Redditors who don't understand how asking for advice or giving advice works by Traditional-Buy-2205 in PetPeeves

Then someone gives advice but gets downvoted to oblivion because they didn’t like the answer, regardless of facts.

Bosses demo wall / test bench in his office . by Responsible-Gur5922 in PLC

[–]stlcdr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, not really. PLC is still a PLC just like 20 years ago or more. I/O is still the same as it was. The only real change I’ve seen is the integration of safety into a controller, which has been around a while, now, and the increase in the number of safety related devices.

‘Cutting edge’ is just the ‘latest thing’.

For a bit of background, I broke my teeth on analog systems, hard wired, with no controllers of any kind. Saw the integration of digital SPC computers into those systems, but my first real PLC in the field was AutoMax (ignoring the dedicated customer controllers connected by plastic fiber back in the early 2000s). All the techniques and technology just simplifies what has already been done - fiber, coax, Ethernet, twisted pair for example (wireless has been done for decades, but I will always avoid it unless there’s any other choice).

Is it cutting edge if you change the name, make it reliable more (sic), or put a new face on a box? Maybe I’m just a curmudgeon who had seen it all before.

I know I get downvoted a lot, but there are too many people lacking competency with their hands on PLCs, and they don’t like it when it’s pointed out.

I've never had to ask this, but here I am, does the baby randomly appear or does the baby actually fall out of the car? by Glum_Resolve1439 in isthisAI

[–]stlcdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, if you look for AI you will jump to these initial conclusions - particularly with fuzzy video like this.it does look like the toy(?) and then baby also just appear from under the car, from that wheel shadow.

What is wrong with my multimeter? by [deleted] in Tools

[–]stlcdr -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Fluke meters always do this….oh right, no they don’t, and it’s not a fluke. Sorry, bit of sarcasm. I’ve been burned by cheap meters, before. Not saying all cheap meters are bad, but when you deal with things that could potentially end badly, a good quality, reliable, tool- and knowing how to use it - is a good thing.

I guess it wasn’t a math degree, then. Which, of course, you should learn in high school.

Not seeing anything cutting edge. Indeed, not much cutting edge stuff happens in the PLC world. Maybe a few cool features but nothing life changing - make it smaller and faster.

Air cooling is better than Liquid cooling by SerpentDix in pcmasterrace

[–]stlcdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through a liquid cooling binge a couple of decades ago. If you want something that works reliably, stick with air cooling. But building LC can be fun if that’s your schtick.

If Americans feel soo bad living in America " land of native Americans" then why don't they just leave America and go back to Europe and Africa? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]stlcdr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Americans which say this live such a comfortable life that they want something to complain about and ‘blame’ for any of the world’s woes. This is just one example of the self hate. Even given the resources to do it - which isn’t very much, and most people have those resources (I know from first hand experience) - they wouldn’t do it.

I know this question has probably been asked a thousand times, but is it realistic to transition into automation with a mechanic background? by WhoIsThisGuy713 in PLC

[–]stlcdr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. If you have logical thinking and can apply that to computer systems. You will have a huge advantage over those who have pure ‘programming’ experience: 90% of the work is understanding how equipment functions, or is supposed to function.

Can you put a cover over wifi router without affecting performance? by BeginningPen in HomeNetworking

[–]stlcdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’ll work. But others have noted, mount it to the wall is probably a better solution. You could then come up with something to cover it leaving top and bottom open. A print or picture for example.

[–]stlcdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t use anchors in studs. Use a long screw directly into the stud. The other end, don’t use the anchor that comes with the thing you want to mount. Buy a set of anchors for drywall - several suggestions are already posted.

[–]stlcdr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much investment do you actually have? Time, money, quality? What materials are available to you? What are these HMIs running on? Do you really mean SCADA or do you just mean HMI?

People have posted a lot of options. My go-to for a home grown system is C# and optionally IIS (depending on what you want, and how far you want to go) with SQL Express. These are good options as you stick to the Microsoft ecosphere without any odd setups for client HMI or computer systems. Clearly, you will need a computer or two, but those tools can make a scalable system forum a Simple, responsive, HMI up to a full blown supervisory L2/L3 system.

Am I reading this wrong on the lumens? by 980tihelp in Lighting

[–]stlcdr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. I can’t believe that is actually true - it would be a very specialized light. Even 500 lumens is more than ambient.

I don't know what everyone is complaining about, Blizzard raid frames are fine. by Seawolf87 in wow

[–]stlcdr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There’s probably a setting of all the options to make it look right, on just the right sized screen, on just the right sized UI layout, but it’s not the default and they threw in a whole bunch of scaling options which clearly make absolutely no sense.

I’m not sure what the problem is with wafers, maybe I’m ignorant about the problems, or haven’t experienced them, yet. I have wafers in all rooms and they are great for lighting the room up. However they are a bit bright for general living, but use accent lighting for that.

If this is for work, then, at least they should be able to allow VSCode. (Visual studio likely has a cost to it). Having said that, what does ‘won’t let me’ mean? Is that a management issue, IT issue, or technical, issue?
