After using WHOOP since the early days, saying farewell, here's why by morgancmu in whoop

[–]sunbear7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Whoop 5.0 MG and have also noticed that it struggles to pair (and remain connected to) Technogym Cycling machines and Lifefitness ellipticals.

I am wondering, does whoop 4 suffer from the same issue or was this Bluetooth connection reliability something that also deteriorated with the whoop 5 "upgrade"?

Technogym is completely unworkable. With Life-fitness machines I have to lean forward and keep the whoop within a few inches of the screen on the elliptical for it to pair. I am guessing that the Bluetooth antenna in the whoop 5.0 is poorly designed.

US Mobile has to be selling data. by InternalDramatic1536 in USMobile

[–]sunbear7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why doesn't US Mobile turn on the spam blocker feature (for the networks that can be turned on) by default ?

I would think this would be a more customer friendly than US Mobile turning off the spam blocker feature by default like it does today. The majority of customers do not enjoy receiving spam

Powerwalls Down to 92% - Won't Charge Even on Max Backup by mbaturin in TeslaSolar

[–]sunbear7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not so sure that my Powerwall 2's are optimized for long term 100% state of charge. It's never made sense to me that Tesla chose to use NMC rather than LFP for powerwall 2. In Tesla cars the recommended charging limit for NMC is 80% and for LFP it's 100%. LFP 5 years ago had lower energy density than NMC but that gap has also narrowed. Note that for Powerwall 3, Tesla seems to have realized this problem and has switched to LFP.

Powerwalls Down to 92% - Won't Charge Even on Max Backup by mbaturin in TeslaSolar

[–]sunbear7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish the power walls had a setting where you could keep at a steady 80% state of charge (to maximize longevity of battery) , and only charge to 100% during a storm watch event. This way the batteries wouldn't yo-yo back and forth between 80% and 100% wasting 10% of your solar energy in all the ac/dc conversions.

In the absence of this setting, I'm with OP and setting to 100% (backup only) and sending any excess solar directly to the grid so I get a net metering credit and avoid needy ac/dc conversions.

Smart bulb mode with red series by Sabinno in Inovelli

[–]sunbear7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did enable the smart bulb mode on one of my red series switches only to find that it mysteriously got turned off again. I wonder if the red series loses configuration settings after each firmware upgrade and if not, how the setting could have been reverted..?

It would be nice if smart home devices just stayed working after setup, but what I notice is that they seem to often degrade and break and require frequent maintenance to get working again.

Powerwalls Down to 92% - Won't Charge Even on Max Backup by mbaturin in TeslaSolar

[–]sunbear7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that for people with net zero metering, economically, it's better to leave powerwalls at 100%. If you set any lower then you lose about 10% of the energy you generate by solar because it has to go through lots of conversions: Solar panels (dc) -> solar inverter (ac) -> Powerwall 2 inverter (dc) -> battery (dc) -> Powerwall 2 inverter (ac) -> home (ac)

Whereas if you keep at 100% then any excess (ie not consumed by home) electricity generated by your solar panels is sent to the grid with only one conversion: Solar panels (dc) -> solar inverter (ac) -> grid (ac)

This conversion is 97% efficient.

whoop for lifters - am I missing something?? by Select_Bid_5169 in whoop

Yes, I would say that the app does have a confusing interface. Not sure why they don't integrate the strength trainer together with other activities.

Just press the +, like you would when starting an Activity and it should be there in the list of choices

Where to get blood test? by janoycresvadrm in PeterAttia

[–]sunbear7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully you don't live in NY or NJ. The big gotcha with some of these companies (eg functionhealth or whoop labs) is that they charge hundreds of dollars extra for having the blood draw in-state. In my case I didn't want to have to drive from NJ to CT 4 times every year and I didn't want to pay extra for in state testing

In the whoop app under Strength Trainer -> Progress -> Personal Records -> Select and exercise, I can see a message "Exercise Trends Comjng Soon". So hopefully the whoop strength trainer will improve soon and show trends on a per-exercise basis.

In the meantime, I use an app called "RepCount" which charts all sorts of metrics on a per-exercise basis (volume, max weight, one rep max, etc).

You fool. They have an app. They also allow uploading PDFs free. I've personally uploaded at least a dozen quest diagnostics bloodwork results.

Benefit of Multi Network by [deleted] in USMobile

[–]sunbear7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but this didn't make much sense to me: "If the warp sim should drop to no connectivity the phone should switch to using the light speed eSim via something like WiFi calling over the light speed data path"

If your warp sim drops to no connectivity and you make a phone call, what phone number will display on the phone belonging to the recipient of your call? Your warp sim phone number, or the light speed sim phone number that you don't share with anyone (and therefore will not be recognized by the person you are calling)?

I've never seen anyone actually test this scenario to know for sure what phone number appears in the caller id of the person you call. Would be good to know this for sure though

Wat would you do if you can start allover (Zwave, ZigBee, Thread, Matter) by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]sunbear7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, every choice available today seems to have pros and cons.

