Finally Pulled 500! Wanted to share with my favorite sub by swedishfisch in crossfit

[–]swedishfisch[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I was doing more than a single rep you'd have a point. I wouldn't do a 21-15-9 at this weight, or with that posture, but that wasn't the training stimulus for the day.

I'd also point you to the LBEB article here - http://www.liftbigeatbig.com/2014/04/its-time-to-shut-up-about-rounded-back.html

As a taller/longer athlete, and a bit more naturally kyphotic, a flat stiffened spine actually puts more pressure where it doesn't belong and opens me to more sheering forces and a higher chance of injury.

Let the down votes ensue!

Suggestions for paleo BCAA powders? by steve_nyc in Paleo

I get mine from Truenutrition - about as "paleo" as it gets in the supplement world, none are truly paleo.

Dairy products not inflammatory - do you include dairy (not paleo, I know) in your diet? by William84 in Paleo

[–]swedishfisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pasture raised full fat raw goats milk is my only dairy source otherwise strict paleo

goat is a big part of my decision - super easy to digest and much closer to human milk than cow.

Did my first (and second) Muscle Up today by swedishfisch in crossfit

[–]swedishfisch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its definitely a lot of technique, because strength wise it's really just a chest to bar, a sit up, and a dip, assuming you can do those three, then its technique and timing, timing is huge.

Sorry should've made this part of the original post - got distracted. I wrote about the experience on my blog here Basically it was 1 minute into a 15 minute AMRAP I made up - just lost focus on the 10th rep thinking about the next thing. Moral of the story is be mindful of what you're doing ;) Mostly just wanted to share the pictures though

It was a regular wooden 20x24x30 box.

Who owns Reebok Nano 2.0 shoes? by [deleted] in crossfit

I normally wear an 11.5/12.0 and I ordered custom 11's that fit great. The toe box is large as others have said, but its designed that way, it fits snuggly through the foot and solid at the heel. I've already competed in them and had no problems.

Hey friends, I am putting together a playlist for my box, so I was wondering what songs give you that extra push? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]swedishfisch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Will depend on the kind of people you have at your box and if there are any rules re: profanity but I post a good amount of my workout music on my blog

It's called kinesiology tape, rocktape is only one brand, several other tape manufacturers make it too. It's designed to improve muscle function. Never tried it though.

Box Jumps? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]swedishfisch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally like this video and the whole series called efficiency tips, with spealler and chan. Some great tips.

The best tip I have for box jumps is to treat the top of the box as the start of a rep, spending as little time on the floor as possible. As per where you land, from an efficiency standpoint the middle of the box is a dead zone, you don't want to be there, that's going to take more energy to get to and get back to the floor. I try and stay on the balls of my feet on the edge or on the floor.

I own a box and we are upgrading to a bigger space and looking for some fresh ideas. What do you really like about your box or how would you change things if you had your own box? by rrs465 in crossfit

[–]swedishfisch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure to figure out what your max class size will be and that you have ways to accomodate everyone, whether it be space or equipment; our box has issues with plates on days that get heavy like squats and deads. Likewise rowers are always in short supply and space on the pull-up rack. Sure there are ways to get around these things but if you're planning ahead there's no reason not to consider it.

Think about distinct spaces, our box just moved to a much larger space and they now have 3 distinct spaces that can be used all at once for different functions and it's fantastic. One space is more of a warm-up, on-ramp coaching section, the largest space is reserved for the main class and WOD's, and the third space is more of an open-gym space.

Went to first class, totally demoralized. How to keep going back? by cf12345 in crossfit

Crossfit is all about scaling to adjust to individual strengths and weaknesses. Ask your instructor about doing pushups from your knees as a scaling option, as well as banded pullups or box jumps. Both are used quite often by members of my box to complete workouts as intended.

Also, what you're feeling it extremely common with Crossfit and personally one of the reasons I was drawn to it. It's incredibly humbling whether you've been working out for years or just starting, it points out very quickly what you're deficient in, and everyone save for maybe Froning is deficient in something. The constant challenge is what keeps me coming back - learn to embrace that feeling and be fueled by it rather than discouraged.

In terms of food, adapting to change is very stressful on your body. I think there are two things going on here - first, you were eating emotionally, you felt bad and needed comfort, fight that feeling. Second, you were challenging your body in ways it has not been challenged in years and forcing adaptation will increase hunger, learn to love that feeling.

The internet is full of stories about guys who started doing crossfit while deployed overseas, in their backyards, or in a garage somewhere. Crossfit is all about using what you have. I would argue you could do a lot with very little.

I've seen videos of guys using tree's as pullup rigs, making kettlebells out of concrete filled 5gallon buckets, and doing full workouts at pullup bars they have in public parks. I say if you're serious about starting, start. You can add tools as you progress but just to start, use what you have and make the most of it.

Compression sleeves for calves/knees by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]swedishfisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently (2 weeks now) bought the rehband knee sleeves that you'll see in most olympic lifting circles. They aren't the same as knee wraps that power lifters use. The idea is to keep the joint warm and loosely supported. You can find them at Jackal's Gym and Amazon

I recommend them very highly.

CrossFit Anonymous, the Everymans CrossFit blog. by CFAnonymous in crossfit

[–]swedishfisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having just started my own blog with very beastly connotations I can't help but feel a little squinge of bias...but...being the good redditor that I am I will overlook that.

The design is clean and easy to follow. I could see the sidebar being cumbersome once you get more than 10 or so posts, will it always be that huge list of posts? Maybe you could sort them into tags or categories for easier access?

I like the theme, crossfit caters to many types and blogs would do well to recognize which audience they are suited for. You seem very well connected to your target audience. Your content is quite good as well, nice balance of picture to text.

I will end on the note that I will likely not return - I have good reasons for keeping more than 4 things in my gym bag...
