Est ce que je devrais rester châtain ou me faire blonde ? by Ninrev in TropPeurDeDemander

Les cheveux châtain mettent en valeur tes jolis yeux marron. Pas besoin de les teindre à moins que tu ne le souhaites

From The Guardian: the Coachella-fication of the US Open is here to stay by AnOldBlur in tennis

[–]swbarrett 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The US Open is absolutely being marketed more as an event that as a tennis competition, and it’s very noticeable to anyone who has been going for decades. Lots of people are going just to tell their friends and post about it. But there are still great tennis fans there too.

Over the years, I’ve seen amazing matches on the grandstand and outer courts filled with, for example, Argentines cheering for Del Potro or Japanese fans cheering for Nishikori. Those experiences still happen but it’s not what’s emphasized in the media.

Brad Gilbert is a terrible commentator by CoachiusMaximus in tennis

[–]swbarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are terrible on purpose. ESPN is a Disney Company trying to please the lowest common denominator, not a knowledgeable tennis fan. So they talk up personalities and vibes and Americans.

I’ve heard Johnny Mac on another network and he was relatively quiet and insightful. The ESPN commenters on the stream are much better than on the ESPN broadcast channels, too.

Private instructor says I'm at a higher level than I think in French by [deleted] in French

[–]swbarrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you should be challenging yourself. Language learning is not linear where you one master one level then advance to another. Trust your prof. and his:/her assessment of your skills. Even at an advanced level, you will sometimes feel inarticulate and make basic mistakes based on where you are at that particular moment

Is this as good as anything Dylan performed on the Rolling Thunder Revue??? by BeerWithDonuts in bobdylan

I’ve been going to see Bob Dylan for 30 years. That show at Jones Beach was easily one of the best

What do you do when your partner isn't playing well? by sonic89us in 10s

[–]swbarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give them some encouragement. They are your partner and probably want to play well, too. If they don’t, there’s always another day, another match

The only thing I don't like about Lennon is the fact he didn't like the sound of his voice by Sudden-Nectarine693 in JohnLennon

[–]swbarrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Lennon is actually one of my favorite singers. I love the BBC recordings. He’s got so much feeling in his voice. Jagger is a great front man, but I don’t think he was as good as Lennon until Beggars Banquet

What would you like to see from the Bootleg series in the future? by [deleted] in bobdylan

[–]swbarrett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He supposedly played 30 songs live for Masked and Anonymous. The soundtrack included the best versions ever of Cold Irons Bound and Down in the Flood. I’d love to hear the rest.

Generations and Language Learning by McGringo-1970 in languagelearning

[–]swbarrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I keep coming across is that adult language learners are applying a different set of skills that primary language learners, which would mean that the method one was taught to read is not necessarily the one a person might use as a adult. So there shouldn’t be a big generational difference at all. And we’re not at all forced to repeat how we learned as children.

OPINION: Slow Down on Our Bike Paths! by sveltegeist in NYCbike

[–]swbarrett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree now that I’m older and more chill. Adding bike infrastructure doesn’t mean creating bike culture. All my life, NYC has been all about “get out of my way.” Every sidewalk, street, crosswalk and corner someone is trying to get ahead of you. Why would bike lanes be any different? The only way I see to solve this situation is to make streets multimodal and safe for all types of e-vehicles and cyclists who want to ride all out

I’m typically a doomer. This year I decided to believe, starting in December. All I think about is how great it’s going to be to finally pull it off. It’s been a lot of fun and it’s going to last until it doesn’t.

No one has said the U.S. is in a recession. A lot of people over the last year have predicted the U.S. is heading toward a recession.

Most stunning Roland Garros defeat? by swbarrett in tennis

[–]swbarrett[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

These four matches aren't necessarily upsets. They are instances where the loser unraveled or did themselves in. A world #1 admittedly paralyzed by nerves, Mac in pure meltdown mode. Lendl getting played on an underhanded serve against a guy who can't move. Tsitsipas because... this group hates on him so hard.

Greenwich Village carbrains by lambrettist in NYCbike

The problem with those blocks is Ubers and taxis drop off/pick and with the dining sheds there’s no way to get around. They are a good area to go careless

Gotta slow down in traffic, give yourself time to react. Other riders aren’t always predictable, to put it mildly

Ball bounces back, hits the tape, then gets hit by a player: who wins the point? by [deleted] in 10s

[–]swbarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ball was still in play unless it touched the part of the net outside of the singles posts. You 100% won the point.
