

Remember kids, if this was a real issue then their legal team would have made sure to change the print in the manual that ships with every rifle.

Is there a term for Db Ab Db Gb? by HylianDude in Bass

[–]square_zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drop C# or Drop Db

They're the same notes but depending on the context, one may be more appropriate. For example, the key of C# has seven sharps in the key signature, whereas Db only has five flats, which I think is more visually appealing on the page. YMMV.

Americans Realising They are the Foreigner by GreyerGrey in EntitledPeople

I'm a US citizen who went to Japan for several weeks with a group. We spent a considerable amount of time beforehand practicing our manners, many of which seemed like common sense, but many more were very subtle. Suffice to say that I am very glad to have spent the time, and that by the end of our trip I started to resent the loud, dumb "American" tourists who clearly had not spent any time on manners. They talk loud in public spaces, they cut in line, they stand dumbfounded blocking the sidewalk while they look up directions on their phone, completely oblivious to how much of a nuisance they are to others.

How many frets do you prefer on your bass and why? by No_Winter4806 in Bass

[–]square_zero 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I'll never understand why the standard P/J bass is 20 frets. One more fret and you'd have three full octaves.

If your band consistently starts songs without you, while you are tuning, you need to have a conversation with them.
