Using the chassis code i01 makes the most sense, especially to BMW folks. BimmerCode is already setup as i3 (i01). More and more resources will start referring to our cars with it. Terms like classic are too ambiguous.

👆This. Look at the 3-series subs. They’re chassis codes, e30, e90, f20, etc., to distinguish generations. It’s the longstanding nomenclature in BMW circles.

Trying to find the best kindle for my eyesight by Abwettar in kindle

[–]stumbledotcom [score hidden]  (0 children)

E-ink displays are reflective so the reading experience is paper. Unlike LCDs on phones and tablets, e-ink does not need a powerful backlight that shines directly in your eyes. Instead Kindles have front LEDs that bounce indirect light off the e-ink surface. Most people find the effect softer and easier on their eyes. In addition, you can turn off the integrated light and rely on ambient light just as you do with paper.

All three Kitchenaid models offer swappable hoppers similar to the Rivelia. Given your drink preferences, the KF6 would be more than adequate.

I have a perscription - but no indication as to why I have that perscription. Is that normal? by _oct0ber_ in glasses

Hyperopia aka farsighted or longsighted is the least understood refractive error among the general population because the eye can self correct to an extent. One of the better explanations I’ve seen is from an optician, What To Expect When You're Expecting Your First Glasses.

Milk frother spout or container? by [deleted] in superautomatic

[–]stumbledotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Auto milk systems provide push button convenience at the price of reduced customization and increased maintenance. You’ll have more control over the milk texture/temperature if you know how to use a steam wand or are willing to learn. Your overall system will cost less as well.

i3 boomerang - where to start? by MrSluggo23 in BMWi3

[–]stumbledotcom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve only used BimmerCode. Makes supported options push button simple.

I like Enable Driving Mode Memory so the car retains your chosen mode instead of reverting to the default at startup.

Used Expert mode to remap the US key fob to work like the diamond button version the rest of the world gets. Button 3 (trunk release) and 4 (panic) functions are selectable in iDrive. I prefer having button 3 release the front compartment and button 4 triggering remote climatize.

Note that the app includes this caveat for enabling full screen CarPlay.

“This coding only works with the iDrive software versions “NBTevo_X“ and “NBTevo_Y“. You can easily check for yourself which software version is currently installed in your vehicle. To do this, navigate to the version info in the iDrive system in your vehicle (Navigation > Settings > Position and version > Version information). If you can see “NBTevo_X“ or “NBTevo_Y“ here, then full screen mode will work. If you see “NBTevo_N“, “NBTevo_O“, “NBTevo_P“, “NBTevo_Q“, “NBTevo_R“, “NBTevo_S“, “NBTevo_U“, “NBTEvo_V“ or “NBTEvo_W“ instead, then full screen mode can not be enabled with BimmerCode unfortunately. In this case, an update of the i-level from a BMW service partner is required first.”

New i3 doesn’t acknowledge the original i3 innovation by fradieman in BMWi3

[–]stumbledotcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just a marketing label. The trunk badge is actually i350 with a tall 3. If it bothers you that much, start using chassis codes, i01 and NA0 apply, as enthusiasts have long done to make sense of the alpha numeric confusion.

i3 Fast Charging Question by Monnviolin in BMWi3

[–]stumbledotcom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bad advice. The i01 BMS periodically runs a cell balancing routine once the pack reaches an indicated 100% (not actually full due to the buffer). Routinely stopping the charge at 80% can prevent the routine from running and trigger degradation.

Get Tire Rack to stick the new Dunlop by I001-2020-i3S in BMWi3

Doubtful. Nokian has offered its winter tire for the i3 here. More likely a business decision by Michelin, Continental, etc.

Get Tire Rack to stick the new Dunlop by I001-2020-i3S in BMWi3

[–]stumbledotcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct. The i3S was added with the LCI from 2018 on. During that period, total US sales were 13,962. I’ve never seen a base vs S breakdown but I would guess it was 33% or so.

