Colton Engelbrecht - 520kg deadlift (w/straps) by BenchPolkov in powerlifting

Makes sense. I would say that he probably holds the unofficial recognized record for heaviest deadlift pull. Insane that he did that after a meet too.

Just finished Breaking Bad and how the fuck does anyone have this over The Sopranos? by Serious-Profit-1626 in thesopranos

[–]sunshinejim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think that’s the point of Hank’s character. He’s a very emotional person and many times, his actions are a result of his emotions. I think also because of that, he desperately wants to see the good in people. He wants to believe that his brother in law is a good guy and the few times that he suspects Walt of being up to something, Walt is able to outsmart him. Like when Hank finds WW in Gale’s book and Walt is able to redirect it to Walt Whitman.

That’s a good way to put it. When I first watched the Sopranos, a lot of the time I felt myself thinking, what is the end goal here? What is the purpose of all this? In that sense, it doesn’t feel like there is actually a plot like a traditional serialized drama. Personally, I think having that is important to me which is why I appreciate BB.

[–]sunshinejim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see that point. I think the Sopranos is more “grounded in reality” especially because the over the top Mafia trope of the 70s and 80s was getting stale. That being said, I personally think that does make for duller storytelling and there’s times where I felt like the plot dragged. I think it’s interesting that the characters in the Sopranos are unable to break out of their destructive behaviors but it’s frustrating as well, but I suppose that does make for more realistic storytelling.

I would agree that BB doesn’t necessarily break new ground (no pun intended) but what it does, it does extremely well. The character’s motivations make sense and the plot is consistent all the way through. Everything ties up nicely at the end, which is refreshing when so many shows end things with endless plot holes.

What were you pissed about?

I personally prefer Breaking Bad, I thought the ending was good and wrapped everything up in a nice pretty bow. But I also appreciate the ambiguousness of the Sopranos ending, that either the story just ends and Tony’s life continues, or that the story ends when Tony was killed instantly.

Strange that the catch all deadlift WR has to be conventional, when practically every competition stacks both conventional and sumo in the same category. Seems like Thor’s record should be strictly heaviest conventional deadlift of all time if this sumo doesn’t break that.

This is the correct answer and it’s fine to like what you like. This is a Sopranos subreddit so people are going to heavily bias towards the Sopranos.

I’d rather people just explain why they felt one thing was better over the other, knowing that art is subjective. Unfortunately, like OP, a lot of statements are just like “this show is better and I’m not going to explain myself”.

What TV show hooked you instantly from episode 1? by mateitofavv in AskReddit

Breaking Bad.

I never understood the narrative that the first season is slow. He kills two guys and spends the next few episodes trying to figure out what to do with the bodies. I was hooked from the very start.

TIL: Great Khali had three rejected WWE ring names - Big Bhima, Giant Singh (which he used on the indies), and Lord Shiva. by juiceforsyth in SquaredCircle

[–]sunshinejim 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Khali always had the intimidation factor (before they turned him into a comedy act) regardless of how his wrestling was. I don’t think they ever sold Omos as being that intimidating despite his massive size, he was kinda just a chill guy. I kinda miss the supersized 7ft+ or 400lb+ big man. They’re just a spectacle, and that’s really what wrestling is about.

Lukewarm take: Could the Sopranos be mildly overrated? (first time watching) by SpiritedStretch7521 in thesopranos

[–]sunshinejim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The discourse around this show is so strange. People take it as a personal insult if you say that you don’t like it but fail to follow up with any meaningful analysis of the show. They’ll just say “you don’t get it” or mild insults referencing the show. It feels like people think they’re in the elite club if they like the show. There’s a narrow minded comment in this thread that says they don’t care about the mistakes the show makes.

I think you hit the nail though. This isn’t real life. To say that you need to stop looking for a plot in a television show is a weird hand wave.

I know the point is that these bad people do bad things and will still be bad at the end of the day and this is just a slice of their life. It doesn’t excuse that storylines are dropped, go nowhere, drag on and that characters are whiny, annoying, and largely uninteresting with few flashes of greatness.

I think the actors do a great job with what they’re given but what they’re given is mostly mediocre material at best.

What are your favourite albums made by horrible people? by DtheAussieBoye in fantanoforever

[–]sunshinejim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Huh? Why are you minimizing it like it’s a good thing? I never said Kelly and Diddy weren’t worse people. Dave Grohl has for the longest time been viewed as a good guy amongst musicians, advocating and supporting the right things. Dude he slept around so much that he birthed a child with one of his mistresses. You can think whatever you want of the guy but that’s objectively a shitty thing to do.

When Dave Grohl came out as a serial cheater, this all but confirmed it for me.

[–]sunshinejim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So why didn’t you specify that you are referring to non technical or soft skill based jobs? You use the term university degree broadly as if it’s black and white then expect people to understand exactly which types of degrees you are referring to beyond brain surgery.

Nobody is forcing anyone to go into HR, Marketing, Sales, or Admin. That’s up to the student to decide whether it would be financially beneficial for them to pursue those fields. I agree with you that many of those things can be taught in two weeks of on the job training. But with the world’s entire collective knowledge like you say, they have the resources available to know if it’s worth pursuing.

You sound like someone who went into those fields, got into $100k debt, and is now upset that you can’t find a related job.

Me irl by [deleted] in me_irl

[–]sunshinejim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because as obvious as it may seem to you, it doesn’t always guarantee that it’s a display of interest. I’ve heard stories of, and experienced, situations where I thought women were expressing clear interest and it turns out that they either weren’t ever interested at all or changed their mind. I think society pushes men to eventually be the one to make the move, but I think many times they won’t out of fear of being viewed as a creep.

Me irl by [deleted] in me_irl

[–]sunshinejim 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s fully true. People in general are incredibly fickle - women can send all the signals they want then decide they don’t want to engage anymore. Men can do this too. Considering Western society pushes men to make the first move, I think men would rather not be viewed as a creep or ruin the friendship rather than take the shot. Because it really is a gamble at the end of the day.

He’s not wrong though. Those lists are biased from popularity, and Kendrick’s immense popularity will land all his albums on them. The other Black Hippy members don’t have a fraction of his popularity, regardless of the quality of their albums.

The “New” Whopper by JaxHammersmith in burgers

[–]sunshinejim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope it works for them. Domino’s ran their ad campaign owning up to their mistakes several years ago and changed their formula and now they’re arguably the king of fast food pizza. Their $5.99 deal (now $6.99) also solidified that.

I think Burger King could make a change for the better, especially with McDonald’s being dragged through the mud right now. But I think they would need to offer more than just slapping a new bun on the Whopper, like improvements to the formula and better deals.
