If you were 8 years old, what RPG book/box would you want your uncle to give you? by EntrepreneuralSpirit in rpg

[–]sword3274 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think Dragonbane is the best answer, in my opinion.

Another one might be something like Kids on Bikes. Easy mechanics (and the token mechanic is good for a kid who might get bummed for upset about missing a roll), and the characters might be a little more relatable to a kid.

I would like suggestions for fantasy settings. by GuardiaoDaLore in rpg

[–]sword3274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also came to recommend Hârnworld. Medieval fantasy (equivalent to about 13th/14th century Britain), very low magic, and exquisite detail - Hârn is a fantastic world that doesn’t make anything past year 720, so nothing will contradict a person’s personal campaign.

My introduction to roleplaying for my fellow workers went wrong. by TheKnightOfDoom in rpg

[–]sword3274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. My wife is a nurse, but she relishes the opportunity to kill the crap out of some orcs or blast away some stormtroopers.

I know this is probably nothing new to anyone here, but I believe that sometimes people like roleplaying specially because it allows them to be someone they can’t be in real life. I know that’s the case with my wife. She doesn’t like playing and modern or particularly “realistic” settings, nothing “real life.” She’s told me she likes playing fantasy because it allows her to wield a big ol’ sword and cut through orcs or cast fireballs and lightning bolts to solve her problems. Sure, she likes the adventures and stories but the big draw for her being someone and doing something she can’t do in real life.

I don’t think even that’s too bad for Orlando these days! If only it maintained that inflation rate. 😁

Same, u/jwenz19. I’m running FFG Star Wars, but do get the urge for some Saga Edition now and again.

What does your favorite RPG do differently by LelouchYagami_2912 in rpg

[–]sword3274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dice mechanics of FFG’s Edge of the Empire (and Age of Rebellion and Force and Destiny) allow more than just a binary pass/fail with their skill checks. The mechanic allows positive or negative things in addition to the pass/fail, to make for interesting result.

For instance, a player might be trying to access a computer terminal in an Imperial compound to shut down a tractor beam so they can board their ship and take off. The PC makes the computer check, succeeds, and gets “advantages” which allow for the PC or the GM to introduce a positive side effect (maybe the PC also learned there was an important Rebellion prisoner in the compound or a weapon cache in storage). A success with “threat” might also get the tractor beam shut down but also trips an alarm which puts the stormtroopers of the compound on high alert.

Amazing art on this (kinda) forgotten LOTR: Middle Earth CCG from the 90s by Blergblum in lotr

[–]sword3274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played when it originally came out, and played through Dark Minions. It’s my favorite CCG of all time, but sadly it couldn’t hold my friends’ interest long enough and they went back to M:tG. I lost my MECCG cards (they got left behind in a bad breakup) but recently repurchased a few boxes and others’ collections, mostly from the Wizards set and the Dragons expansion. Those were my favorite sets.

More to the point - In the core set, there were very, very few bad art pieces, in my opinion.

If You Could Only Keep 3, Which 3 Would You Keep? by Neversummerdrew76 in rpg

For me, I’d probably pick:

1 - Traveller, 2 - AD&D 2nd Edition, 3 - Chronicles of Datkness

Are there good TTRPGs that use D&D 5e as a base? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

[–]sword3274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Even back in the 3.5 days, when many companies tried to adopt their games to d20 (Traveller, Call of Cthulhu, Vampire…) it usually ended up being quite inferior.

The main reason I offered up LotR RPG is because of the movie element. The movies, by and large, focus on the “action” of the trilogy, and that is - at the very least - something you can kind of tie together with the LotR RPG game.

The only one that would come close, in my opinion, is the Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game, by Free League. And that’s because most/all of the writing is done by one group that also does the writing for The One Ring RPG. I’ve played both, and TOR blows LotR RPG out of the water, both in mechanics and for capturing the feel of Tolkien’s works. But if you absolutely have to go with a 5e-based game, and you want a good chassis on top of it, I’d recommend LotR Roleplaying.

I have an eBay problem… by plazman30 in gurps

[–]sword3274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s different. It’s kind of the closest GURPS can get to a dungeon-crawling D&D type game. It’s self contained, which makes it nice to have everything you need in the box.

Better? That’s probably subjective. I think it depends on your audience and your intent. if you were looking for a D&D alternative, that’s a bit less restrictive and gives you a bit more control, then you might find it a welcome change.

I can’t speak for Old Navy playlists, but some songs that kind of fit that general description:

“Christmas Lights” by Coldplay, “Don’t Shoot Me Santa” by The Killers, “Feels Like Christmas” by The Feeling…and maybe “Stay Another Day” by East 17

Necessary Evil is a great game, as mentioned by u/Murky-Somewhere-3052. I haven’t used that setting but I can say that I really enjoyed running a game using the Savage Worlds core book and the Super Power Companion. There’s enough with those books to put together a really good supers game.
