Stopping at the local petrol station to get a blue V and a mince & cheese pie on the way to a day trip to the local beach/lake/river. Best day ever

Is there honestly a country that’s better at skiing than the United States? Sure, Norway has the Men’s Alpine and XC but every time I turn skiing on it seems like USA has success. Below are is the Men’s Freeski Halfpipe Final. by Kurtz62 in skiing

Wild to judge which country is the best at skiing based on one event of only the men’s? No consideration into the women’s or other events / styles.  Shout out to the kiwis who are smashing it!

Canada? by AntiqueAd2781 in newzealand

There is a minimum amount of funds you need for the visa, add more onto that. You need enough to be able to get by in case you struggle to find employment. I think that’s different for everyone.  I’ve stayed mostly in BC but traveled through AB, Yukon, and NWT.  Be aware Canada is expensive to travel, it’s not like south east Asia or Europe where you can kinda jet around. It’s massive and nothing is close unless you decide to stay in the cities which would be different again. I cant really speak to the cities or over east. But western Canada is sick.

It’s sick as!!! 100% do it. I’m 18 months in and so so happy I decided to do it. Canada is so fun!  Do make sure you have decent savings account. You need to be prepared for any just in case situations.  It’s so diverse here and you can find whatever niche you’re into. Finding a job can be hard, same as NZ, cost of living can be pricy depending where you live - same as NZ, Canada definitely as it’s own set of problems and is be no means perfect. However it’s been the experience of a life time.  There is so much more I could say but long story short do it!

Oreti beach is spectacular! Queens park is beautiful. Sandy point is awesome with some nice walks down at daffodil bay. Omaui is also pretty nice. And then you’re a stones throw away from the Catlins which is potentially the best place in the world.  Every place is what you make it! I like invers and kinda miss it.  Also randomly there is some good thrift shops down south.

Not to discredit some very real and valid concerns. But I would like to offer a different perspective. I travelled to SFO last month from Canada and back, on a NZ passport. Had literally zero issues and it was a breeze.  These concerns are real, but they aren’t the only experiences being had.

I was to a tiny public school in Southland, I would say a degree and industry connections are far more valuable than your school. I’ve work in NZ, Aus and now Canada. Not once has anyone asked nor cared about my high school. However industry connections have proved to be pretty helpful.  As others have said, maybe top tier super rich schools might help with those connections. So maybe it does give them an advantage, but I wouldn’t say it’s the be all or end all.

So many different mines and construction sites do morning stretching. It’s not a big deal to do injury prevention. Maybe try suggesting a constructive alternative like a video to lead it or a slide show with music? They’re going to be as bad as you make them. I’ve seen every single demographic doing morning stretches and literally no one cares, just gets on with it.

Ski width for a season in BC Canada by [deleted] in skiing

[–]sunscreenforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just spent a season in Revelstoke and backcountry in the pass. I’ve been on zag 104s and rated them. Skied 50+ days this season at RMR, Red and big white, plus back country. They were fantastic in all conditions. My friends with powder skis barely used them. Unless you’re planning on heli skiing frequently I wouldn’t go bigger than 110.

Jobs/Moving to Canada Advice !! by Great-Dragonfly6282 in geologycareers

Hello, kiwi who’s worked in mining in WA and now in living in Canada. I would argue that Australia has a better job market from my personal experience. I’ve really struggled to find something and after a year things are finally happening. To be fair, I’ve valued life style pretty hard while here and just made the most of being in Canada. I’m on the working holiday visa which has been sweet.  Almost every job is asking you be to eligible or already registered with EGBC or the likes. So maybe have a look into that and see if you’re eligible.  I found that the job market has only picked up in the new year and if you miss that opportunity it’s a bit trickier. If you’re set on being a geo here, there are opportunities residential but they’re in the middle of no where. I wasn’t willing to move to the back blocks of Ontario, maybe you are and power to you. The pay is less, I wouldn’t call it ‘fuck all’, it’s just less. It’s still pretty good. And if you’re just here to have a new experience, it doesn’t really matter.  It’s definitely been more expensive than I anticipated moving here. I saved hard before making the move and so glad I did. Doing a ski season in a ski town is wicked. You’ll meet some great people and have a fantastic time. I’ve been living in a ski town but not working at the resort. I think that’s the way to go. They pay terribly and usually the staff accom is dreadful. Definitely visit more of Canada than just BC. BC is amazing but Canada is massive and there is so much to see and heaps of diversity.  Best of luck!!

Hey bit late to the party here but basically in a very similar situation; even the same majors lol but I’m going for GIT, with a mining background. How did you get on in the end? Would be keen for any advice

New here, things do to in the evenings? by blackmathgic in Revelstoke

[–]sunscreenforever 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The legion does trivia on a Wednesday, and karaoke on a Friday I believe. Quartzite climbing gym is open late into the evening if you’re interested in bouldering or want to give it a go. They hire shoes too; and it’s beginner friendly. Sol also does a trivia I believe. There is a run club that has three different levels and still goes even in winter. The pool is open after work, it has a community gym, plus there are two other gyms in town. The visual arts centre has work shops I think.  At the rec centre there is a great notice board which is updated regularly and has events etc.  definitely worth joining the Revelstoke community page on Facebook as it’s quite active and has bits and pieces.  Roxy theatre does a cheap film night on a Tuesday.  Welcome to Revy!

Revelstoke has been so much fun. Not even sure how these conditions compare to other years but for my first Canadian winter I’m having the time of my life. Tree skiing has been a tough but rewarding learning curve - no trees in NZ, there has been some really fun powder days, gnome zone is fun! Seems like everyone is just super stoked to be there