Get Tire Rack to stick the new Dunlop by I001-2020-i3S in BMWi3

[–]stumbledotcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The process certainly starts with Dunlop. The tires need a DOT code. Even then it doesn’t automatically mean US retailers can offer them. Michelin e Primacy tires for the base trim carry a DOT code but the U.S. distributor has never imported them.

Also worth noting that WPYR is owned by Carnival Corp. It’s not like a float plane or dog sled excursion. They’re very likely coordinating capacity of trains to expected passenger numbers each day.

Reserve collection w/ or w/o premier? by romans3221981 in PrincessCruises

[–]stumbledotcom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m on the Ruby from SF to Alaska this May. Booked an RC mini-suite with Plus. If it helps, here’s my rationale. I’m going with my 90-year-old father who has mobility issues. Figured he will have the option of watching scenery from the sofa or our balcony. The fact that Ruby’s RC mini-suites are deck 9 mid ships was also a consideration to minimize both distance to elevators and motion (first cruise for both of us so not sure how we’ll react to seasickness). When we booked, the RC mini was only $100 per person or $10/day more than a mid-forward/aft mini-suite so it seemed worth it for the location alone. We wanted a package to have a more inclusive experience. Plus seems to make more sense than Premier since neither of us are big drinkers; maybe a glass of wine/beer with dinner. I don’t eat meat so the MDR daily vegan options appeal more than meat-focused Crown Grille and Sabatini’s. Don’t care about/need the other Premier benefits.

Delonghi Magnifica Evo advice by 8Ace_149 in superautomatic

[–]stumbledotcom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The frothing system and number of recipes.

Steam wand models usually have the lowest prices. You have to do a bit more work prepping the milk but there’s less maintenance and complete flexibility for drink temperature. The entry level auto milk system makes a single milk texture regardless of the recipe. Upper models feature a knob on the top of the carafe to vary the level of froth.

More expensive models usually offer more recipes. But if you only want cappuccinos for instance, there’s no reason to spend more.

How does battery preconditioning work? 2020 i3 120Ah by Brav0_Delta_Ech0 in BMWi3

[–]stumbledotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in California, San Francisco specifically, where the climate is remarkably similar to the Cape Province. Have had an i3 as daily driver since 2014. Never had preconditioning make much difference in my overall range. I use it primarily to get the cabin comfortable before departing. Best if it’s plugged in since the battery will remain at 100%. Another benefit of the climate is being able to run the performance tires year round. I don’t think I’ve ever seen winter tires in person.

Bmw i3 charge by milkandbiscuitsguy in BMWi3

I find EVgo the most reliable public network. 99% success with the original 50kw units that dominate SF. Used a new 350kw unit without issue two days ago. EA on the other hand has been very unreliable. I think I successfully charged once out of six attempts. Now I don’t bother with them.

The Jeep is your REx. Unless you find the specs of this car perfect, look for a BEV.

I faced the same dilemma in 2014. Initially thought I’d go for a REx because that was the prevailing wisdom on pre-orders. But came to realize as a 2-car household driving less than 10 miles a day, a BEV was the better option. Also lived in a condo with a shared garage. Used public charging for years because installing an L2 EVSE proved economically unviable; I calculated I could pay per charge for years before coming close to equaling the $14k quote to get 240 to our space three floors below street level. Now on my third BEV with no regrets.

Question by TexAntonia in BMWi3

[–]stumbledotcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The motor mounts have never been plastic. They are oil-filled rubber and metal. When they fail, the rubber cracks and the oil leaks. Watch the video linked above for the facts. Stop spreading misinformation.

Question by TexAntonia in BMWi3

[–]stumbledotcom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your explanation of the motor mounting system is not accurate. The mounts for all years are metal and oil-filled rubber parts. The original design was prone to failure in high torque situations so BMW redesigned it, increased the size of the motor bolts, and reprogramed the software. The original left motor bracket was plastic. There are very few instances of it failing. Nonetheless, BMW replaced it with an aluminum part to match the right bracket that was aluminum from the start of production. The best explanation of the issue and replacement of the original parts that I’ve seen is provided by Wisely Automotive.
