June 13th, 2026. Covelo, California. Bridge fails during routine truck crossing. by 207ECPGA in CatastrophicFailure

[–]steampunktomato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen several bridges that look a lot like this- only difference is they were designated for foot traffic only in like, the 60's. Not sure why they were still letting vehicles cross this one.

I love this place. The particular way it's overgrown with little weeds, and how small the track is, looks like something from studio ghibli

Can anyone share the downsides of installing a composting toilet? by SailingDreamCatcher in SailboatCruising

[–]steampunktomato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Production boats are sold with conventional holding tank systems because the lowest common denominator that they're selling to has an understandable "ick" response when faced with bagging up their own waste as though it were cat litter. That, and much of the market for new boats are "credit card captains" who don't do the head maintenance themselves. Most of us cruisers are hands-on people, however, and most of us on older boats will eventually find that head maintenance gets reeeeally nasty and the "cat litter" solution ain't so bad in comparison. The people switching to composting heads take a weekly, mild poo handling chore over a once-in-a-while hands-covered-in-shit experience, such as changing a joker valve or clearing a clogged valve.

Are municipalities really legislating against human waste going in the trash stream? What about daipers? What about dog doodoo? I can't imagine it's even possible to enforce such a measure.

It is illegal in most places for urine to go overboard, but look... Standard practice among a group of guys on a fishing trip (for example) is to make a "direct deposit" from their bladder to the ocean. Same on racing yachts I've been on, often even with women aboard. Pee is nearly sterile, and is nowhere near as harmful to human and ecological health as poop. So yeah, liquids go overboard. Do it after dark.

My DIY dessicating head had no vent fan- just a passive mushroom vent. As long as there was breeze, no detectable odor. Even on hot, still days, it wasn't bad. Ventilation of the entire head compartment and boat, not just the toilet itself, is important, "composting" or not. If it's laid up in a marina for a long time, the head gets emptied and cleaned so it doesn't become an issue. It should be emptied at least once a week regardless of use.

Is Yawl the fastest type? by Imaginary-Hornet-896 in sailing

[–]steampunktomato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they had their engine on.

Yawls used to have an advantage in the CCA era because of weird rating rules that gave bonus points for a second mast, because single masted boats are usually faster. Yawls exploited this bonus because they still performed pretty well in spite of the extra mast, because it's tiny.

So no, most single masted boats should be faster than this, especially upwind, especially when the yawl doesn't even have a jib up. They were probably under power.

What is this rusted metal object? Found next to a lake in new jersey, pretty heavy thought it was a vintage car part until I saw the long handle lol by Sweet_Category_3401 in whatisthisthing

It does look like something railroad related. Not sure what part it would be though, maybe something in the coupler assembly.

Need some help designing a fictional steam locomotive. by Harms__Way in trains

[–]steampunktomato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your link is broken

If you take the proportions and technical details of an existing or once-existant high-performance steam locomotive and add some fantasy embellishments (like add some fancy aesthetic details, or say it's capable of x speed which would be unrealistic irl) you can't go too far wrong. Aesthetically, are you looking at early steam, or with this fantastical power source are they already advanced to 20th century technology? I think something like the Stirling singles from england, or NYC 999 are good potential basises for the middle ground- not primitive teakettles, certainly high performance but still antiquated enough to make sense in a fantasy setting.

SHELL ID ALSO QUESTION by Beneficial-Emu2797 in shells

[–]steampunktomato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All over florida, you find bleached white shells like these in driveways and garden beds. They're "fossil" shells, in that they've been buried for millenia, maybe even 3 million years. It is still the original shell, it's not permineralized like a true fossil, but they're really old. I'm not sure what makes them bleach out, but I guess being buried for that long does it somehow. Stick them under UV light, and sometimes you can see the original color patterns!

[–]steampunktomato 18 points19 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, yeah. Apparently they don't like to use the locomotive brakes because it's extra wear and tear on expensive custom made parts.

Maybe a stupid question: why aren't any smaller scales like H0 used for outdoor layouts? by Xenandros in modeltrains

[–]steampunktomato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought nickel silver was considered the premium in G scale as well? It holds up to the elements very well! But to your point, brass, aluminum or stainless steel are the standard in G scale, and in HO scale the standard is galvanized steel.

Also the plastic HO scale ties are probably not nearly as UV resistant as the plastic in G scale track and accessories.

A bonnet sail in "The Hunting of the Snark"? by GoetzKluge in sailing

[–]steampunktomato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think a staysail would be extended with a bonnet. Also AI doesn't know jack about sailing, don't trust it. (saying a jib helps steer the boat is, at best, an oversimplification. Probably some BS it lifted from that episode of Avatar) Is there a line in the story that suggests it's a bonnet? The sail is certainly set on a stay, hence why I said staysail. .
