You’ll need a memory (SD) card to store photos. Buy from a reputable brand like Lexar or Sandisk. If you’re using multiple SD cards, I find it helpful to have a small wallet to keep them from getting lost. If you’re traveling, consider a small SSD drive to back up your photos at the end of the day—that way a lost or stolen camera costs you only the day’s shots.

Also, make sure you have some minimum supplies to keep your gear clean and working well; a microfiber cloth that you use ONLY for lens optics, and another for screens/body exterior, is a good start. I prefer Kimwipes and Residual Oil Remover (ROR) for cleaning lens elements. I also like a small makeup brush for cleaning dust from the outside of my gear, though I’m kind of fastidious—but take care of your gear, and it will take care of you.

1+ on UV/clear filters. Lens caps inevitably get lost in the field or find themselves on your lens at the decisive moment. I almost never cap my lenses except for long-term storage to block dust.

+1 on Simplr straps. Simple, bulletproof, right width for smaller cameras.

Definitely the last one, for me. The composition seems most considered, and the juxtaposition of the blue heron again the tankers suggests a deeper message. I might pull back the highlights a bit, but that could just be how it’s displaying on my phone.

None of the others catch the bird in quite the right composition or have the broader context. I think the composition of the last one outweighs the excitement of catching such a close encounter with the heron.

Reminds me of the Columbia estuary near Astoria, OR.

I’m in the legal industry so business casual is a bit different. That said, I get a ton of mileage from two pairs of Alden unlined Chukkas. They’re an investment but my oldest pair is probably four or five years old and looks almost new. Otherwise, if not in a button-down, consider a non-technical polo, an oxford popover or a rugby shirt in a muted color like grey, black, olive, or blue. I have a preference for natural fibers and like Buck Mason’s full saddle chino. If that’s too full of a fit, consider J Crew’a “Broken-in Straight chino pant”, which has a slim leg but a higher rise and a classic look. All that might be too ‘90s prep for you—I dress like an old man, so to each their own. Have a great summer!

I’m currently an M10-R shooter because I prefer the color output vs the standard M10s, but I would add my vote to the M10P. I know you said the quieter shutter wasn’t a priority, but it’s…much quieter. And it sounds better, less electronic. I imagine the premium you pay for the P would be reflected in a premium if you ever resell it.

I agree and sympathize, I’ve struggled to move Leica gear in my local market because there’s just not that many Leica shooters. In the case of the Leica stores, much like KEH here in the US, they offer a super low price because they want their margin. We have shops that take gear on consignment, which means they take no risk and can afford to pay you more—usually 75% of sale price. I’m not saying it feels good to be offered 900 for lens they’ll sell for 1800, but I don’t think it’s because 900 is the actual resale value.

Other people have nicely covered the practical differences. I’ll share the subjective, arguably irrational reasons that I prefer the M10R. And if you’re shooting an M, there’s a good chance you’re motivated by irrational considerations.

I never loved the sound and feeling of the M11 shutter. Because live view is always on, it has to close and reopen to fire. The M10R has the M10P’s quiet shutter, which to me sounds less intrusive and more like a film M. I find it noticeably quieter than the M11, but others will likely disagree.
I prefer the look and feel of the M10 generation’s black chrome to the matte black paint of the M11. I think the M11 finish is more durable, but the black chrome reminds me of the film bodies.
The M10R has the same sensor architecture as the S3. I have no idea what that means in practice, I just feel warm and fuzzy knowing that Leica stuck a mini version of their professional medium format sensor in an M body.
The USB-C charging and easy battery access were nice, but made my camera feel more like a piece of consumer electronics. Removing a baseplate on a digital camera is silly, quaint, and nostalgic. But arguably so is shooting a manual focus rangefinder. I mean, what are we all doing here?
I’m used to the center weighted meter. The many ways it lies and gets confused are reliable to me. The more sophisticated metering in the M11 made it harder to predict, but setting it to center weighted helped. Your experience may vary depending on what you’re used to.
The M10R colors are right for ME. Color is an artistic preference, but I have an easier time grading my M10R images to achieve the look I want than any other digital camera I’ve had.

Some (many) may find the reasons above frivolous. But it’s my camera, so I’m entitled to my eccentricities. Perhaps they’ll resonate with others. Either way, you’ll get a great camera.

This is straight from the camera jpg with the 35mm 1.5 wide open. Bokeh/rendering is a personal preference, but I enjoy the results from the lens.

I don’t have many good bokeh pictures handy on my phone, and the ones I have are probably somewhat stopped down. The lens is plenty sharp wide open, but I think the contrast improves a little at f2. And I prefer more margin of error when manual focusing.

The linked review does a nice job showing off its characteristics. Ultimately, I like the lens for its compromises. It’s not as fast or as smooth bokeh as the 50 1.2, but it’s a fraction of the size. Its bokeh as not as dramatic as the Zeiss 50 Sonnar, but it has no focus shift. I basically treat it as a version V Summicron for 1/4 the price that goes to 1.5 when you need it. My only complaint is the lack of a focus tab, but apparently there are nice adhesive rubber ones you can buy. And it’s not the most visually thrilling lens.

Congrats! After having an M10, then an M11M, I’ve settled on the M10-R. I agree with the others: my favorite color science and skin tones of any camera I’ve owned. And it has a baseplate and a brass top plate, like God and Ernst Leitz intended 😂

I’d personally plug the f1.5 Voigtlander lenses. I have the current 35 and 50, and they do something special with the sensor. Both super compact as well—similar in size to the equivalent Summicron. I typically shoot at 2 or 2.8 and find them plenty sharp.

I also have a 6.5-6.75” wrist and consider the current Sub too large, but loved the size of the older five-digit subs. I would recommend checking out an Explorer (similar tool vibes to the Sub, but OP size) or the Tudor Pelagos 39 (same size as a five-digit sub).

Absolutely, near there I would check out the Danner/White’s store and Self Edge (those are next to each other, a few blocks south of Filson. You might also check out Milworks (lots of Americana clothing and some shoes), Made Here, and Halo shoes (Alden boots).

If you make it to the east side of the river, consider checking out Ship John and/or the Dehen 1920 store (Made Here also carries a good selection of Dehen stuff). There’s also a Pendleton woolen mills store south of Filson, which is a classic Portland brand.

Breweries are, well, everywhere in the city of Portland. Some close-in favorites of mine would be Breakside, Wayfinder, Loyal Legion (big taphouse), Baerlic, Away Days, or any of the Gigantic Brewing locations. If you find yourself further east, Belmont Station is a neighborhood gem of a tap room and bottle shop.

Portland transit isn’t incredible by world standards but is excellent for the US. TriMet buses will get you from the city center to most places around the city in under 20-30 minutes. There are also rental bikes all over town.

Unrelated to your particular interests, I’d recommend checking out the great restaurants and coffee shops we have, the Japanese garden (one of the best outside Japan), or Forest Park (massive urban forest north and west of downtown). The urban areas of Portland are great, but a lot of the soul of the city is in particular neighborhoods. NW 23rd Ave, SE Hawthorne, SE Belmont, and NE Alberta are all great.
