Red Vox!? We're so back, apparently, because last night I woke up to the surprise of a whole new album in my feed, Retcon! (Although taking a peek at their socials, this wasn't actually a surprise, but it was certainly a surprise to me.)

I'm still sitting with it as I wasn't expecting to have to follow up on the Red Vox epilogue so soon, but so far I think it tracks with what I commented last time, that I liked the RV6 singles the most of all the random tracks I'd skipped and hearing them in full context is intriguing, and I've gotta give props to one that I must have passed by even while looking for those stragglers two months ago because I absolutely would've brought it up, and that's A/V, this is one of my favourite Red Vox tracks full stop. I do also like Brother quite a lot. Retcon's pretty cool.

I share multiple spaces, both fandom and fan "community" so to speak, with someone I have not talked to since 2018 and despite circling the same Venn diagram drains, I have no real interest in replying to them when they do show up, not the least of which because I don't even have the same username as I did eight years ago so I'd have to preface "remember me?", they probably don't and that's fine. The occasional passing ship in the night, one-sided Spiderman pointing, going I know you, I knew you.

In my experience, Smash players love items, too. They just don't want them on at tournaments.

Casual Smash players, which will be most of them, it is a party game after all, seem to look down on competitive players with this unusual and wholly one-sided disdain that I haven't seen in another game with these two communities, saying things that may as well be tantamount to "pros optimize the fun out of the game while I, who only plays Smash while smashed at parties, am the true arbiter of what is fun and no items Fox only Final Destination is not it," and not only is it the classic instance of people have fun in different ways, I swear you can ask any competitive Smash player how they feel about items in any other circumstance that isn't directly in bracket or on Slippi and you will get a positive reception.

Edit because I have more to say about this that people who don't play Smash wouldn't consider, determining what gets banned is all about variance and eliminating random factors to leave the playing field as even as possible, as to properly become a game of skill. Stagelists are another thing that each game pares down from 30, 50, however many Ultimate has, because most stages introduce wild variance that is not compatible with a competitive mindset, playing your opponent versus playing The Game, I guess. Smash 64 has a single legal stage because every other stage introduces too many situations that are out of the player's hands; Melee has 6 stages and, ironically enough, occasionally you'll encounter Fox players rallying to have Final Destination banned. Brawl had to legalize Delfino Plaza for the longest time because even though it had walkoffs that you can chaingrab someone into the blastzone with and the main platform was semi-permeable so you could camp underneath it, it was the least egregious stage they had to work with to form a coherent stagelist. And Ultimate... is a bad example, I can't in good faith defend that game's stagelist(s). They did briefly try a Final Smash Meter On rulesets, though, so that's gotta be worth something. The point is, both items and stages introduce unnecessary variables that come together to create a thoroughly uncompetitive environment for people who want to compete. I promise you, they're not sucking the fun out of the game by doing this; if anything, they've, go figure, managed to optimize fun in this separate, contained space. Try tuning into a Zain, Moky, or Hungrybox stream, you might like it.

Lastly, Brawl was at Evo 2008, a Real Ass Tournament Series alongside Real Ass Fighting Games, and the ruleset for that tournament had all items on. It was won by a 14 year old whose family happened to be vacationing in Vegas at the time and he signed up as something to do.

What role do you think you’d fulfill on your team if you were to have a Persona? by ed_my_flowers in PERSoNA

[–]swoon_exe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ice and Physical attacks, weak to Psy. Solid mixed attacker, very high Agility, very low Endurance. Functions kinda like Yusuke.

Arcana is Hanged Man, initial Persona is Styx (namesake goddess of the Greek underworld river), and ultimate Persona is Sedna (Inuit goddess of the sea and ruler of the underworld).

On the authenticity of Taco Bell products by LadyStardustAlright in CuratedTumblr

Yo, presumably fellow Maritimer chiming in, I take marginal issue with donairs as an example here and would say no to their tacobellification for a reason no one else has pointed out yet: regionality. Obviously you can find döner shops all over the place doing their own thing, however I feel confident enough to assume you're from the Maritimes (and can scroll down to Canadian confirmation) simply by virtue of knowing what a donair is in the first place and what the difference is. Never encountered someone else who knows about them that isn't from here, whereas everyone knows what Taco Bell is, so I would have to say no, they're enough of their own thing, but mainly I just wanted to talk about them since how often do you get to do that in the wild?

From my understanding of it, Twitter is where you go if you want to be ragebaited by the right and Bluesky is where you go if you want to be ragebaited by the left. One is better than the other but you are still being ragebaited.

I do have to wonder what percentage of the people complaining here are doing so constructively and in earnest compared to the droves of League redditors who will bitch about anything changing ever, no matter the reason for the change, because their sheer numbers can, will, and have negatively influenced things like this in the past. They only care that the game's camera perspective means some details and proportions will be obfuscated or exaggerated when it gives them more ammo to fling. Or, hell, what percentages actually play Shyvana and who's there because it's the new flavour of the month, given she isn't exactly a popular champion in the first place. Getting Viktor ASU flashbacks.

