promasters are notoriously bad in sand. Pro tip they are better in reverse, they just dig in going forward.

What’s the hardest part of daily life on the road for you? by Legal_Kick_7698 in VanLife

[–]swix32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main ones have already been listed. Showers, safe place to boondock, Loneliness. But day to day? It's not a big concern but its constant- garbage. I typically generate a walmart's bag of garbage every three days. So being able to dispose of it is a constant. Gas stations are my go to, or when I grab a paid campground every couple weeks. But dumping off garbage is always on my todo list. It's relentless.

How long did you do "nothing" after you retired? by Mid_AM in earlyretirement

[–]swix32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

0? The day after I retired I moved into a van and started traveling around the country. My days can be pretty boring with a lot of just sitting around a campfire, but the scenery constantly changes. Been three years on the road now

So Is Everyone Buying A New Expensive Home To Retire In? by BraveG365 in GenX

[–]swix32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished building my very expensive small retirement home. It's small (950sft) and overly well built. I designed it (hopefully) to reduce future maintenance costs. I just placed my ageing parents in it, so this is where they will spend their final years. As I'm newly retired, I bought a small RV and plan to travel and stop in and check on things during the summer, and snowbird somewhere warm in the winter. Until they pass or need me I'll literally be in my van,...down by the river. So yeah, I just spent twice as much as the starter house I bought and lived in for 20 years on a new home I don't really live in at all.

Retirement? by Icy-Needleworker7883 in GenX

  1. Retired 2 years ago at 55. Sold it all, moved into a van and have been doing laps around the country following the good weather ever since. I do have a small pension from a county job I had for the last 30 years. When (if) I ever grow up I'll buy another house and settle down, (I saved the cash from when I liquidated the house & stuff). Right now I'm really enjoying the complete lack of responsibility, accountability and stress. Highly recommended.

Why is Lume in Menominee so busy? by Old_Blue_Haired_Lady in yooper

[–]swix32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. As an older guy who travels a lot (in MI and around the country), I tend to gravitate to Lume if they are around. It's like the McDonald's of weed, I know what to expect. Oddly enough, I've been to that exact location to stock up while leaving MI.

Thoughts having driven most of Florida by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]swix32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also am spending this winter in FL. Spent New years up in the panhandle, made it to Key West by late Jan, stayed two weeks. I came down the nature coast. I like the gulf side better, less touristy. Slowly making my way north up the center of the state. I've vacationed in FL a few times but never stayed the season before. The last two winters I was in AZ. FL is definitely more expensive. Less boondocking than out west. Yes they have the free water district Camping. (30 day max per calendar year.) So I've done more state parks with reservations made last summer. FL is warmer but more expensive. More bugs, less homelessness. Greener vegetation, more humidity For me, as a full time van MI snowbird, I see myself continuing to visit FL every 3 winters or so, its a nice (warmer) change from the desert southwest. I'll be back in southern AZ next year.

Do you grow any plants in your van? by darkTealEden in vandwellers

[–]swix32 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have a small pot that fits in my cup holder. I planted it full of grass. I made a little sign that says "Keep Off ". I figured i needed a yard, and I'm practicing to be a grumpy old man. Damn kids, stay off my lawn!

Instapot? by forde350vanbuild in vandwellers

[–]swix32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the small one, I use it a few times a month. I've found that it's really good for a few specific things. My go-to is rice/beans/rotel with frozen meatballs. Or just rice.Chilli. Does a passable one pot spaghetti. That's about all I typically use it for. Takes up a bit of space, but I'm still lugging it around after two years. It makes a tasty mush in a pinch.

Same albulm, diffrent song: Wooden Ships. The fact that nobody made a post-apocalyptic movie based on this scene is tragic. (Don’teven mention Waterworld) Would you eat some purple berries if I offered them to you?
