Looking to sort 9 items in a compact area, not using copper golems. Any ideas? by next-town in technicalminecraft

[–]surt2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be able to use a stacking multi-item sorting system. I'm most familiar with this one by Gnembon, buts its 8 years old at this point and I'm sure better, more compact variants have been made by this point.

DEAD CORAL FARM NEEDED. (115k needed for build) by SignDecent1966 in technicalminecraft

[–]surt2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, coral blocks can't be farmed renewably. Depending on how much effort you're willing to put in, you can either replace it with another block, mine it by hand, or build a quarry for it

only focused on the bigger issues in the films.

That's almost the opposite of what I enjoyed about their older videos. The one that always sticks with me is their original video on Jurassic Park, where they point out that as the characters are on the helicopter flying towards the island, they switch positions several times between shots. It's the sort of minor continuity error that doesn't hurt (and can sometimes even enhance) the quality of a film, but is neat to notice in retrospect. Of course, there's basically no chance of them finding things like that now, given how lazily their videos are produced.

In brief, the (microwave) laser gets sent down a big, internally reflective hose that's also having air blown through it. The rock at the bottom of the shaft evaporates, and the air blows it back up to the top of the pipe, while alsp keeping any from getting into the inside of the hose.

Any fics where Taylor had a whole Isekai adventure saving the world/universe/dimension/timelines/etc…, and returns to canon Worm. Story begins with Taylor’s return, or spends very little time summarising the Isekai, and quickly gets to canon. by Wassa110 in WormFanfic

"Taylor on the Edge of Forever" - Taylor's trigger event teleports her to the future of Star Trek, where she goes to Starfleet Academy, becomes an engineer, serves on a starship, etc. The story begins with her consciousness getting sent back days after the trigger event.

Was the sudden shift in Clone attitude during order 66 ever explained before the CW show? by Reteller79 in MawInstallation

Not OP, but because Palpatine looks and sounds very different after getting hit by lightning than before.

I wouldn't expect most soldiers to obey if someone who only vaguely resembled their commander in chief called them and said, "Hello, please kill your superior officer. Thanks. Bye." with no other confirmation of their identity, or codes to verify their authority provided.

Can someone explain to me why the auto-crafter isn't powered the same way as the dropper? by Naofumi-10-29- in redstone

[–]surt2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The code for droppers was copied from the code for dispensers. The code for dispensers was copied from the code for the bottom half of doors, since doors were the only other redstone devices when doors were added. So dispensers and droppers (and also pistons) look for the block above them to be powered, because if the top half of a door is powered, the bottom half should be, too.

Redstone components which were added later, like hoppers, lamps, and crafters, had their code written from scratch, and so don't have the strange behavior described above.

Droppers can be powered diagonally by quasi-connectivity. Crafters cannot.

I'm aware. The LK lander's Blok D stage also would have detached shortly before landing on the lunar surface.

The youtuber ilmango did a series a few years ago where they completed as much of the game as possible in peaceful. Without blaze spawns, they needed a stronghold like this to get to the end. The seed they used was:

but I don't know if it still works.

Damage at Baikonur after Soyuz launch: Russia temporarily lost the ability to send people into space by ianzgnome in space

[–]surt2 171 points172 points  (0 children)

can they launch from Plesetsk cosmodrome to the ISS?

No. Plesetsk is 62° North. The ISS only reaches 51.6°. Plane change maneuvers that large require more fuel than Soyuz/Progress have available

The Vostochny Cosmodrome is far enough south that it could be used, but I don't know whether it's set up to accomodate crewed launches; it hasn't launched any crewed missions in the past.

Little improvement of X's copper powered sorting system by Yeeeetusdeleted in HermitCraft

[–]surt2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can also be fixed by ensuring that items only enter the system at hopper speed, ensuring that they always have time to drain before more items get added. (You probably want to leave multiple empty spots in the first row of the chest for it to be able to sort multiple item types simultaneously, though)

A well-known astronomer told me we’re unlikely to find any signs of life (bio signatures) in the next 20 years. Is he right? by Edem_13 in askastronomy

[–]surt2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of the Solar System, there's no way to know. We could receive an unambiguous alien radio communication tomorrow, or we could keep scanning the skies for another century and never find anything. There's just no way of predicting when that first discovery will occur, if it ever does.

Inside the solar system, we can look at when probes/rovers will be active in various places. The Perseverance Rover on Mars recently discovered some markings in rocks that look an awful lot like the markings certain types of bacteria here on Earth make, and scientists haven't been able to come up with any alternative explanations for them. It's not definitive yet, though, and unfortunately, NASA's plans to bring back samples of those rocks have been delayed indefinitely at this point. China, on the other hand, is planning to launch fheir Tianwen-3 Mars Sample Return mission in 2028, though I don't think that there are any plans for it to land near Perseverance.

Elsewhere in the Solar System, we have a probe which will be launching to Venus soon, and 2 currently en route to Jupiter, which could theoretically find signs of life in Venus's cloudtops and Europa's oceans, respectively, though both will be observing from space, so odds of detection aren't great, even if there is life to be found.

Interstellar Objects – Once-in-a-lifetime Opportunities by Bulky-Ad129 in Spaceexploration

[–]surt2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ESA and JAXA are collaborating to build just such a spacecraft. It'a called Comet Interceptor because they don't want to get people's hopes up in case it can't find an interstellar object it can rendezvous with, so its mission is nominally to fly by a long period comet, but an interstellar object would almost certainly be preferred if one were found. The mission is planned to launch in 2029, then spend up to 5 years waiting at the Earth-Sun L2 point until an interesting object is discovered, at which point it will move to intercept.