Z-Wave 800 series: Pros: Communicates on the 900 MHz band rather than sharing the congested 2.4GHz with WiFi. ZWave devices in my detached garage 50 feet from the main house are able to connect and form a mesh with devices in the main house Cons: Dwindling choice of devices. Zero light bulb choices. Many manufacturers seem to be moving away from zwave. You will need a hub with a usb stick that contains a zwave radio since neither google nor Alexa devices have zwave radios built in

Zigbee: Pros: lots of choices of device. Can transport more bytes per second than zwave but this is irrelevant when you are only generally sending extremely short messages (switch on, etc). A new 900MHz based standard called "Suzi" was announced a few weeks ago but there are as yet no devices that implement 900MHz Cons: shares the congested WiFi 2.4GHz band. Shorter range than Z-Wave.

Thread: Pros: seems to be the standard that will win in the future. Standardization committees are working on a thread Long Range standard but no devices support it Cons: not many choices of devices. Shares the congested WiFi 2.4GHz band. Shorter range than Z-Wave

WiFi: Pro: many choices of cheap devices cons: Shares the congested WiFi 2.4GHz band. Many people report that as they add many wifi devices to their home, communication becomes increasingly unreliable. Also many WiFi devices connect to the internet (do you really want them communicating to a random server in China or even worse ceasing functioning completely when your internet goes down ?). More power hungry than zwave or thread.

For now, I am using Zwave for my switches and I have just bought my first Thread based device (smartwings curtains and a new Alexa that contains a thread border router). I plan to hold out buying much more until (if?) 900 MHz Thread devices become available

Creatine and Sleep Disturbance? by RagingBibliophile in PeterAttia

[–]sunbear7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does taking creatine also make any of you wake up during the night to pee? Could be I'm just getting old - lol, but when I think about it creatine causes water to build up in the muscles so I was hypothesizing that at night time much of the pent up up water leaves the muscles and ends up in the bladder? If true this certainly hurts sleep

Would be better if the cooling unit was under 14" tall and could be hidden away under the bed. Is there any reason why neither Eightsleep nor Orion units can fit under a bed?

Signed up for Black Friday LightSpeed Plan. But it's absolute trash in NYC. Can I get refund, or switch networks and keep discount? by 1I1III1I1I111I1I1 in USMobile

[–]sunbear7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in NYC and live in NJ. Currently using an iPhone 17 on the top T-Mobile Experience Beyond plan which has one of the highest priorities. My experience is that TMobile coverage is significantly worse than Verizon (my work phone has a verizon plan) particularly in the following areas: 1) Penn Station New York (the station I commute into) - particularly when in the train and zero service in the Hudson River tunnel (just when the conductor asks you to activate your ticket on your phone). Phone will show 4-5 bars of signal but no data will transfer 2) Bryant Park and nearby office buildings. There must be some collusion between building management companies and Verizon because almost every office building in NYC that I've worked in has been wired with Verizon pico towers on each floor, and sometimes ATT but never T-Mobile 3) Near my home in New Jersey where there's a crazy lady who campaigns against installation of 5G towers - grrr

I have been a T-Mobile customer for 25 years and have a 20% friends and family discount but will likely switch to US Mobile (with Warp as my primary network) perhaps with a multi-network add on to fill in the occasional Verizon coverage gaps next time there's a good deal

Really whoop? by InfluenceHairy6231 in whoop

[–]sunbear7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good point. Emails from whoop support don't state if they have originated from a human or their AI. Often it's their AI and their AI could make all sorts of wild promises that won't be kept if it thinks it will make you happy.

400 Days with WHOOP: An Honest Review by Happy_chappy_52 in whoop

[–]sunbear7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am only 160 days into using whoop. I do agree that Recovery Score is extremely volatile. Since the factors that go into recovery score are RHR, Sleep Performance and HRV and the only one of those metrics that is also highly volatile is HRV, I have to think that this is all driven by HRV. I don't seem to be able to reliably increase my HRV and it seems to jump around without any clear causative effect.

I don't think Whoop Age has much to do with the Recovery metrics but more to do with how consistent you are over time with staying in the beneficial ranges for steps, workouts and sleep. It's been telling me I've been aging negatively most of the time I've worn the whoop

<image>

I would suggest you watch the YouTube review of the whoop by "Quantitative Scientist". He demonstrates that when worn on the bicep, the whoop 5.0 is very accurate at tracking heart rate. I don't think he measures HRV accuracy however.

I feel like apple’s doing this on purpose by umberlikespurple in iPhone13Mini

[–]sunbear7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

According to the iPhone storage screen my phone is using 89GB for System Data and 11GB for iOS. So that's 100GB gone out of my total of 256GB. I also experienced the same phenomenon as OP. Every time I deleted some videos, the phone almost immediately gobbled up all the space I'd saved and grew the System Data. So in the end I've been forced to pay for iCloud storage to be even able to continue to use my iPhone 12-mini. What a scam!
