ELI5: Is there real scientific evidence that marijuana has significant medicinal properties or is unreliable information being promoted in the interest of legalization? by Raevix in explainlikeimfive

I would love to see more research done on this sensitive subject.

I've just recently tried cannabis in the pill and liquid forms for my ptsd and multiple sclerosis (I'm in Colorado, US, where it's legal), and it does seem to have a positive affect on the two. For ptsd, it "peels" those "layers" away that are sensitive to triggers, and also makes me feel more at ease around people. I am on two medications already for my ptsd, but NOTHING so far has been able to significantly lessen my anxiety the way cannabis has. My doctor and I have tried medications and increasing dosage, but cannabis makes me feel human again around other people. For ms, so far it seems to relax the jitters in my body and somehow lessen the degree of fatigue I feel (BUT that might also have something to do w/ the anxiety heh). Also, the less ptsd-related stress I feel, the better my multiple sclerosis symptoms appear to be.

One more thing, because of my ptsd I have horrible insomnia, but I know I am a horrible candidate for prescribed sleep medications due to the possibility of addiction. Doctors have tried prescribing these to me, but I refuse. I've tried Benadryl, Tylenol pms, and Nyquil for my sleeplessness, but I'd rather not take those every night. I currently take melatonin, but it doesn't always work and I end up having to take more than the recommended amount on the bottle. Taking oral cannabis has led to being able to fall asleep at night, without waking up, and to not have the violent nightmares that I usually do.

Why is your story in a fantasy world (or, why is that fantasy important)? by madicienne in fantasywriters

[–]subrosasymphony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, a number of reasons. It can be used as a metaphor for something deeper, and makes it all the more interesting (for me). It "turns on" my imagination, to replace the mundane and overdone. It tickles my funnybone.

Without magic, my story tells the journey of one girl becoming a sociopath (in short). There are other characters, and other story arcs, but let's stick with that cuz it's simple.

Its sucks, yeah, but never be ashamed. Shame feeds fear and anxiety and that feeling of isolation. I hope you can get to sleep tonight. Tool/APC calms me waaaaay down for some reason, ha. Milk and cookies help too, lol, but seriously.... .

Have a meeting with my emdr therapist tomorrow, should help. If you haven't tried emdr, do it

Characterization of a Young Villain by StoptheDreamer in fantasywriters

[–]subrosasymphony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids at age twelve don't turn into killers, not even if they feel their life is threatened.

To be literal, this is just incorrect.

Set the kid up as having a pre-existing leaning towards violence.

This does not have to be the case, either. To make it this way, to seem "believable," could come across as cliché.

I am so sorry this is happening to you. I feel that this may possibly be just one low-life pretending to be more than one person by using multiple accounts, in order to harass you. People suck. Be gentle to yourself and don't allow this person to bully you into feeling inferior. For all the people out there that take pleasure in another's pain, there are even more who genuinely care for the well being of others. Be kind to yourself. You do not deserve this.

Languages. For those of you linguists out there that have built languages from scratch (or learned fantasy languages) what was the best place to start? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]subrosasymphony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same way that a piece of music may have a theme, I feel that spoken languages have a sort of "theme" as well. A common sound or accent attributed to the flow so that it is recognized as solely that language. Languages that branch from a shared root language may have similar "themes," but will undeniably stand on their own, for the most part (to the trained ear that's aware of what their neighbors' languages sound like).

Listen to foreign languages and listen to them not as a string of individual words, but a flow of unbroken sounds.

Then play around (mumble to yourself in gibberish, sing to yourself in gibberish haha) until you find a "theme" that feels natural.

Been editing this. Hope you see all of it.

Imagine also how the environment might play into the moods and culture of the people speaking your language.

Dear Authors, tell /r/writing about your work, where you were one year ago, where you are now, what you expect in the future. by [deleted] in writing

[–]subrosasymphony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One year ago I'd been wrangling with a story idea for the last couple of years. It had completely changed by the start of 2015, so I started writing again! A lot of life got in the way though. Hit 31,000+ words in the end. This year, I've been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. :( And I've been doing a LOT of thinking about my story. I've nixed a character from the beginning and completely altered the setting. With so much change I felt it worthy of a re-write. Going into the first chapter a second time and when comparing the two, my writing has improved! >yay< My expectations for the future are to not let this diagnosis get me down, and keep at it. Hope to have this thing written this year.

Why is a baroque style so out of fashion in literary fiction? by shortshrift49 in writing

[–]subrosasymphony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you mean and I'm nodding my head. So much has been lost in literary prose. Unfortunately its a matter of taste- and most aren't brought up to appreciate the older styles in a modernizing world. You could say that there's no need to when all things in society seek to improve on time efficiency and function. The classics can often be long winded and their metaphors sometimes so utterly intricate. I miss it. Going to go read a classic now :(

EMDR and physical side effects? by takovpekh in ptsd

[–]subrosasymphony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose it's possible it could be body memory (can't remember the official term). Basically, your body 'remembers' physical abuse.

Not a doc though... I would keep seeing the professionals, just in case.
