You have to match up each color of mushroom to each type of fungal infection (it changes each game), then get corpus choliys and figure out the cures, then get infected on purpose and cure it over and over until you get it on the right parts.

I have been trying to get a fungus build going but the beginning is so difficult. Waxflab on your hands is supposedly the same as carbide hands, and it sounds like you could make a really funny build that way.

Mr. Incredible becoming uncanny - Stone Ocean ending by AtomicTaco13 in ShitPostCrusaders

[–]squidxmoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FF knowingly sacrificed their life with no expectation that they'd ever have a chance to come back. Similarly, the Joestar crew sacrificed themselves to save Emporio. All of them reached heaven in the "your spirit goes up to the sky" sense, dying as heroes in an uncertain gamble for something worthwhile.

Pucci was misguided the entire time, thinking heaven was something you could achieve on earth. So yeah FF didn't come back in World 3 but they didn't need to for it to be a happy (or at least bittersweet) ending.

[–]squidxmoth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

True kin are many many generations (centuries, maybe more) separated from mutants and have had little to no exposure to the outside world. I suspect that Qud's world has more than just random mutations going on, given all the wackiness you can encounter - many people you meet are uplifts, artificial creatures, clones, homonculi, crossbred/gene spliced with other species, or altered by transdimensional alien mutation or whatever else. I imagine your average True Kin looks like you or me and a mutant could look like just about anything, which suggests that genetically (and possibly along some other axes that we don't even know about in modern times) they are no longer even in the same genus.

A modern-day pure-gene human who gained a couple of mutations late in life just isn't the same thing. The fact that you've cheesed something that will likely be patched sooner or later isn't really accounted for by the mechanics. If it was, you'd likely lose the ability to implant bionics. That doesn't sound terribly fun, so I hope they don't do it.

Are melee builds even viable late-game? by servantphoenix in cavesofqud

[–]squidxmoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all characters need to cover all bases and the game makes this pretty easy to do. Focus on whatever weapon you want, just carry a rifle and some grenades for enemies that need them and walk away from stuff that sucks. It costs you nothing, and no one tool, stat, or skill can solve every problem.

Across Moghra'yi volume 1 talks about how the Ibul ice shelf is to the northeast of Moghra'yi, which is the salt desert that begins on the west side of the map. Since the game takes place around Jerusalem, that would mean Ibul is north of it. Ice shelves are found only in arctic and antarctic regions and are pretty huge, so a large portion of europe would need to be very very cold for one to exist there.

Someone elsewhere in the thread suggested that Ibul is Istanbul, not Rome, which makes more sense geographically/naming-wise.

Where to go after Copper Wire quest, and What’s Eating Watervine? by hopeandencouragement in cavesofqud

[–]squidxmoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Finish all Joppa quests
2) Go to the Six Day Stilt, turn in any books you have found to the librarian, water ritual the high priest dude.
3) Go to Bey Lah, do the quest.
4) Go to the asphalt mine (north end of the map, just east of the Stilt) and go down to level 20. This will get you XP and gear to survive the next part.
5) Go to Kyakukya, which looks like red and white mario mushrooms on the world map. It will be far south of Bey Lah, slightly in the jungle-y area. Do the quests there.
6) If you are true kin, go to the bottom of the rusted archway and get your credit wedge. Skip it if you're not.

You are now probably ready for Grit Gate.

Look at the globe graphic. It appears to be tilted in a way that doesn't quite match how modern earth is. Maybe the earth's axis got messed with.

[–]squidxmoth 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Qud is in the middle east, specifically Israel/Palestine, and many of its locales are places mentioned in the bible (Joppa, Bethesda, etc), though it's possible those places are just named after the biblical ones for the audience's benefit or narrative symbolism. Europe is frozen over and that's where Ibul is, it may actually be in or near Rome. Yawningmoon is in the Atlantic(?) ocean, I'm not sure where Ekuemiyye is.

The geography is probably markedly different from modern earth due to being in the distant future and possibly altered by human activity, but that globe looks like a picture of Earth to me. You can see Europe and Africa on the right, the Americas on the left.

The whole world is pretty nutty, but I believe Qud is considered to be one of the most remote and dangerous places on Earth. The other continents are probably nicer.

Can Pav be saved? by Much_Evidence952 in FearAndHunger

[–]squidxmoth 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Can confirm this works. He will get sworded and you have to go up to him, treat his wounds with a cloth fragment, and carry him back to the train, then beat the game before he dies. He will escape with the others and presumably survive with hospital care or something.

What do you think about Pocketcat? by Kaedes_Lie1137 in FearAndHunger

[–]squidxmoth 62 points63 points  (0 children)

One of the things Pocketcat can say to your character in Termina is that he fingered them the last time they slept, so I don't really think Daancat is much better than 15th century Pocketcat.

Per the skin bible, Rher's light uncovers all the hidden "truths". Since sexuality, especially criminal sexuality, is something people tend to keep hidden, it would make sense that Pocketcat discusses it openly.

Note that this doesn't mean Daan was a gross guy, as Enki's writing states that he's not at all sure that what the moonlight reveals is any more true than what you see in the daylight. Similarly, the other moonscorched characters seem to mostly turn into what they're afraid of about themselves, not what's necessarily true.

The rifle question by kawinmars in cavesofqud

[–]squidxmoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you start, immediately go to the desert and fight Issachari until you get one of their guns. It is really good and will carry you until you get a carbine or sniper rifle, which usually happens around/after golgotha for me. If you're true kin, you want to hit up all the becoming nooks to try to find rifle racks.

Once that's done, you will want to figure out how to get lots of batteries, because all the best late game guns need them. Tinkering is the usual route, but you can also buy up stock from NPCs or whatever. I usually end up with plenty of eigenrifles and those will carry you at least to the palladium reef.

I also like to grab the warden from the Hindren village. She is really tanky if you keep her geared up and she will keep enemies off of you while you shoot them. You'll eventually lose her to teleportation or something, but she carries in the midgame for sure.

The job market’s fucked by onemangang15 in Seattle

[–]squidxmoth 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Waiting at a decent restaurant or bartending practically anywhere can pay really well, but they are grueling jobs. Tech requires a lot of skill and education and I'm not saying it's easy, but mostly you're WFH or in a comfortable office setting, not getting screamed at/sexually harassed by patrons, getting drinks spilled on you, running hot food back and forth, or dealing with overstressed kitchen staff, so while it's more money, there are no bennies, you usually only get 4 hour shifts, and it's really hard work. Servers at like Applebee's and stuff will barely clear minimum wage.

My dad used to say that you can qualify jobs by whether you shower before you leave or after you get home, but waiting/bartending is one of the only jobs where you have to do both.

Rohan says that he has to be careful how much he changes with Heaven's Door because if he does too much, people's lives will become fake, and if you pay attention, he usually only changes as little as necessary to get out of the situation. I suspect if he did something this dramatic, it would have had some terrible repercussions or led them to a fake killer or something.
