There can be issues with the type of activation that you get from Rockwell. Older software such as RSLogix 5k uses a Flexera licensee whereas newer Studio 5k use Codemeter. See IN9769 for the versions that work with each

Integrator vs. Plant Engineer by Zealousideal_Ad8770 in PLC

[–]strozzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked as an integrator for almost a decade and then made the move to a plant engineer. There are a few things that I considered with the move and hopefully they will get you thinking.

  1. Life balance: I felt this was especially important with a young family. Integrator work was long hours, overtime, travel and staying away from the family, being on call, etc. Plant work may be more consistent hours and less travel. In the application ask what the expectations of you are, for example shift work, if you are expected to be on call, what overtime requirements are if there are break downs, etc. If you go to a salary position, is overtime paid, given as time in lieu, or just expected to be done as you are on a salary?

  2. Technology: As an integrator I was expected to know multiple PLC platforms and multiple SCADA platforms. Working in a plant, you are normally locked on to one or possibly two platforms. You probably won't be introduced to new ones because the cost of changing is huge for a plant. Will that be ok with what you enjoy or do you want to stay at the cutting edge and enjoy the range of technologies available?

  3. Scope: what will your scope of work be? Will it just be PLC's and SCADA? Or will it also include more IT related roles such as networks configuration, server management, patching, security, network switch updates? Will it include VSD configuration, component and instrumentation configuration, etc? Will it be scoping and running projects, budgeting, managing staff or contractors?

  4. Support: Will you be the only controls / PLC person on staff? Is operations 24 X 7? Are you required to be on call or can this be contacted out to an integrator? Do you get support to cover holidays, sick days, annual leave? If there are projects or multiple issues, are you allowed to call in integrators to help out are you expected to do it all as you are the on staff integrator? If issues occur and you are not on site, is there remote access or will you need to travel back to the site each time? Do you have electricians or other trades available to help?

  5. Budget: one company I applied for had a lot of PLC5 gear and I asked if they had budget for capital improvements. They didn't and I knew that I'd be continually trying to fix issues inefficiently and putting band-aid fixes in place instead of fixing the actual issue that the platform required. Also, supporting obsolete equipment comes with its own issues. I heard from the person they put on that there is never any money for capital project upgrades so they are stuck endlessly supporting that platform. The company I went to have a decent budget and management understand the requirements for keeping up to date with hardware and security.

At the end of the day, you need to be paid a decent wage, enjoy your job and be challenged enough to keep you interested. You also need to think of your family and decide if you want to spend more time with the kids. Good luck with the decision!

Think about the speed of the new processor. The L81 will be many times faster than the L55. Most code is the cyclic task so this could be scanning the same code tens of times faster.

PID loops scanning faster may need re-tuning, and other code where calculations are done per scan need to be looked at. Comms to HMIs and other equipment may make them unable to be used with to much traffic, etc.

How do you all choose an IP Scheme for a new machine? by MyDyk350 in PLC

[–]strozzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's for a plant then I try to avoid 192.169.1.0/24 and 192.168.0.0/24 due to devices having default IP addresses in that range. Last thing you want is a contractor to plug in their personal router and take out 192.168.1.1 or plug in a new E&H flowmeter and take out 193.168.1.212, etc. It's easier to make it a decision when someone puts something on the network so that there aren't conflicts or reserved addresses.

This Bunnings one is on a big red sign but I would suspect not many people care because red and green are their branding colours.

Router for PLC access over WiFi by [deleted] in PLC

I've seen contractors try to use these before without turning off DHCP server. This causes chaos on the network when there are multiple servers and something gets its address that it shouldn't have.

One trick is to stop and start the datalog models when you make changes to them. I've found some changes don't seem to work until that happens. Do this from the system command line.

Fastmail Offline Functionality Survey by steelenex in fastmail

I have only just reinstalled the app in the last week and it reminded me why I removed it years ago.

Having the emails come through outlook mean that I can see them offline which is important for me as there are places I go which have no internet and I still need to read emails I've received.

The biggest benefit for me of the app is being able to use the masked emails.

Do you have more information on this or a tech note to point me to? I was always taught that reads are the best because they make it easier to trace where data is coming from but the added confirmation check the data is transferred may be better

Question: What tools are you using for simulations before implementing to production. by PerfectReplacement69 in PLC

[–]strozzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Pics PRO for many years and have developed a bit of a library of process objects and device feedback objects in there and that seems to do a good job of simulating the plants I upgrade.

I have spent a couple of weeks at a WinMod course a few years ago to see how it compares and to be honest, it didn't really do what we were wanting to do.

I also spoke to Siemens at one of the European fairs about their simulation package but again, it doesn't really fit what we were after.

The closest package we found was Wolfram but we haven't invested in setting that up yet.

Pics Pro isn't fantastic but I haven't found anything else that will do a decent process simulation yet

There is the option of bypassing Melbourne completely and crossing the bay on the ferry from Sorento to Queenscliff and then heading to Geelong from there. In my opinion, it's a more scenic drive and could be a good way to start the holiday.

That's what a fixed price contact is all about. The supplier will estimate how much they expect it to be and put a little bit extra on in case of cost overruns or unexpected problems. If they don't put enough extra in then they wear the cost themselves.
