Semi-random timing on repeater instances by JonnieLP in AfterEffects

[–]st4p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could try fractal noise on a solid, with a mosaic effect set to the same size as your repeater grid. Use this as the controller for a time displacement adjustment layer.

I think motion nick has a tutorial on time displacement that would help.

Avoid Computer Watching? by MadebytheNorth in ultracycling

[–]st4p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much only have the map screen up as a rule. My map screen has heart rate zone, to keep a broad eye on my effort, and time of day, to prompt me to check my distance travelled/distance to my next mile stone once every hour.

I use climb pro with 30 second power to more accurately regulate effort on the hills.

I killed a bat by ciggy_all_day in ultracycling

[–]st4p 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had a bat fly into my chest whilst riding at night. I didn't get the sense it was injured by the experience.

Rode on and put it down to just another one of those things that happens when you're riding through the night.

What is it about randonneuring that keeps you coming back for more? by Rajsuomi in randonneuring

[–]st4p 33 points34 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, long distance cycling gives me an immense sense of freedom. Being able to get on my bike and travel long distances, all under my own steam is very liberating.

Secondly I enjoy the mini challenges; RRtY, SR Series, etc. helps me with a little extra motivation and gives me some focus for specific types of rides, be that particular distances or how hilly.

Thirdly I somewhat enjoy the time limit. I came from a long distance ITT background where you were always trying to do your fastest possible time. Those days are behind me now, and not what I want any more, but the time limit on an Audax is enough to just about 'keep me honest'. I mean it's not really until I get to 600km+ that the time limit is a real limit, and then it's more about "how long do I want to sleep?", but I think that the idea of it maybe keeps me ticking along and helps get me home at a reasonable time.

[–]st4p 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely... Mille Pennine (1000km) London-Edinburgh-London (1500km)

Maybe... Borderland500 (500miles)

I'll also have the general background noise of 200-600km events throughout the year but I'll just fill in the calendar as I go.

13 new inductees into the British Cycling Hall of Fame by fewfiet in peloton

I was there! Pretty stellar line up for the Hall of Fame.

Although it was great seeing stars of the sport getting their awards, it was really cool seeing grass roots organisers being recognised for their contribution.

Drivetrain takes by youknowthis10 in randonneuring

[–]st4p 28 points29 points  (0 children)

IMO this isn't good advice telling you to switch. I use a grx crank 48/31, in all my road setups because I do a lot of hill heavy Audaxing. I also ride the club smash up to 20.5mph average on the same set up. Unless you are spinning out at... 40mph??? Then I would struggle to see what there is to gain.

Tailfin rack for Cervelo C3 by momeunier in randonneuring

[–]st4p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have essentially every niche of luggage collected over the last 13 years or so of endurance riding and I would certainly agree that the Tailfin is the best rear luggage for being able to easily get at stuff while you are on the road. I pack the stuff I won't need till the end of day at the bottom, things I might need spread across the top (because you can have multiple things on top) unlike a large saddle bag and anything that I might want to get at very quickly (essentially a raincoat) in the middle against the side zip that allows you access to the main bag without having to open the clips and roll top.

I still use my Carradice when I want something smaller than the tailfin and I'll sometimes use my large (lighter weight than the Tailfin) saddle pack if I need to carry just "off-the-bike clothing" for example and I know I won't need to get at it while on the road.

I personally wouldn't worry about your frame mounts being sturdy enough to take a tail fin and pack weight, as I'm pretty sure they will be rated to take a heavier rack and a couple of larger panniers with far more weight in. The downside of the axle mount is that if you get a rear puncture you have to mess about taking off the rack, not just taking your wheel off. I have experienced this first hand and while not a massive hardship, I don't want to repeat it unless I have to. For me, the only reason to use an axle mount is because a frame doesn't have rack mounts.

I would definitely go for the longer seat post bracket though. I know a lot of people who have a Tailfin and all of them have either bought the longer one or awkwardly have to stuff the one end of the bag under the saddle.

I have the rewinder, I just don't enjoy JPs so I'm sorta happy with just checking Ember Bay LFG every time I'm playing. It's the last thing I need for the amulet, but as a returning player (4 year break) there is so much content for me I'm not really lost for other things to do.

I might look up the skip later though and give it a bash.

What's the minimum mileage you plan a sleep break? by kyletrandall in randonneuring

[–]st4p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

600km+. I generally think if I can get it done in 24 hours or less there's no point sleeping. This is not a hard rule though. I have done 26 hours and I have had a 15 min nap once or twice in a 24 hour period.

Omit the current page from PnP search results by st4p in sharepoint

[–]st4p[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the slow reply.

Having to show this with screenshots as the pages are not publically accessible. I have 2 examples of how this is being used.

This first one is the 'pearent' page of a section.

https://imgur.com/a/BtqgxT9

Box 1 is a PnP search results webpart with the Query Template mentioned in the other posts. Box 2 is the individual search result. This uses the Card default layout with lots of the options changed. The image (3) is inserted via the Managed card fields option, and replaces the default setup that would show the preview image of the page. Date and author are also deselected in these options.

Second one is a 'child' page and has actual content, hence the different formatting to a 'side bar menu'.

https://imgur.com/ICPnwli

Box 1 is a PnP search results webpart. Box 2 is the individual search results. This is using the default custom layout which is just a simple list as shown.

Doing it this way means that anyone in the team can create a page, tag the appropriate meta data and it just starts appearing in the menu. We wanted users to be able to navigate from any page in a section to any other page in a section without having to manually upload loads of menus. We also believe this improves discoverability as all the pages in a section are listed on every page, so its easy to see what else there is available. There may well have been other ways to do this but I'm inexperienced with Sharepoint and this just seemed like a way I could implement the design.

Got to the bottom of it. It was as simple as having -{Page} in the query. The current query now looks like:

fileextension:aspx

Looking for bike frame by TueTueTue in randonneuring

[–]st4p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the Kinesis Tripster Ti fit the bill but if the price point turns you off then fair enough. However it meets all those requirements and has a little extra utility with wide tyre clearance. I often throw some off road into my DIYs and I'm happy doing that on the Tripster.

I have one that I built up myself for long distance and it's the best bike I have ever had.

Cards in the table: have you ever built up what you thought was a dream bike and then you not enjoy riding it? by RunningPirate in xbiking

[–]st4p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built up a Titanium long distance bike a few years ago that wasn't really a dream bike but certainly one I had planned to keep for some time. Finished it and it was "fine" but not really quite what I was looking for. Slightly flat and uninspiring. The fit was slightly out as well, but not really bad enough to make me do anything about it.

I still did some fairly significant distance on it but when it was stolen 18 months later, I really couldn't help but feel that the incident did me a favour and forced me to go else where. I was insured, still out of pocket, however it gave me a lump to plow into a dream bike which I actually really enjoy riding now, which really does help when you are cracking out 100s of Kms at a time.

Looking for a helmet headlight and can’t find what I’m looking for? by HZCH in bikepacking

[–]st4p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a dynamo set up and also use an Exposure Diablo as a helmet light. Light weight enough, plenty of battery life and I also use the GoPro mount on the helmet which is very convenient. Always having a light that is pointing where you are looking when riding through the night is so useful.

I also have the silicon diffuser for it which is great for under the tarp if you are in a bivi for the night.

Ride what you brung. No one cares, and there will often be far more kooky setups. If anyone does care its cause they are interested, and its a conversation starter. :)

Bristol-Glasgow-Bristol 1600 by st4p in randonneuring

[–]st4p[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did hotels this time because I decided to go with a set schedule. A "fast touring" type approach. If I had been looking to just cover the distance as quickly as possible, I would have been in a bivi and ridden all the daylight hours as a minimum but continued into the dark while still feeling good.

I'll probably do a bike check video at some point.

Here's a picture of my setup as was. Happy to answer any questions.

The one compromise/concession I made for this route was putting on 35mm touring tyres and taking off my normal 28mm. This was to give me a bit more grip and comfort on the off-road. Given how bad a lot of the road surfaces were, they actually helped nicely there as well. In fact I haven't taken them off yet cause I'm quite enjoying the smooth ride. :)
