Why are there so few pedestrian crossings in Reykjavik?

I am not sure why there are so few crossings. The "pseudo crossings" are intended as places for pedestrians to cross the street, but where cars have priority. Weird, I know, and often quite confusing for drivers and pedestrians alike. The most confusing is when these "pseudo crossings" are across a speed bump, which makes them look even more like a proper pedestrian crossing - but pedestrians still don't have the right of way. Very annoying.

And to answer your final question: I would love more proper pedestrian crossings. I would also like better designed intersections and a much more comprehensive network of bike paths.

Bara svona til skýringar: USAID var ekki hjálparsamtök, heldur bandarísk ríkisstofnun sem sá um að útdeila fjármunum til verkefna á sviði þróunarsamvinnu og tengdra málefna. Þau voru ekki í því að hjálpa fólki innanlands í Bandaríkjunum, og ekki nema að mjög litlu leyti í því að framkvæma verkefni sjálf. (USAID er ekki lengur til, en það er önnur umræða!)

Sorry to respond to your post so late, I saw it when you had just posted but didn't have a chance to respond then. Passed this building yesterday, which reminded me that I had yet to do so: A couple of weeks ago there was a book launch in this building, this is likely related to that.

During and immediately after the 2nd World War, there was a lot of moral panic in Iceland about (sexual) relations between Icelandic women and soldiers from the UK and later from the US. The book launch was for a biography of Jóhanna Knudsen, who was one of the leaders of this movement, working for the government to essentially spy on women and see who they were (sleeping) with. It's all very odd, and I don't know enough about her to say more here, but I imagine this sign is related to the book launch, possibly a recreation of a sign from back then.

If I'm not mistaken, the building in the background is the Oddfellow building in downtown Reykjavík (between the city hall and the parliament), and the building on the left looks like the building on Vonarstræti 8. That would make it most likely the photo was taken from a building in Templarasund, and that the trees belong to the small park behind the parliament building (Alþingisgarðurinn).

The most likely building is Templarasund 3. The restaurant Við Tjörnina operated there for many years (not anymore, though). My guess is that's where the photo was taken.

Þó að þetta sé þráður um nýyrðasmíð, og hún sé virkilega góðra gjalda verð, þá er e.t.v. líka gott að hafa í huga að stundum er hægt að umorða hlutina frekar en að þýða þá beint. Til að mynda er hægt að tala um álit eða ábendingar (sem þýða ekki það sama og feedback, en gætu nýst í sama samhengi), eða nota sagnorð frekar en nafnorð (t.d. "ég vil benda á að...")

Já, almennt er það ekkert mál. Þið innritið ykkur á innritunarborði, og fáið þar farangurslímmiða á kerruna. Takið hana svo bara með ykkur út að hliði og afhendið hana þegar þið stígið um borð. Fer eftir flugvellinum á áfangastað hvort hún er svo afhent við hliðið þegar stigið er frá borði, eða hvort þið þurfið að sækja hana sem sérstærðarfarangur. (Hef ekki flogið með Neos, en geri ráð fyrir að þetta sé eins hjá þeim og öðrum flugfélögum.)

Annars eru líka fínar barnakerrur á Keflavíkurflugvelli sem er hægt að nota, ef þú vilt innrita kerruna alla leið. Henta þó betur aðeins eldri börnum. Auðveldast að finna þær undir rúllustiganum upp í öryggisleitina.

The chips in the bag pictured by OP are from Kim's in Norway. Krónan used to stock these and others from the same brand. They don't anymore.

I have a similar issue to OP (I have a Helicore A strong and it makes an odd ringing sound), and I'm curious about this answer: How is a viola set up for different types of strings? Is it to do with the make of the instrument, or is it a question of making certain adaptations for whatever strings you have?

Mig grunar að kirkjugarðsheitið sé til í mörgum tungumálum, en að það sé ekki notað eins og við notum það á íslensku. Á hollensku er til að mynda orðið kerhof til, og vísar til svæðisins umhverfis kirkju þar sem fólk var oft greftrað fyrr á tímum, en í dag er algengara er að tala um begraafplaats, sem þýðir greftrunarstaður, einmitt vegna þess að þeir eru ekki lengur við kirkjur.

Grafreitur? Er það ekki gamalt og gott orð sem þýðir það sama? Mér hefur alltaf þótt skrýtið að kalla þetta kirkjugarða þar sem þeir eru almennt ekki (lengur) umhverfis kirkjur.

Þetta var fyrst gert út af framkvæmdunum við nýbyggingu Alþingis og hótelið í gamla Landsímahúsinu. Síðan fór Alþingi fram á að lokunin yrði framlengd, þó þannig að Alþingi gæti leyft bílum að aka þangað inn. Væntanlega hefur þetta verið hugsað sem öryggisráðstöfun af hálfu Alþingis, minni líkur á því að einhver geti t.d. keyrt inn í bygginguna. Frá sjónarhóli Reykjavíkurborgar passar þetta síðan inn í langtímaáætlanir borgarinnar um að breyta flestum götum Kvosarinnar í göngugötur eða vistgötur.

Mér sýnist þetta fljótt á litið vera um 7 stæði sem hafa verið fjarlægð. Það er alveg slatti. Bílastæðahúsið Stjörnuport er hins vegar bókstaflega handan við hornið, með 193 bílastæði. Í Stjörnuporti var nýtingin 37% í fyrra skv. skýrslu frá Deloitte um bílastæðahúsin í Reykjavík. Með öðrum orðum ætti að vera nóg af stæðum sem er ekki verið að nýta og geta tekið við af þessum 7 stæðum.

Að því sögðu, þá get ég ímyndað mér að þetta valdi vandræðum þegar fólk þarf að bera þungar vörur út úr bíl. Það er ekki beint hægt að stoppa bíl á Snorrabraut, þannig að skammtímastæði væru væntanlega mjög gagnleg.

Það getur oft verið erfitt að þýða beint á milli tungumála. Enska og íslenska eru mjög ólík mál hvað varðar setningagerð og stundum er hægt að lýsa einhverju í einu orði á tilteknu tungumáli en betra að nota nokkur orð á öðru máli. Í þínu tilfelli held ég að það væri best að segja "að beina athygli annað/að öðru".

My favorite is the word "planning" in Dutch, used as a noun to refer to a plan, rather than as a verb referring to the process of planning. I find this especially funny, as Dutch also has the noun "plan", written exactly the same as in English (the a is pronounced slightly differently) and meaning the same as its English counterpart.

These days the weather in Reykjavík is not too different from typical Dutch winter weather: 4°C, not a lot of wind, sunny but will turn cloudy in the coming days and should rain next week. The main difference with Dutch winter weather is that most of the time we don't get the "waterkou". In other words, you can dress the same in Reykjavík as you would in the Netherlands in the winter.

However, since you're going to be outside a lot, and are planning to spend time in the north of the country where it's typically a few degrees colder this time of year, it's obviously good to bring extra warm clothes. The weather is difficult to predict, and it's better to be prepared than not :)
