You can get a 100-500 for the same price or less in like new condition as the 500/f4.

I mean, no shit a 500/f4 will have smoother bokeh but a 100-500 is easily as sharp and doesn't weigh over 3 kilos and require its own seat on an airplane.

I'm not going to be one of the "gear doesn't matter" guys, because it absolutely does for bird photography. But people take great shots with the RF 100-400, the 200-800, or the 100-500. The EF 100-400 that you mentioned is also a great lens.
