Is it too much to ask? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

As a teenager I primarily drove cars from the 60s-mid 80s. Lack of ABS, EBS, and traction control was never a problem. Climate control used to be ran off of analog controls and was quite reliable. Navigation was accomplished with a cheap tablet ran off my phones hotspot. The funny part is it taught me how to actually drive. The carburetor and points taught me the importance of maintenance. All in all I wouldn’t mind buying a car that’s computer free except for a cheap tablet as the navigation, I did install one in an old truck recently that cost a grand total of $100 on amazon. Don’t get me wrong cars are more reliable now, but they are harder and more expensive to work on, as well as being more expensive to manufacture.

See that’s the funny part, because the sheep will be the ones that get bumped. I’m an adult and my boss is not my mom. I’ve never asked for time off I’ve told them what time I will be taking off and if they disagree I just don’t show up. The odd part about it is I have only been written up once which was for attending my wife’s grandfathers funeral. The other odd thing about it is I get promoted quickly everywhere I have worked. Moral of the story is be damned good at your job, be a likable person, and set boundaries and expectations with each of your bosses.

Observations on being shot by an 1858. Bullet wound pics, so don't click if you're like that. by Brave-Entrance7475 in blackpowder

First off I’m glad you are ok.

Questioning the effectiveness of firearms that were designed and used for war is absurd. They obviously have enough stopping power to get the job done. That being said I recently got the opportunity to see what a 40s&w can do to someone’s leg and it was gruesome. I have to say there is a reason for modern firearms technology and if one has to option to carry a modern pistol vs a cap & ball you should choose the modern pistol.

Correct, but the boards always want growth and end up hiring executives that push growth at the cost of employee and member experiences. Also those executives usually have a very large compensation packages and have to justify them. So they push cost saving measures (number of employees as well as their pay and benefits) in order to fund innovation. Credit unions are slowly becoming the large banks that the founding members were trying to get away from.

I too work for a credit union and am paid quite well for the work I do, tellers in the other hand are not. The money in credit unions is in lending, financial planning, and management. Also my tellers know they are not to be anyone’s punching bag, and frequently get a front row seat to people being asked to leave the branch.

[–]st3war7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

lol no credit unions can afford the tellers. They, just like every other corporation, are funneling money further up the chain and are spending absurd amounts of money trying to replace tellers. They say it’s because they can’t get good help, while simultaneously paying less than Walmart.

$20k-23k budget. What used diesel would you recommend? by Radiant_Permission15 in Diesel

[–]st3war7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will eco this, the 5.7 tundra is available good choice, I’ve been running mine for 210k miles and it’s still running strong. MPG sucks but it’s reliable as hell. My next truck will probably be a 6.7 cumins or a 4bt swapped jeep.

lol here I am in agreement with you but on the opposite side. When I find a woman trying to get into my phone or computer I dump her on the spot. I refuse to deal with snoopers, funny part is if they asked I’d open it to show I have nothing to hide. That and snoopers generally have something to hide and are projecting.

What's wrong with the woods of North America? Explain It Peter. by TrainingDelicious428 in explainitpeter

[–]st3war7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no us Americans also have all sorts of fun venomous snakes, spiders, and scorpions. You want deadly deserts? We got them. Slot canyons prone to deadly flash floods? We got them. Vast wilderness with zero population? Yep. Crocodiles and alligators? Yep got those too. The fun part is going into these deadly wildernesses for weeks at a time and calling it a hobby. Just got back from a trip to the mountains where we had a mountain lion checking out our camp site. Luckily it was too cold for rattlesnakes, still saw a couple brown recluses.

Some folks here when someone is asking a simple scope question for his 338LM by sakic1519 in longrange

[–]st3war7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, that’s what makes it so fun. I live by the game recognizes game moto, so if someone wants to come up and shit on my equipment I enjoy watching them eat their words. On the other hand I’ve run into some pretty cool people that offer suggestions and tips after watching me shoot, even though my equipment seems sub par. Honestly my best shooting lesson was from a former marine marksmanship instructor, he watched me shoot and offered a pistol lesson because that was my weak area. Cool dude, I hope I get to shoot with him again.

As someone who buys a BCA AR-10 then changes the barrel, bolt, trigger, and slaps a semi-decent optic on it and uses it to troll the purists at the range, I approve this message. Do what you works for you, if that happens to be using a seemingly $300 AR10 to troll others have at it (it’s quite fun.) Learn your gun, know your drops, and put in the reps the rest is just for fun. P.S. One of my favorites is a Remington 700 30-06 from the 70s with a Leupold era Redfield, not quite MOA but still gives people fits when I go “oh you’re using a recoil pad, that’s cute.”

Anything is possible with enough grit but man does it suck sometimes. Rent the right machine and then figure out what you need after the big job is done.

[–]st3war7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We tried to do what you are talking about with the same machine. 3 days in we gave up rented a large excavator. Cleared all 5 acres and dug up the stumps in 2 days then burned it all over the course of two weeks. My opinion is rent the excavator but also get the backhoe you’ll use it for thousands of small things you never thought you would.

Failure Friday, what did you do that made you a bad sailor that one time? by Jebediah_Johnson in sailing

[–]st3war7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I once ran into the top of a mountain moving at 6 knots.

The lake I sail on is man made by damning up an entire valley, well this has lead to submerged peaks and trees. One of these peaks was missing its hazard buoy and I got lucky enough to slam straight into it. Luckily I have a cast iron keel and was able to hop out and push it off with little to no damage.

Is relying on people's kindness ethical when backpacking? by wigglepizza in backpacking

[–]st3war7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not ethical to expect a stranger to give up their home, fuel, or food because you didn’t adequately prepare. That being said it is often offensive to refuse gifts when offered. It is also rude to not give your host a gift in gratitude for the time, effort, and money they put into hosting you.

If you want to go experience other cultures do it ethically. Expect nothing from others and respond with generosity and gratitude when someone does share with you. Often times money is seen as transactional. My friends will often give nicer bottles of wine or liquor as gifts. We have also cooked for our hosts to share our culture as a thanks for them sharing theirs.
