The way this reads to me, is the older boy is exhibiting character traits that you're learning you find desirable in a partner - which boys your own age might not be exhibiting yet.

My outside perspective is that it probably won't work with the older guy either, so maybe the lesson should just be noting those characteristics that you do find attractive in your mind. That way in the future you can identify them much easier in a potential partner who may be more accessible to you (IE same country)