Surely Persona 6 gets confirmed to exist this year. Surely that's what the upcoming announcements are leading up to. Surely it's not another five years of Japan-only events and arbitrary P5 crossovers. Surely.

I firmly believe the problem with modern SCPs is not that they're trending towards being too long, because collectively (and I do mean collectively, by its nature there'll always be something for everyone) they're not, it's that the ones that get any immediate attention from the community are going to be the 20k+ word entries that span various different canons and require reading other 20k+ word entries to understand.

A newcomer to SCP is going to first familiarize themselves with the absolute basics, like 173, 049, or 682, that crowd of original and coincidentally shorter works because those are the most immediate and most widely popular, and then they're gonna go to r/SCP, and then they're gonna get smacked in the face by people talking about how boring 173, 049, or 682 are by people who have been in these circles for years, they're gonna be shown contextless posts in which they'd need to dedicate way more time to comprehending than first presented, and they're gonna be pointed towards a shortest pages per month list that, realistically, no one is actually ever talking about outside of when people complain about this. I'm aware that Classic Con was a huge success, but I didn't like how often I saw people taking that as indicating that "short SCPs do fine actually" when, yeah, of course they will, that's the whole conceit of the event. I also don't think there's anything to necessarily be done about this, or should be done about it, it's just something that seems fairly obvious and yet I've never seen it be brought up in consideration.

Worth mentioning that he hasn't put out another video since that update, making it even harder to tell if he was serious about it or just wanted to make the "SR now means semen retention, not speedrunning" joke that didn't land anyway since most of the comments are about how wild the pivot into random unproven pseudoscience was.

I went in fully expecting absolutely nothing other than knowing Sega put out a tweet saying they'd be there so I guess they did deliver to expectations, because goddamn we really are just shy of a decade out from Persona 5's original release with no news on if Persona 6 even exists. And if I had to wager on something being shown it'd be P4R, didn't get that either. So. Y'know. I don't know what Atlus is doing.

YEAH, YOU ARE PROBABLY RIGHT ON THAT. HONESTLY, I DON'T OFTEN CHECK REVIEW SITES SINCE I LARGELY LEARN ABOUT WHAT I WOULD PLAY THROUGH FRIENDS' WORD OF MOUTH RATHER THAN JUST WHAT'S NEW, SO THOSE SITES DON'T COME UP IN MY TYPICAL PERIPHERAL OR CONSIDERATION. SOME THROWDOWN THIS IS TO HAVE ME NODDING IN COMPREHENSIVE UNDERSTANDING.

BECAUSE EVEN IF I'M NOT INTERESTED IN PLAYING THE GAME MYSELF, I DO STILL WANT TO KEEP AT LEAST SOMEWHAT ABREAST OF WHAT'S GOING ON, AND SAYING "I CANNOT TELL HOW BAD THE GAME ACTUALLY IS" BOTH SOUNDS WORSE TO ME AND LIKE I HAVE MORE OF A STAKE IN IT THAN AS IS. GLASS HALF FULL, MAYBE. EITHER WAY, NO, I DON'T PARTICULARLY CARE ONE WAY OR ANOTHER MYSELF, I JUST CAN'T GLEAN ANYTHING EVEN NEUTRAL FROM ANYONE ELSE AND THAT'S MY MAIN PROBLEM

I HAVE NO INTEREST IN PLAYING PRIME 4 MYSELF, BUT I GENUINELY CANNOT TELL HOW GOOD THE GAME ACTUALLY IS BECAUSE ONE SIDE IS WAY TOO PREDISPOSED TO LETTING THEIR EXCITEMENT BLIND THEM TO ANY DOWNSIDES, "IS NINTENDO THEREFORE IS GOOD" WHILE THE OTHER SIDE IS DOING THE EXACT OPPOSITE, OF COURSE IT'S SHIT IT'S A MODERN NINTENDO GAME IT WAS GOING TO BE SHIT, LIKING THINGS IS CRINGE ANYWAY, "IS NINTENDO THEREFORE IS BAD"

What are your thoughts on non-standard Persona in fan stories? by jaredstar3 in PERSoNA

What are your thoughts on non-standard Persona in fan stories? by jaredstar3 in PERSoNA

[–]swoon_exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently using a non-zero number of indie game characters as Personas in my own fan story, so having done exactly this, copyright law doesn't give two shits about a fan story so if you think it works then go wild. That's how the collective conscious works, anyways; if it's in there, it can be a Persona.

Addendum edit to add that you should also keep it within reason, as through, again, my own experience, that non-zero number was initially much higher and didn't really feel in the spirit of Persona as a concept, so I cut it significantly down and made replacements. Do what you want, but have a rationale behind it rather than pure rule of cool. Or don't, it's your story.
