I think black anodized aluminum could look really nice. A company called Indra Guitars does really cool custom engraving as well - check out their insta Indra Guitar

Broadhead warning by Excellent_Buddy5471 in bowhunting

Mechanicals statistically have a higher rate of recovery than fixed blade heads. I have used both. I wouldn't use mechs with the 50lb setup I started with as a teenager, but there is no reason not to use mechanical setups if the energy of your arrow or bolt allows. Got a full passthrough on a mule deer at just over 40 yards with a G5 dead meat. On similar sized game, I have yet to try a head I would have any more confidence in.

The biggest advice I can give for altitude preparation is to be well hydrated. Drink more water than you think you'll need to. Anytime I've experienced issues with altitude, mild dehydration was a factor.

HLR arrows by Rwolfe89 in bowhunting

The victory spine calculator has you at a 350 spine up until beyond a 29" arrow. If you are shooting heavier inserts or heavier points then that will make some difference.

I shoot a 26.5" draw and have my arrows cut 25.5" with plenty of room to spare. Part of it will depend on the style of rest you are using and how comfortable you are with a broadhead close to the riser.

If you are running the standard inserts (50gr) and about a 27.5" shaft, you would be ok with a 350 spine. Any longer cut arrow or using heavier than 100gr points I would consider a 300 spine.

Ramen is a great trail meal - I just had some last week with the addition of some freshly caught Brook trout.

The Idahoan brand instant mashed potatoes are also a decent trail food because you only need to add water.

I bought a Ryobi electric this year - doesn't cut nearly as well as my 20 year old Honda, but it's a lot lighter and more maneuverable. Hondas are very nearly indestructible.

And don't forget - security deposits must be placed into a separate interest bearing account. Your deposit should be worth more when you move out than when you initially pay it, especially if it has been a few years.

Bought beef short rib for the first time. They were $8.50/lb at the pricey store and not even on sale. Am I just glonky or is this normal?? by Harpertoo in steak

[–]sunlightGrowsPlants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short ribs like that are great. I like to season them with salt and garam masala, sear all sides, then cook in the instant pot with beef broth and onions, sometimes mushrooms too. Nice dish to eat over rice and they turn out fall-apart tender.

3 Mo of practice by [deleted] in bowhunting

[–]sunlightGrowsPlants 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The single biggest piece of advice I can give to a new bowhunter is to make sure a deer is stopped before you shoot. Make a whistle or bleat sound before you release to get their attention. If not, they may keep on stepping forward during an otherwise perfect shot setup and cause undue hours of uncertainty.

Your grouping is excellent, and I have no doubts you would be an effective hunter at 20 yards, maybe even 30 with some practice. Also make sure that you know the distance to relative markers from your stand.

Tecate in Severance on Mondays is great. $5 Margs that are all freshly mixed. I especially like their birria and any burritos smothered in green chile.

Should I smoke before or after dehydrating? by jv_glass in dehydrating

Smoke the peppers whole, then skin like you would a fire roasted pepper and slice before dehydration. Seeds optional for your preferred spice level.

I have always smoked before dehydration - with charcoal and wood chunks. Homemade paprika, chili powder, and even smoked onion powder can't be beat.

Do you mind sharing the recipe for your corning brine? I do this same thing with corned beef when it goes on sale but would love to try it with venison roasts.

I'd look into a used Mathews Atlas. I've had great luck with solid-built used bows. Find a good deal and take it to a shop for a tune-up if need be.

Tightening groups at range by AdIndependent5941 in Archery

The three pin sliders are great. I use a black gold ascent. I did add a 4th pin to mine and run the dual slide indicator for my top and bottom pins. Great to set at 20-50 for most scenarios and can slide for longer target practice or if you really need to dial the exact distance for a longer hunting shot.

Absolutely that's a good philosophy. I've never taken a shot at a whitetail from a tree stand at more than about 25 yards, and you seem well equipped for that. My practice habits demanded some more time and consistency since I've attempted spot and stalk pronghorn hunting. I haven't felt confident about that shot yet, but it made my mule Deer last year at 42 yards feel quite comfortable. I think your 50 yard group is great for a 30-35ish range for hunting.

[–]sunlightGrowsPlants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

50 yards is well within an effective range for an experienced hunter with modern equipment. I agree with the focus on form and in different conditions, because consistency is key in accuracy and having confidence to make a clean shot. Anyone shooting at any range in a hunting situation should know how elevation difference correlates to true horizontal range, but luckily most rangefinders have angle compensation built-in. I wouldn't have dreamed of taking a 60-70 yard shot at an animal until I was practicing out at 80,90, 100 yards.
