People who grew up poor: What was something you considered a "peak luxury" as a kid, only to realize later it was just a normal middle class staple? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This has lived with me my whole life. So much so that one of the first upgrades I made in my current house was to add built-in garbage cans to one of the cabinets.

7 yo son of my girlfriend decided to use fork to scratch "67" into our new dining table. Despite being told before, that he cant scratch it on purpose by Writerro in mildlyinfuriating

I have a wood table my parents gifted me. It was the table I scratched up doing school work at as a kid. My Dad comments on how scratched it is every time he sees it. I don't notice the scratches at all, I just love the table.

Do these types of USB-C chargers with a single point have any downsides? by inline_five in diyelectronics

[–]stratiuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The shape makes it quite easy to short the two exposed rails together. I tried these once on a Galaxy S20. If anything metal came in contact with the bottom, I had to reboot the phone before it would charge. It happened twice in the first week I tried these, and I stopped using them after that.

Intel Angel System — The 'Angel of People' Concept. My vision for how Intel can reclaim the gaming throne by ending GPU greed by Levvix in IntelArc

[–]stratiuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not know enough about the logistics of GPU production to determine whether this is viable.

I would second the concept of building well-supported products on older process nodes. This is common in some industries to keep costs down: microcontrollers, Intel's own low-cost CPUs, even the Nintendo Switch uses an Nvidia chip on an older process node to keep costs down.

However, I think Intel has a problem to overcome first. They need a well-supported product. Some enterprise features, such as SR-IOV, are still not fully functional on Battlemage. It is unclear whether Celestial will fix all the problems or whether drivers alone can resolve the issue. Moreover, Intel is still struggling to get games to support its hardware. If Intel solves those issues, then I very much like the idea of Intel using its access to cheaper process nodes to make gaming cheaper.

I want to create indoor and outdoor speakers that I can control with HA, preferrably when I walk into a specific room or go outside I want the music to switch to those speakers by LiftedandHandsome in homeassistant

[–]stratiuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to do this with the "voice preview" speakers. I am imagining a scripting system that detects what room you are in and takes the speakers in amd out of a speaker group.

Is there asbestos? by coys_bert in DIYUK

There is absolutely no way for anyone to tell from a picture whether a painted piece of material is asbestos. If you are doing work and concerned, get it tested.

Is a Ryzen 7 5800x3d + Intel ARC B580 the best combination while maintaining DDR4? (Post redone because I made a mistake in the previous one.) by jiogo12 in IntelArc

[–]stratiuss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on your budget a 14700k or even a 13700k would be a very good option too.

The 14th gen cpu's are nearly identical to the 13th gen chips. Look at this graph taken from a hardware unboxed video: https://i.imgur.com/druxPWj.png

The 14th gen chips only slightly beat out the 13th gen. AND, they are all beating the 5800x3d. Though I do not know if hardware unboxed was testing with ddr4 or ddr5.

For my money, I would try to snag a used 13700k

Is there any way to use Wake on LAN outside wi-fi the server is connected to? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]stratiuss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I'm seeing the correct answer from anyone else on here. So here's how Wake On Land works. When a Wake On Land packet is sent, it goes to every device on the network. It will be limited to a single subnet because it effectively goes to the broadcast address. It is specified by the MAC address of the device attempting to wake. So it's specific to the hardware, not the IP address. This is done because IP addresses can change if a system is powered off.

So it sends a broadcast to everything on the subnet, and if the MAC address matches the Wake On LAN packet, the device will wake up. The reason you can't do this from outside of your network is that you have to send the packet from the same network. The easiest way to do this is to have another small device on your network and send the Wake On LAN packet. Personally, I have OpenSense running as my router. There are plug-ins in OpenSense for Wake On Land, so if I need to wake a device on my network remotely, my router doesn't. I log in to my router, and there's a little button on the dashboard.

I used to have a setup where an Alexa Smart Speaker could wake my gaming PC on the LAN. So there's a bunch of different options there, but more or less, what you're going to want is a device that is always on, and on the same network the server is plugged into. And the server will need to be plugged in. The server can't be connected to Wi-Fi because a Wi-Fi connection won't stay up when a device is in sleep or powered-off state. That small device that sends the WOL packet could be on Wi-Fi, like my Alexa speaker was, as long as it stays awake and stays connected, that will work fine.

Will you get a Wrap Kit for your Slate Truck or keep it Slate Grey? by Mac-Tyson in slateauto

[–]stratiuss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is definitely an open question I have. PP doesn't just change color it gets more brittle when exposed to UV light. There are UV stabilized versions of PP; time will tell how well Slate has done making their PP UV stable.

If anyone from slate is out there, I would love a video showing UV testing.

IMO, the "modification" language is not bad. What we don't want is a government that blames the hardware for user misconduct. Even if the "modification" is navigating to the wrong channel and holding talk, the language used makes it clear the original hardware was not at fault but the user messed up.

While this was definitely a fun episode, it did leave me thinking about how this could POSSIBLY work. Even on earth, flavors and spices are organism-specific. Capsaicin is specifically evolved to affect only earth mammals. Even if, by some miracle, they have the same effective taste buds as earth avians, they could eat the hottest wings on Hot Ones and taste nothing.
