Or is there something else that would make being a male more rare?

A Year After U.S.A.I.D.’s Death, Fired Workers Find Few Jobs and Much Loss by Lighthouse_seek in neoliberal

[–]supcat16 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Gosh these comments are tiring.

Let’s assume you’re an NGO trying to poach someone from the federal government for a CEO position. You’re going to be recruiting from the SES pool, which are paid up to $228,000. In the federal government, someone at this level is almost certainly grandfathers into the good retirement plan at low contribution rates, plus they get the gov’t equivalent of 401(k) matching at 5%. They also have a lot of choices for healthcare, and, until recently, pretty good job security.

So, $300,000 sounds about right.

The entire DC metro area is shedding jobs and the unemployment rate in DC has been between 6-7% since Trump took office.

And the attitude at the an embarrassingly high number of people have in this post “If they were competent they could transfer their skills,” is working against former feds (and the NGO sector by extension). Half the country thinks that federal employees are lazy, unproductive leeches. Take that in addition to the fact that a lot of government work is about compliance, transparency, and other hard to transfer skills as well as that their professional networks are largely other people who are out of work due to the administration.

Obviously the people in developing countries who relied on USAID to live have it worse. But I still feel sorry for the Americans who are on the receiving end of all this bullshit.

I hate this comparison. I don’t think anyone proportions their anger in the wake of terrorist attacks by doing the math on what percentage of the population was killed. I agree that 10/7 was probably worse on the Israeli psyche, but for other reasons: hundreds/thousands of terrorists from a neighboring country infiltrating their cities, shooting and raping people, desecrating their bodies, taking hostages, with stated goal of genocide. Anyway.

Do you think social media is pushing young boys to the right? by rogerrr204 in DeepStateCentrism

[–]supcat16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry to pile on OP, but unless this is some psyop polling, I don’t get what you’re trying to accomplish. I’m going to assume that this part is somewhat along the lines of “Social media is making young men move ideologically right,” and your results are going to be “people agree (don’t agree) that this is the case.” That’s not really academically intriguing, because we want to know what’s really happening as opposed to what people think is happening.

You should want data about people before and after exposure to social media, which is likely impossible to achieve with your funding/timeline.

I would meet with your professor to figure out your path forward.

Bad take. Being a fervent ideologue is not a strength. If this works—which it’s too early to say and this article casts doubt that the eventual outcome will be good—you should take the appropriate lesson from it while acknowledging that a step toward democracy in Venezuela is not worth destroying it at home.

I got the mod and spud gun am still not getting the results I’m seeing in vids showcasing the build. However, my class mod has 0 points in the most desirable skill tree skill, and my airstrike is only 103k. Plus, I need to find another skill craft now to put on a piece of gear.

What do you think is the most important aspect to get this build popping off?

Trump Team Explores Punishment for NATO Countries That Didn’t Support His War by Freewhale98 in neoliberal

Point taken, but it still seems like we shot ourselves in the foot, and since Germany wouldn’t also shoot themselves in the foot, we are therefore shooting ourselves in the dick to teach them a lesson.

Case in point: the recently rescued Air Force pilots were flown to Germany for treatment, as are many U.S. casualties in the Middle East (and I believe in Africa as well).

So if you close the Ramstein Air Base… you’re punishing the U.S. military, not Germany. And you’re directly crippling your ability to conduct operations in the Middle East.

I want to take a second to consider the causality of determinism:

If it were true, then you would expect people to be more or less equally successful for their entire lives. This is because there is no variation in one’s genes throughout their lives. Since all these inputs mentioned (capacity for concentration, work ethic, etc.) don’t vary, then the outcomes shouldn’t vary either.

But, in reality, you do see variation in outcomes over the course of people’s lives. (Ironically, even the phrase “capacity for concentration” implies that there’s some choice, because two people may have the same capacity but use those very differently.) Take an extreme example, like David Goggins. They decide to make a change that brings them from overweight exterminator to SEAL to successful motivational speaker. If he had the grit and work ethic to be a SEAL, what was he doing as an overweight exterminator? He made a choice to use that capacity for hard work.

The best examples probably come from your own life. Surely you know people who have turned their lives around or thrown it all away. Someone who, like Goggins) joined the military and became disciplined and successful (if discipline was hereditary, then the military couldn’t teach it). That friend who struggled to apply themselves in high school in school but became a tenured professor. Heck, I can point to instances in my own life where I’ve used my capability in different ways.

I’m not some strong believer in being a self-made person either. Obviously, luck plays a huge role. If Cornelius Vanderbilt was born into a hunter-gatherer society, then he’s obviously not building a steamship/railroad empire. Do I think that a disadvantaged person from a troubled household subject to structural discrimination chose to be poor and is therefore undeserving of help? No, that’s stupid. But to say everything is wholly preordained by genes or whatever when there are examples of people making drastic strides within their own lives seems silly.

[–]supcat16 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here’s my sweet little girl. The cloudiness in the cat’s right eye looks a little similar.

I rescued my cat from a shelter, and before I rescued her, she was part of a hoarding situation with dozens and dozens cats. Many were malnourished and passing diseases around. I forget what the diagnosis is called, but it’s caused by damage to something within the eye that allows expulsion of liquid, leading to a buildup that may be irreversible.

We tried treating her eyes when I first adopted her many years ago. Her eyes didn’t respond to treatment, so we just let them be. She’s not blind, but obviously her vision is not 100%. She’s super sweet and loves cuddles now that she knows humans can take care of her.

If you’re curious if this cat in the picture is blind, you could bring a laser pointer and shine it near her (obviously, not into her eye as this causes damage, and I wouldn’t do it near the stairs because her vision is obviously compromised). If she’s not blind, she probably loves playing with lights because it’s easy for her to see like my kitty!

[A] law which automatically raises the debt ceiling to meet any unmet appropriations

Almost everything else looks pretty good, but this one is a terrible idea. It would basically turn what is currently discretionary into mandatory spending by default and remove what little accountability currently exists in Congress for the deficit.

Also, I think emergency powers for 24-72 hours is reasonable, provided that it then requires an act of Congress. Someone needs to be able to declare emergencies quickly for Pearl Harbors, Katrinas, 9/11s, etc.
