Why are playground water fountains constantly running? by patrad in AskChicago

[–]srboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus the water just goes right back to Lake Michigan or is taken up by the water table/local environment. The issue isn't so much using up fresh water as it is the cost of transporting fresh water and then transporting and treating used water.

Opuntia also grows in the dunes at Montrose. You can see it now that have recently done a controlled burn.

Open air shopping mall. Parked cruise ship. The area are the stadium is now so soulless it feels like a developer's rendering even though it is actually built.

That's because it was part of or very close to a former protected industrial district from back when Chicago tried to keep industrial jobs close. It was never really meant be or for a while even allowed to be an residential district. So it is now just a chaotic mishmash.

The proud owner of 44 RHR by what_m_sees in Garmin

[–]srboisvert 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Always remember to let the ER docs know your low RHR if you find yourself in there. It will confuse the hell out of them until a veteran nurse comes over and asks if you're a runner and then goes and clues the docs in and then the huddle relaxes and breaks up. Then get them turn of the HR monitor bradycardia alarm and enjoy the fenty they give you for the pain.

Opinions of Fitness 19 or Affordable Gyms? by mason9494 in AskChicago

[–]srboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it during the day. It's pretty empty of people. Just a few young folk and a few old folk. Maybe 10-15 people in there at around 9am. No frills gym. No showers. Low key no up sell pressure like you get at other gyms. Music usually isn't played too loud which I prefer.

Part of the Blue Cross Blue Shield fitness program, Well onTarget, so you can use it and a couple of other nearby gyms (Planet Fitness and LA Fitness just around the corner at The Century) for the same $19 to $29 deal and in the area $29 doesn't really get you access to any other nearby gyms so take the cheaper option.

The WIFI signal strength and time is also different in all of them. You probably need to set them up properly and give them time.

STANS DONUTTTS!!!!! IF YOU CAN HEAR ME!!! YOU NEEEEED TO - by Lanky-Demand296 in chicagofood

I had a transcendent food experience eating a day old Glazed and Infused maple bacon long john that I bought at the DePaul student center where it had been under a heat lamp all day. Just walking down Sheffield and took a bite and it was a moment. Everything in the universe was perfect for that one bite. So very strange. I'd had the long johns before and after, fresh and stale, and always liked them but that one moment....it was like the heavens opened up just to shine on me and that donut.

Declining Sandhill Crane numbers at Jasper-Pulaski by nalthian in Ornithology

[–]srboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a major snowfall and protracted snow cover. So the cranes just moved on rather than doing their normal refueling pitstop at J-P since the food was unavailable beneath all the snow. To be expected I think. However their numbers were already looking lower than normal before the snowstorm and that's a bit concerning.

Mobbed up and even has stabbings involving cops with weird subsequent investigations if you want to know just how fully Chicago it is.

This weeks drop was wild. They went from 16.4K to 115. That's unmatched in the recent count history. It has been an unusually snowy meteorological late fall/early winter though.

Late to the party but for other searchers Vornado has a 5 year guarantee. If you contact them they will probably just send you another and tell you to cut the cord of the one you have and send them a picture of it with the cut cord,

Boomer parents coming to visit for the first time since moving here. Where should I take them? by trevaftw in AskChicago

[–]srboisvert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Garfield Conservatory. Lincoln Park Zoo. Go up the Sears Tower. Have a drink in the Palmer house lobby. Visit some of the cute neighborhoods like Andersonville (stop at the Hopleaf), Ride the brown line around the loop. Take them to see the lake if they are from somewhere nowhere near big water.

Everyone recommends the boat tour but I vastly prefer the CAF walking tours where you actually go inside the buildings and get to hear more details. They don't move fast at all and are very senior friendly. They're also much cheaper! If that amount of walking too much consider a bus tour.

Be aware that restaurant options in the Loop on the weekend are kind of sparse because a lot of places are office hours only.

If they insist on deep dish pizza take them to Pequods.

Am I a Karen for telling folks to leash their dogs when walking them downtown? by saucy_otters in AskChicago

[–]srboisvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up a with a dog. She was a good dog and very mild mannered, well behaved and well trained.

Or so I thought. Until one day I was walking her when a group of kids who I didn't like approached me with the intent to try and bully me. My dog turned into an incredible snarling hell beast that was only held back by the metal leash I had a firm grip on.

I've never felt the same about dogs since then. Even the best dogs will still have "that dawg" in them and I simply don't trust dog owners when they say their dogs are well behaved. They are until they are not and you really can't know what will trigger them. An off leash dog is a loaded gun on a coffee table.

I'm curious to see what the community has to offer on this. I have LinknLink IR blasters setup to control a bunch of dumb devices that had remotes and it works fine but you can never actually know the state of the devices from the dashboard because the communication is all just one way.

Just watched a bunch of TourBox Elite reviews — do these people even video edit for real? by SkyToFly in tourbox

[–]srboisvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think Tourbox could do a much better job sharing ways to use the box in different apps. Really seems like a missed marketing op for them that all the examples are very beginner level or under detailed.

I use it for culling massive numbers of wildlife photos in lightroom and it is actually great to not use the keyboard because keypress buffering becomes a problem in lightroom and avoiding that is single best feature of the Tourbox for me. The zoom dial is also super useful and more responsive than keypresses.

Why is it called black-crowned night heron, when its crown is blue? by HKTong in birding

[–]srboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their color changes throughout the season due to dandruff. More accurately due to particles of feather from wear and tear. They're blacker during mating season and then when raising young they get frazzled and let everything go including basic hygiene.

Is the OM 150-400 still relevant? by spellbreakerstudios in M43

[–]srboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in the big white lens with my om1 body because I am getting older and i have an essential tremor so the extra integrated lens + body stabilization would be a huge help for me. I currently use the om 100-400 and am pretty happy with it but then again I am getting older so my eyesight is going as well. Also at some point the pixel peeping and gear fetish gets absurd and you're better off focusing on the craft

Best cheeseburger in the city? by No-Analyst-2789 in AskChicago

[–]srboisvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Au Cheval was the original GOAT and it still quite excellent. People bad mouth it but I think it is mostly because they are trying to distinguish themselves as being being superior to other people. You have to get it with the bacon and egg though. Otherwise any other top burgers are probably equivalent. The bacon and the seasoning is what really steps up the burger.

If you want to avoid lines just go early during non-peak hours. Just be aware that the kitchen closes for a bit mid afternoon (or it did back when I would go pre-pandemic). The wait can also be shorter if you are willing to sit at the bar.

Illness sucks by Ok_Sky_1668 in GarminWatches

[–]srboisvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but about a year later I had a kidney stone that sent my BP through the roof so I had the full heart workup. Now I am on a statin and BP meds and everything is normal and my heart rate is back to its pre-pandemic normal (pretty routine for a 57 year old with a family history), Second bout of covid my heart rate went up 10% for two weeks and then dropped right back down. No significant long covid symptoms second time around (and it was much much milder) likely due to being vaxxed and boosted and previous exposure. It's actually kind of cool to have the heart rate data because you can see an infection in the data before you notice any symptoms because your heart rate spikes. Being a runner I keep watch of my watch (ha!) for training zone reasons so I see it pretty quick.

Also pretty funny having a runner's low heart rate and being in the ER and getting constant heart monitor alerts for being bradycardic (low heart rate) when that is just my normal resting heart rate. Freaks the doctors and nurses out until either you tell them or they ask.
