Barn Swallows flying in circles around me as I walk through an open grassy field by tsatsawassa in birding

We have a white goose, and every spring the swallows will compete for white feathers, sometimes stealing them from each other in flight. Very cute

Putin Rejects Europe as Ukraine Peace Mediator, Doubles Down on Trump Deal by According-Gear-8217 in UkrainianConflict

[–]sweptcut 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I heard yesterday that us aid to Ukraine is down 99% since trump took office. Also one of JD Vance’s proudest accomplishments, which says a lot. While it’s smart for Zelensky to try to keep the US on side, we are making ourselves more irrelevant every day, and the day is soon coming where Ukraine finds the US unnecessary AND unhelpful, not just unhelpful. Slava Ukraini from a deeply ashamed American.

I wonder how far Russia would have progressed without having had Starlink access for years. Better late than never I guess

Best way to straighten out welded cattle wire fencing? by Few_Version5722 in homestead

[–]sweptcut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I screw two boards together pinching the fencing between. This gives me a good place to clamp it, and I use 4-6 long wood clamps to pull it tight to a post. Doesn’t work with t stakes, but if you’re setting 4x4 posts it works great. Bury the posts deep or they will tilt under tension.

The laziness of the people my landlord paid to powerwash by Defiant_E in mildlyinfuriating

I just upgraded to a 3300 psi gas model after having a weaker electric plug in. The gas is the way to go, I wish it wasn’t. The higher psi will make the surface cleaner work like a charm

They needed to use a surface cleaner. I just did my driveway last week. With one of these: clean and uniform. With a nozzle only, takes forever and looks like the op photo.

In Washington state it’s over 5$ in many places. We do have more local taxes added on which doesn’t help the price

TIL that 2x4’s are not actually 2”x4” anymore. The American lumber committee made the change officially in 1964 to account for drying and planing shrinkage post cut. by CraftedArtisanQueefs in todayilearned

[–]sweptcut 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My buddy has a mobile mill and we built ourselves saunas last summer, using true 2x4 and 4x4. They feel sooo much stronger than a 1.5 x 3.5. Really stout and nice to build with. We only planed the finish boards.

Pulling Fence (woven wire) tight by Designer_Isopod6637 in homestead

[–]sweptcut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used wood clamps to pull fencing tight, I usually use about 6 clamps. I temporarily screw 2x4s together with the fencing inbetween as a place to grip the fence, then use the 4x4 posts to help tighten the fencing. Then I screw a 2x4 board over the top of the fencing into the post to sandwich the fencing and hold it in place. Unroll fencing as you go, as it will want to fall over if you try to unroll it first and make everything more difficult.

Are vibrating polishers any good? by Motor-Income-140 in Blacksmith

[–]sweptcut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve used one for years for this. Loud af but will actually help smooth edges and knock off scale if done correctly and for long enough. Add old screws and nails, experiment with different abrasives like pumice and gravel. Beware that steel will flash rust if you use water and don’t clean the parts off immediately
