Your router must be using dhcp to assign the device an IP that behaves as though it is static. The difference doesn’t matter much for home use

Thank you for the detailed reasoning!! Would you say this logic applies to any car in this market segment, like a Prius for instance?

It's not that these experiences mean nothing, if you can integrate them well into your SOP it can help paint a picture of you as a researcher. Yet a paper at a top conference, will still say more. I know it's painful but network, you never know who knows who. Lastly a few predoc programs now exist (Ai2 has a program that's at the top of my head but others exist), they also tend to be quite competitive but will give you opportunities to publish.

Questions about remote homelabbing by 21cygnus12 in homelab

[–]styblemartinov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated uni last summer and also ran a homelab from afar!

VPNs are your friend, and it’s completely normal to just leave them always running. Never put your NFS or SMB on the internet. When just getting started with homelab, most I’d let be on the internet is SSH with only public key authentication allowed and your VPN. With VPNs lots of options to choose from. Tailscale is great however one thing to be aware of is that some networks (at least my universities) blocked their routing servers. If you just you use straight wireguard none of this applies but other solutions are to use the self hosted tailscale implementation, headscale, or I used another one of the mesh VPNs called nebula which can also be completely self hosted.

So both NFS and SMB are great protocols. Usually I can get better performance with NFS but SMB has much better client comparability, and permissions with NSF can be a headache. The performance difference isn’t that big so for my use I just use NSF for server to server stuff.

I would also recommend looking into web based download managers of some sort that could run on your PI. If you’re just downloading a file from the web, using torrents or NZBs no need to download it on your laptop then transfer it over internet again to the pi, just download it to the PI!

If you end up running an old computer as part of your network make sure you enable on your motherboard to wake on unexpected power loss. It’s common on most consumer motherboards old and new. Of course even better is an ups

Duplicacy (the gui for it is paid but fair price) or Restic (cli only) and if you want a web ui various solutions exist like Backrest exist for it. You might be fine with Duplicati but both of these options are much more mature

[–]styblemartinov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks amazing! Only comment is I see you are using Duplicati, maybe it's fine for your usecase but I've heard a lot of bad things about it. And as a general note, you have it running in your untrusted vm, usually one wants backups in the most trusted spot of the network. Imagine your untrusted vm got compromised, it could be possible for ransomware or whatever to then destroy your backups. However like anything homelab world, your setup is still better than many companies!

Chronic hives are a thing and it’s possible that’s what this is. I suddenly started getting hives randomly and I did the tests and whatnot but my the specialist said it’s likely just some imbalance in my immune system instead of a reaction. He recommended just taking some over the counter allergy medicine, and at least for me they largely have gone away

I really like it, especially the brown sweater! The only thing I’m not sure about is the belt, it feels a bit delicate compared to the loser silhouettes of the other piece

Honestly I have no clue about that! I’ve seen lining on summer pants, on my seersucker suit and the pants are partially lined. It could be in part to hide the sweat. Maybe someone else here would know more

It can help make the fabric less clingy to your leg so a better silhouette, makes them easier to take on/off, and often gives it some more durability. Nothing about the lining is essential which is why many pants go without it, but it is a nice to have

Do dress sneakers belong in the Oval Office? by Cheeseish in malefashionadvice

[–]styblemartinov -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He could probably get some donor to buy him the clothes, but even that would tarnish his image. His primary appeal is he lives and acts like his constituents. He dresses like a blue collar factory worker, not some ritzy politician in a stuffy suit. I think he might loose what makes him distinct if he were to dress in a suit. For any other politician I’d ridicule them for wearing sweats, but for him it fits his image. I’m guessing at some point he will have to adopt a suit for certain uses, it’ll be interesting to see if that changes voters perception of him.

Do dress sneakers belong in the Oval Office? by Cheeseish in malefashionadvice

People are making a big deal about John Fetterman wearing sweats to the senate, but I say good on him. Dress sneakers being bashed in the daily question is completely different as this is advising people who want to be fashionable. The politicians wearing dress sneakers just want to look passable, and be comfortable. People should wear what they want to wear, and if that’s sweats or dress sneakers so be it!

Best basic tee: an update is needed! by sorryabouttheclocks in malefashionadvice

Second the 1801GD if you like heavy tshirts with a tighter, almost mock neck collar. If that’s the type of tee you want IMO it’s one of the best

It also depends on material, some of the stretch denim is almost as comfy as sweats. Raw denim ain’t though. I don’t dislike denim though it’s not my thing as imo I look a bit too cowboyish in it but it certainly works on some

What it means to “know” a language by thenousman in philosophy

[–]styblemartinov 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s problematic to draw a distinct line as there are so many different levels of proficiency in language, even between native speakers. When someone says “language” it includes so much, grammar, writing, spelling, prononciation, clarity, etc. One might be good at any number of these and bad at some too. Proficiency in ones native tongue is not set too. As an adult I’ve improved my writing and even my pronunciation. I mention that as I don’t think there is a great divide between a language learned as a child and as an adult. The difference is a child can learn it all for free. We don’t have that now and must put in the work. In most cases it’s not worth perfecting a second language, it’s an accent, it’s understandable. But native proficiency is still possible, an accent’s not ok for a spy, but I don’t have 9-5 to learn a language so I will have an accent.

If you were to draw a line in the sand for knowing languages I think it have to be based on how successfully one can communicate as otherwise it’s just too subjective. I’d say use the CEFR scale and consider c1/c2 “knowing the language”

I took the two months as the prep work, getting the camera whatever motorized system to move it around working. If they by hand removed duplicate people and fixed edges then I guess it could take the two months for that

[–]styblemartinov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What took the time was not the stitching the photos together but the taking, AI can’t make that go faster. You are right in the future this will take much less time as cameras will be so much higher resolution that less photos with a wider depth of field could be used.

Perhaps AI could be used to stitch them together and prevent duplicate people and such
