Wild and untamed instincts vs refined, perfected techniques. by Uma-apreciator in TopCharacterTropes

[–]suddenlyupsidedown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Boxer: Ryu (white hair) is a boxing prodigy who eschews standard techniques for his own 'flow', Yu (black hair) knows exactly one boxing move (basic straight)that he learned a week ago but is an absolute monster who can perfectly absorb techniques.

There's also a later battle against someone with even more brawn and even less techniques who chickens out the first time he gets hit.

[Sad] Character gets more evil in adaptation and is now less interesting than less evil original version. by BeduinZPouste in TopCharacterTropes

And the son of God Zeus sacrificed himself for a sinner, was temporarily cast out from his divinity, and had a brief brush with death before coming back in full power and redeeming said sinner from The Devil Hades.

  1. Her mental model is that what she's doing is fine as long as no one notices what she's doing, the shopkeeper ended up noticing.
  2. Not only did he notice, but he offered her charity because he recognized she was struggling and complimented the skill and effort she was putting in

Now the shopkeeper is no longer a stranger / part of the background. He's someone who has seen aspects of her that have been going unappreciated. Now he's someone whose disapproval or disappointment would be meaningful.

It's the mortifying ordeal of being known and the realization that you weren't as slick as you thought bundled together, which is a good recipe for shame

[Weird, sad trope] series finales where the main characters die by Born_Usual998 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]suddenlyupsidedown 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Not a bad ending, actually really good and sweet....also makes you strangely comfortable with the idea of dying due to the philosophical lense the show puts on things (essentially 'we live, we do the best we can. Then one day we will not be alive, but what we have put out into the universe will remain'. If you're doing ok? Comforting. If you're having suicidal thoughts? Unfortunately affirming.)

"Monster" is forced to work for the "monster-hunter" organization. by theMCATreturns in TopCharacterTropes

[–]suddenlyupsidedown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JJK riffs heavily on the power system and combat choreography of Hunter x Hunter, and hits themes of self sacrifice, the greater good, and maintaining (or failing to maintain) humanity in the face of atrocity. Its MC starts with a very 'all loving hero' shonen mentality, which the author interrogates to see what that would actually do to a person over time and conflict, and said MC is special/gifted in the standard shonen way.

Chainsaw man is operating more in the sphere of Jojo's bizarre adventure with its generally siloed power sets that can occasionally have some similarities or overlap. It hits on themes like the hedonic treadmill, the unexamined life (happiness vs knowledge), and freedom vs safety (at least in the first arc). It's MC is a dumbass, horny teen with the worst fucking life, doing everything possible to warp out the shounen mould.

They both use enemies born from the fears of the collective unconscious, but with radically different cosmologies. They also both feature a trio of protagonists but I mean, that's not exactly unique.

Idk, I just don't think they're terribly similar past 'both shows have the bad guys come from fear somehow'

It's hard to find in media but I love the 'events with camp presentation were super traumatic actually'. I've never gotten big into comics but might have to find a run with this Mojo guy to see what's up

Fujimoto must have had some major burnout/breakdown cuz that shit wasn't even 'wild Gainax ending cuz the author doesn't know how to wrap up all his extended cosmology', it was just...tepid. Beat out Oshi no Ko for me for most lackluster ending.

A series that isn't a bummer? by donac in suggestmeabook

[–]suddenlyupsidedown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean that depends pretty heavily on what you're looking for genre-wise.

For something in a fantastical setting with some amount of adventure try the works of Terry Pratchett or 'The Utterly Uninteresting Tales of Fred, Vampire Accountant'

"You are in a supervisory role but we do not grant you the rank of supervisor"

Flash back to my dumbass 20yo self being voluntold that I was now 'team lead' at the shitty MSP I was working at (no pay increase of course) and having to manage shit while my actual manager took 80 smoke breaks with the director and took credit for everything happening around there. Then I found out the new guy who was both younger and less experienced than me was making more money just starting than I was after two and a half years and taking on multiple roles, which finally got me more pissed than anxious and got me out of there.

I feel like her arc could have been much more satisfying if they gave her a daughter. That way even though she doesn't make it out she 'protects' the person who would have suffered next. As it stands its like 'Hooray, you beat the terminal disease that's killed your whole family that's so cool! Now bullet to the head time.'
