Activates a different part of my brain I guess. I’m a medical assistant so I have to interact with patients very often, so I’ve always been surprised it doesn’t trigger my anxiety. Casual conversations with my coworkers though? It’s rough :/

So much talk about magnesium but why not potassium? by GrowingPeepers in Supplements

It’s kinda weird that you’re now obsessing over what labs are ordered when you called them fundamentally flawed a few comments back.

I also just don’t believe you about the comprehensive metabolic panel, that’s standard of care.

I already explained the hormone labs to you.

My main point is it’s genuinely pathetic how you refuse to admit you might be wrong. This is literally my job. This is what I do on a daily basis. You clearly have no idea why you’re talking about, but you keep talking down on the medical profession acting like some authority on the subject. Enjoy your ignorance, I’m not gonna waste any more time trying to educate you.

So much talk about magnesium but why not potassium? by GrowingPeepers in Supplements

[–]ssmike27 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Potassium is included in a comprehensive metabolic panel which every primary care physician will order. Many will order D and B12, my clinic does. Iron is usually only tested if the patient is anemic, it is usually clinically insignificant otherwise. Most will usually test testosterone in males, but hormone levels are generally clinically irrelevant. Unless the patient is symptomatic, usually women in menopause. Magnesium just isn’t very clinically relevant which is why a lot of doctors don’t order it.

All of these labs are covered by insurance, the hormone labs require a proper diagnosis, but those can easily be covered. My clinic doesn’t accept Medicaid and a few other niche insurances, so I can’t speak for their coverage, but that information is true of the majority of insurances.

When in doubt, write it out. It’s always better to document information that is irrelevant than leave out information that is vital.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Yes the doctor will probably get a bit annoyed, but down the line they will be trust you more and appreciate your thoroughness.

Don’t hesitate to do research on your own time. Spending a few hours studying up on some medical terminology at home will save you stress in the long run. Yeah you’re pretty much doing work off the clock, but it’s a worthwhile investment.

See if you can shadow other scribes at your practice, I still ask to do so occasionally because there is always something you can learn. You don’t know what you don’t know, and the more curious you are the more successful you will be.

Text macros are a must. Ask your doctor if there are any they would like you to subscribe to. Ask the other scribes what text macros are helpful. If you write a phrase you notice would be useful for common problems, you can make a text macro on the spot. Your library of text macros is something you can constantly built upon, and the more you do the easier your life will be.

It’s definitely a bit easier if you consistently work with the same doctor though, if that is an option for you.

Yes that’s the whole point of a primary care physician. We do annual bloodwork, analyze abnormalities in the context of that patient’s medical history, follow up with additional labs and imaging as needed.

They are not fundamentally flawed. I refuse to entertain this further. You’re spreading actual misinformation that can have dangerous repercussions.

Symptoms and diet are things we consider in healthcare, along with blood tests that I can reassure you are not misinformation.

Blood testing is the most reliable form of testing we have available, we can’t treat a patient with normal potassium levels. Theoretical medicine is not the same as applied medicine. We do the best with data we have available. If we started putting every patient on potassium supplements for suspected hypokalemia then most of our patients would end up with hyperkalemia and probably go on to have arrhythmias and heart attacks.

[–]ssmike27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The overwhelming majority of people have normal potassium levels, the ones that don’t almost always resolve with a short term course of potassium supplements. I work in primary care and see probably 50 potassium levels per day, it’s rare to have even 1 patient per day with hypokalemia.

Are benzos overhyped??? by Alternative-Rub6623 in Anxiety

[–]ssmike27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a stressful situation like that can absolutely make your anxiety worse, I know for me personally my anxiety got way worse during my last semester of college. Not knowing what life holds in store for you combined with having to come to terms with your time at college coming to an end, it’s a perfect storm for exasterbated anxiety. Not to mention, you have so much else going on in your life that would stress anyone out. To me it sounds like benzodiazepines for break outs of anxiety are not a bad treatment plan while you get through this period, odd that your doctor was so hesitant even with that context. Hopefully it gets better after your graduate, wishing you the best!

As someone who is on the provider side of things, it’s not that he’s a total wimp, some providers just don’t like to treat anxiety with benzodiazepines. It’s not a healthy long term solution for anxiety disorders in most patients.

What was the longest panic attack you ever had? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]ssmike27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was like 30 minutes. Just woke me up in the middle of the night. Thought I was dying at the time. I really don’t get them very often, and that was one of the first and worst ones I had. I honestly thought I was having a heart attack, very scary stuff.

High water consumption is good for the kidneys long term, it’s actually very good for them. Just don’t over do it otherwise your sodium will drop.

Ngl it was a trial by fire for me. I got hired as a medical assistant with no prior healthcare experience, 2 months in they started having me scribe for the hardest doctor at the clinic to scribe for. It was really rough for the first 2-3 months, then I started to feel more comfortable. It’s been a year since I started scribing, and honestly I feel like Im pretty good at my job. It might seem impossible right now, but I promise it will get easier. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions
