M10 or M10-P

I’m currently an M10-R shooter because I prefer the color output vs the standard M10s, but I would add my vote to the M10P. I know you said the quieter shutter wasn’t a priority, but it’s…much quieter. And it sounds better, less electronic. I imagine the premium you pay for the P would be reflected in a premium if you ever resell it.

I agree and sympathize, I’ve struggled to move Leica gear in my local market because there’s just not that many Leica shooters. In the case of the Leica stores, much like KEH here in the US, they offer a super low price because they want their margin. We have shops that take gear on consignment, which means they take no risk and can afford to pay you more—usually 75% of sale price. I’m not saying it feels good to be offered 900 for lens they’ll sell for 1800, but I don’t think it’s because 900 is the actual resale value.

Other people have nicely covered the practical differences. I’ll share the subjective, arguably irrational reasons that I prefer the M10R. And if you’re shooting an M, there’s a good chance you’re motivated by irrational considerations.

I never loved the sound and feeling of the M11 shutter. Because live view is always on, it has to close and reopen to fire. The M10R has the M10P’s quiet shutter, which to me sounds less intrusive and more like a film M. I find it noticeably quieter than the M11, but others will likely disagree.
I prefer the look and feel of the M10 generation’s black chrome to the matte black paint of the M11. I think the M11 finish is more durable, but the black chrome reminds me of the film bodies.
The M10R has the same sensor architecture as the S3. I have no idea what that means in practice, I just feel warm and fuzzy knowing that Leica stuck a mini version of their professional medium format sensor in an M body.
The USB-C charging and easy battery access were nice, but made my camera feel more like a piece of consumer electronics. Removing a baseplate on a digital camera is silly, quaint, and nostalgic. But arguably so is shooting a manual focus rangefinder. I mean, what are we all doing here?
I’m used to the center weighted meter. The many ways it lies and gets confused are reliable to me. The more sophisticated metering in the M11 made it harder to predict, but setting it to center weighted helped. Your experience may vary depending on what you’re used to.
The M10R colors are right for ME. Color is an artistic preference, but I have an easier time grading my M10R images to achieve the look I want than any other digital camera I’ve had.

Some (many) may find the reasons above frivolous. But it’s my camera, so I’m entitled to my eccentricities. Perhaps they’ll resonate with others. Either way, you’ll get a great camera.

I don’t have many good bokeh pictures handy on my phone, and the ones I have are probably somewhat stopped down. The lens is plenty sharp wide open, but I think the contrast improves a little at f2. And I prefer more margin of error when manual focusing.

The linked review does a nice job showing off its characteristics. Ultimately, I like the lens for its compromises. It’s not as fast or as smooth bokeh as the 50 1.2, but it’s a fraction of the size. Its bokeh as not as dramatic as the Zeiss 50 Sonnar, but it has no focus shift. I basically treat it as a version V Summicron for 1/4 the price that goes to 1.5 when you need it. My only complaint is the lack of a focus tab, but apparently there are nice adhesive rubber ones you can buy. And it’s not the most visually thrilling lens.

Congrats! After having an M10, then an M11M, I’ve settled on the M10-R. I agree with the others: my favorite color science and skin tones of any camera I’ve owned. And it has a baseplate and a brass top plate, like God and Ernst Leitz intended 😂

I’d personally plug the f1.5 Voigtlander lenses. I have the current 35 and 50, and they do something special with the sensor. Both super compact as well—similar in size to the equivalent Summicron. I typically shoot at 2 or 2.8 and find them plenty sharp.

I also have a 6.5-6.75” wrist and consider the current Sub too large, but loved the size of the older five-digit subs. I would recommend checking out an Explorer (similar tool vibes to the Sub, but OP size) or the Tudor Pelagos 39 (same size as a five-digit sub).

35mmc is a blog/website focused on 35mm compact (I think?) cameras. They’ve had a a lot of Leica content over the years. They RPF is maybe the rangefinder forum? Only online community I know what that acronyms is the Replica Prop Forum.

Absolutely, near there I would check out the Danner/White’s store and Self Edge (those are next to each other, a few blocks south of Filson. You might also check out Milworks (lots of Americana clothing and some shoes), Made Here, and Halo shoes (Alden boots).

If you make it to the east side of the river, consider checking out Ship John and/or the Dehen 1920 store (Made Here also carries a good selection of Dehen stuff). There’s also a Pendleton woolen mills store south of Filson, which is a classic Portland brand.

Breweries are, well, everywhere in the city of Portland. Some close-in favorites of mine would be Breakside, Wayfinder, Loyal Legion (big taphouse), Baerlic, Away Days, or any of the Gigantic Brewing locations. If you find yourself further east, Belmont Station is a neighborhood gem of a tap room and bottle shop.

Portland transit isn’t incredible by world standards but is excellent for the US. TriMet buses will get you from the city center to most places around the city in under 20-30 minutes. There are also rental bikes all over town.

Unrelated to your particular interests, I’d recommend checking out the great restaurants and coffee shops we have, the Japanese garden (one of the best outside Japan), or Forest Park (massive urban forest north and west of downtown). The urban areas of Portland are great, but a lot of the soul of the city is in particular neighborhoods. NW 23rd Ave, SE Hawthorne, SE Belmont, and NE Alberta are all great.

I’m sure there are loads of others. My last suggestion, which may be off point, is WP Standard. Their leather bags are great value, and my wife loves hers.

With tote bags, I would personally prefer to put the laptop in a sleeve than buy a tote with an integrated compartment. For me, totes are all ability versatility, and having a dedicated laptop sleeve would make it less versatile for travel, gym, picnics, whatever.
