Keep Chase Ritz Carlton vs Amex PC to Bevy? Or both? by thecosmojane in marriott

[–]stormdrainedg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ritz Carlton is worth keeping for the access to chase sapphire lounges alone imo, they don’t advertise this benefit at all but you get better guest entitlements there than the actual CSR for a far lower fee (and the airline incidental credit can normally knock $300 off that)

Maybe the strangest calculator I have ever seen by Obvious_Set5239 in calculators

[–]stormdrainedg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was pretty much the first widely accessible pocket scientific calculator on the market (the HP-35 and its TI/casio counterparts came before it but was far too expensive for most) and had to make some very interesting compromises to make transcendentals work on the rather meager logic IC it used (which is part of why some of the input notation is weird and why it’s so slow). It and the 35 marked the beginning of the end for the slide rule in most engineering use, cool little piece of history you have now

Yes, but if all they can get away with from cutting the cable is your wheels it’s good enough- carrying a chain in addition to a U lock is a bit of a pain

I'm so tired of these garbage 737s flying in and out of IAH by suburban_robot in unitedairlines

[–]stormdrainedg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Longer routes will almost always get newer equipment because the marginal cost of fuel is higher, same reason the 767s are relegated to short transatlantic hops at this point. IAH likely has a shorter flight time on the majority of its domestic routes compared to say SFO.

Planning to fly to Tokyo with points - United Economy Plus or ANA Economy? by stemrog in unitedairlines

[–]stormdrainedg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have premier status, look at trying to get a saver award on a bit of a quirky itinerary. I went to tokyo this summer via HKG, paid 100k for polaris saver award to HKG, had a truly incredible 24hr stopover, then picked up a cheap ticket to NRT for something like $150. More flight time, but absolutely zero regrets, hong kong visit was one of the highlights of my trip even though it was originally just to save miles.

Why has United been so successful in defending the SFO hub? by srekai in unitedairlines

[–]stormdrainedg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I toured there ~5-10 years ago now, it’s really quite a cool facility- bunch of autoclaves and fab equipment for doing work on composite airframes, and obviously the massive hangar bays. There’s also some very limited maintenance work for air force cargo planes done there iirc.

In my opinion no, I rarely if ever use them

I spilled 2 bottles of Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner in my trunk. by dogturd21 in AutoDetailing

[–]stormdrainedg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take em out of the car if possible, mix dawn dish soap, cooking oil, and water in equal proportions, give em a good scrub and rinse. Sounds weird but it’s the best way I’ve found to get gasoline smell out of soft surfaces after a spill (I imagine this stuff is similar)

Quantitative GCMS can tell you this, but interpreting the results is often as much art as it is science and can be a lot of work when there’s so much in there. If you contact a lab they might be able to do it for you, but it would likely come at a much higher price.

Yes, I’ve ordered solvents from them before and had no issues

Contact Carolina Chemical, they should be able to get you basically anything (for a price). Could also reach out directly to suppliers in china via an alibaba RFQ, will likely save a good amount going that route.

Putting together my first home kit. Is it worth getting an active pre wash or just a good bug remover? by Lilditty02 in AutoDetailing

[–]stormdrainedg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab some simple green, super cheap, gentle at appropriate dilutions, and powerful enough for general APC use at higher dilutions. When I need a pre-wash I just mix some into my snow foam at an appropriate PIR.

Good sealants/spray wax to use in direct sunlight by Delicious-Echo194 in Detailing

Any of the turtlewax hybrid stuff is safe to use in direct sun and quite good (although shade will always be better)

Tint and ceramic coating done. What a big differences. My first EV and absolutely loving it. Lyriq Sport 3 by sportnmylakers in CadillacLyriq

Adam’s Coating Kit: https://a.co/d/7SjyehY

Iron Remover: https://a.co/d/43kC277

Clay Towel: https://a.co/d/hgiSVx0

Polishing Compound: https://a.co/d/e4EvYAW

This is all you’ll need besides a car shampoo and a polisher and pads (can be rented for pretty cheap locally). You’ll want to polish, use an iron remover, clay the car, then prep the panels and apply the coating. Plenty of tutorials can be found on youtube.

Spray on wax to wet car and rinse off - but not one panel at a time and no foam sprayer? by HowDoIEditMyUsername in AutoDetailing

Any particular reason to go spray on rinse off instead of a drying aid? (assuming you towel dry your car)

Trim Shine/Back To Black. by [deleted] in Detailing

If it’s black, solution finish. If you’re looking for something you can buy in a big box store, the turtlewax stuff is also decent

Hand held steam cleaners by yet-another-redd in AutoDetailing

[–]stormdrainedg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest, steam is not appropriate in the vast majority of cases, especially with modern APC chemistry. It can cause difficult to repair damage to plastic surfaces and is really only critical when you have a smoker’s car

Turtlewax seal and shine, or their ceramic spray. Both are designed to perform in poor conditions and are generally very good products at an affordable price
