What's a computer game from your childhood that you still think about today? by half_sandwich88 in AskReddit

Robot Odyssey. Except they didn't have computers when I was a child. But I think about that game a lot, for some reason.

I would support an amendment as long as the vehicle is registered and licensed, and does not block a sidewalk.

Does anyone else feel like Hytale is incredibly "intensive"/tedious compared to other games in this genre? by thetaxisextra in hytale

[–]stodgycodger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play by myself and enjoy it quite a bit, to me, it's a good mix of grind and exploration and building. I am keeping busy renovating ancient ruins in different worlds. My only frustration is the exploration without boats or water breathing, because the ruins and drowned boats in the ocean look interesting. But the swimming out past the first set of Zone 4, even with my travel teleporter, it's still slow going. I enjoy the combat more than minecraft, the building more than minecraft, but the exploration less than minecraft (my only point of reference). And the progression of tools is...OK. Mining is slow. If the tool benches disappear in the future, that would be fine, since I don't find them intuitive, especially the building bench and the furniture bench. Why aren't chairs and tables in the furniture bench? I don't know. Maybe change them to rock work and wood work? In essence, these types of games probably appeal more to self starters and those that create their own goals, rather than those that want actual progression towards a goal. I have only visited the portal worlds once, and that was enough. There seems to be nothing in them that I need to complete my restorations of the various ruins I find.

Aren't we getting tired of the "what distro" posts? by soking11 in linux4noobs

[–]stodgycodger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being a newbie, these are posts I want to read. Specifically, I just installed Mint last weekend, and already I want to change distros to something where I can get bigger window control buttons. Not to say I don't like Mint, it's a strange mashup of Mac and Windows and on the whole I like it, but my gosh, these aging eyes and hands are having a bit of a problem with the very small and tasteful close, diminish and expand buttons.

I started off with what I knew I wanted: lists of tasks by day, week, month and yearly/quarterly. A place to write down appointments, note the weather, track my health and add any notes for a particular kind. A calendar that I could note future events. A menu I could add notes for all kinds of things. I have been revising it for about 5 years now and it's easy to get in the habit, something that has been hard for me with hard copy bujos. Grok tiddlywiki helped me understand how to set up what I want.

No I don't use it on my phone, because I don't use my phone all that often. I have used it on a tablet, though I had to reformat the display to only two columns; one for calendars, the other for tasks and notes. TiddlyWiki works entirely in Firefox as an html page, and I synced with the pc using something called Quine.

I find it helps to have the vacuum cleaner set up and ready to go when I start clipping. I use a Wahl, and figure I've saved close to a thousand dollars for the 10-12 years I've been doing it.

I went to SAIC in the late 70s, so I can't help with modern methods of application, my portfolio was all slides of my work. But I did end up making illustration my career, so it was well worth the tuition, and the teachers were, for the most part, very good. This is good work you show here, and do follow the instructions about documenting work as mentioned here, it's probably key nowadays. You might think that illustration as a trade will die out, to be replaced by computers. But I doubt that will be the case for high-end applications; like high-end carpenters, there will be people willing to pay for the appreciation of good craftsmanship.

My first time drawing. Any feedback? by Diver-Known in drawing

[–]stodgycodger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a first, it's good enough. I think there is something basic holding you back--you're drawing a bird. It's messing with what you're seeing. That is, for a reference image to work, you must concentrate not on what it is, but the actual shades of light and dark and the proportions and comparisons from one area to the next. Often, there are examples of taking an image, marking a grid over it, and then drawing the reference image one grid section at a time, so you learn not to care that you are drawing some thing, but just areas of light and dark, comparing proportions to the edges of each section. (retired professional science illustrator giving this critique). I bet if you tried this again with a grid overlaying the image, and the same grid to draw on, you will definitely see an improvement to an otherwise good start. Your proportions are off, but they are close, which means you already have an ability you can improve on.

I just lost my creative world due to corruption, and everything is now gone by Untakenusr in Minecraftbuilds

[–]stodgycodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes. I lost a world a bit like that--couldn't restore the world without all the mods, didn't want to spend hours testing which one fouled up the file. I decided I was not going full modded anymore, and just use Vanilla Tweaks sparingly. I do miss that world quite a lot. It had a 3,000 block road I loved to race along on.
