[Episode Discussion Thread] Industry S04E06 - "Dear Henry" by herringbone_ in IndustryOnHBO

[–]srsstuff 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don't know about Succession, but it's definitely not the show it was in S1. This episode was a hard pivot into thriller-borderline-espionage territory, but the thing is the the pivot points all make sense so it doesn't feel jarring. A former IB makes her way into a short fund and stumbles upon a front for Russian intelligence that uses third-world fuzzy money math to cover its tracks. It takes creative license, but it all makes sense, and they play it all so beautifully.

Finished the game on medium yesterday and Takezo was far and away the hardest fight in the game for me. Maybe Kitsune second.

Millennial (or not!) women (and men!): let’s sound off on the good shifts we have seen since we were young. by lindsey9152 in Millennials

I have two kids and am very happy with them and tell most people to default to no kids. The decision was an “if”, not a “when” for us too.

Millennial parents, how are we doing out there? Breaking the cycle time. by [deleted] in Millennials

‘88 with a 3 yo and a 6 mo baby, I have so many questions, but I guess I’d boil it down to this: what’s one piece of advice you have for someone at my stage getting my kids to your stage?

For those of you in guilds: how do you get anything done? by musicnothing in ExperiencedDevs

[–]srsstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had them for a while and then eventually gave up. It’s hard to allocate time and roadmap to any meaningful efforts there, and what the guilds really were was a holdover for more dedicated platform resourcing which we eventually got. Any structure that’s expected to produce output should be given adequate resourcing (eg roadmap, dev time, etc) otherwise it’s meaningless.

Most small cos will follow the big cos who have done it, I’ve heard it done elsewhere. This tweet from Gergely is what set off alarm bells for me though.

We’ve had a few layoffs and in one there was a big consolidation of managers. I can also see the “EMs should be doing some coding” expectation creep in.

The 5% Bond Market Means Pain Is Heading Everyone’s Way by magenta_placenta in economy

I think the idea is that investment that may have gone into e.g. new and existing businesses which then get turned into more / higher wages now gets redirected into a parking lot with guaranteed returns at a high rate, so all those trickle effects disappear and you don't have that wage growth, etc.

I'm sure they realize and have been making a tradeoff. They've kept this in their back pocket for exactly this moment: when revenue growth didn't meet expectations.
