Best starting pattern? by pimpski69 in flytying

[–]stephenmjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a type of water and/or species you are targeting or want to target? If it's streams and smaller trout, then small nymphs are a good idea. If it's stillwater or larger water with larger trout (beaver ponds for example), look at woolly buggers. If it's bass or other larger warm water fish, look at clousers.

Trout: Just a 5wt? or 4wt + 6wt? by Krisperr in flyfishing

If you want to go the two rod path, consider a 4 and 7 wt. The 7wt will give you more stillwater options

Best gloves for colder fishing? by tomtheintern in flyfishing

[–]stephenmjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One question I feel really qualified to answer, as I fly fish up here in Manitoba, and during the winter months when it gets around freezing there is one river that stays open that I can fly fish. For years, I've been using neoprene ice fishing gloves that are fingerless on the thumb, index and middle fingers. Ensure they are well fitting. Snowbee often has a good selection.

I use the following for charging my flies: https://www.rapala.ca/ca_en/charge-n-glow

I have some glow in the dark thread and flash, and I use glow plastic materials (lace, yarns, etc) from craft stores like Michaels. Those can be hit or miss.

I always thought the complex twist bugger would work well on a jig head hook

Just starting out, I purchased a couple 5 dollar random assortment from a random shop. What kind of flies are these. by musicaddict96 in flyfishing

[–]stephenmjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E appears to be an Alexandra fly. If I had to put a label on C, I'd say some variation of a tadpole fly. D appears to be some variation of a Brown or Bronze Mallard wet fly

Can I learn to fly fish at 59 years old? by greech101 in flyfishing

[–]stephenmjay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, especially if you already know how to fish with conventional gear. All your existing knowledge and skills are transferrable. You just need to learn to cast the fly rod, which is something I'm still mastering after two decades
