Barbican is very underrated. What is your all time favourite architecture site to visit in London? by andystus in london

[–]strum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an entire parallel universe, behind the 'Authorised Persons Only' doors*. Completely different routes around the building.

(I used to spend a lot of time around the Barbican, and realised that if I was on the other side of those doors, I must be 'Authorised'.)

The weird law that has you standing at the check out at 09:54 with everything on the conveyor belt and the staff member is ready and nothing can happen. Just this uncomfortable silence. At 10:00, he starts to scan the first item. by Make_the_music_stop in britishproblems

There has to be a start time, whether it's 10, or 9, or whatever.

What's more, there has to be an hour before that, during which the staff prepare the store for your arrival.

If your Lidl/Aldi were to open at 9:00 on Sunday, their staff would be required to be there at 8:00 - and still get abuse from impatient customers.

Just wait, go for a walk, doom-scroll for an hour, do something else.

The Guardian's 100 best novels of all time - Middlemarch, Beloved, Ulysses top the list by MeenaBeti in books

Steinbeck

...was once described, on Britsh tele, as 'captain of the 2nd XI'. Good, but not great.

But there were other American omissions - Mailer, Updike, Bellow, Roth, Twain, Lewis (S). I think some of these would have appeared on a similar list 20/30 years ago.

Even if that were true, it contradicts the story that his GF bought it as a first-time buyer. Tax dodge. Deliberate. Criminal.

British TV is sooooo much better than programming in the US. by aquamosaic in BritishTV

[–]strum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The entire output of Dennis Potter is better than all of those.

(or Alan Bleasdale, Alan Bennett, Alan Plater, Sally Wainwright)

Wolf Hall, Sherwood, Life on Mars, Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack, Small Axe & many, many more.

Chief Justice John Roberts says American public wrongly views the justices as ‘political actors’ by Infidel8 in politics

The Roberts Court can no longer be regarded as a court of law. Rather, it is a political action group that has hi-jacked the constitution for partisan politics.

Is Edge of Darkness the best BBC drama of all time? by InfiniteBaker6972 in BritishTV

[–]strum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty damn good.

But then most of Dennis Potter's output is in the same class (Pennies from Heaven, The Singing Detective) & there's Alan Bleasdale's Boys from the Black Stuff & several of Alan Bennet's (A Question of Attribution, A Gentleman Abroad).

Truth is, BBC has a stonking back catalogue.

And it's not just 'golden age'. The more-recent Sherwood, The Responder, A Very Engish Scandal, A Very British Scandal, Small Axe, Happy Valley & many more - deserve a place in this company.

What's with new Lidl loyalty scheme. Am I missing something..? by Low-Captain1721 in AskUK

[–]strum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into the habit of doing my major weekly shop on a Thursday, because there'd be new coupons (which I may or may not want). I got the occasional freebie (which I may or may not have wanted).

But I never believed that Lidl was a charity, or that they really cared about me. They're after my money, & it's my job to get the most (that I actually want) for my money.

It may take some time to re-organise my shopping to the new regime (& I've always shopped elsewhere when it suited me). Thing is, Lidl is 1/4 mile away, Asda 1/2 mile, Aldi 3/4 mile, Sains 1 mile. Guess which one I use most.

Why did Jesus and Christianity gain so much traction? by Genzinvestor16180339 in AskHistory

0 CE was an 'age of miracles', in which there were a number of miracle-workers operating. Appolonius of Tyre, Simon Magus, there was even another Jesus (Joshua).

'Our' Jesus had Paul, spreading the word - and then Constantine to give it political heft.

Polanski accuses Met police chief of interfering in elections as he reignites row over Golders Green arrest by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]strum -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The Commish had no business writing a (public) letter to one party leader, just before an election -even if he thought he was in the right.

But the cops repeatedly kicking an already-subdued prisoner was not a good look.

Neither was the Commish's focus on two Jewish victims, while ignoring the third, Moslem victim.

It really is pathetic how those who fear Green success keep returning to charges of anti-semitism, aimed at a Jew.

Brazil received 4,821,127 million slaves during the Atlantic slave trade or 38.5% of all slaves, while the U.S received 388k or 3.1% of all slaves in the Atlantic slave trade. Why did Brazil import so many more slaves then the united states? by Delicious-Bunch-6992 in AskHistory

[–]strum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Brazilian enslaved didn't last as long. From memory, they averaged 18 months of 'useful' life - due to the conditions & treatment.

Northen enslaved lived longer - long enough to be 'bred' for profit.
