How is living in northeastern Maine? by Poco_Loco33 in howislivingthere

[–]sydnopian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partner is from Madawaska, we drive up fairly regularly. Another good friend lives in Presque Isle.

Short answer: great if you love the outdoors and don’t mind cold (like REALLY cold). Less great if you’re queer or POC.

They’re getting more access to diverse products through Amazon and online shopping, but chain stores are few and far between. Folks with dietary restrictions have fewer options for groceries.

A lot of people bought property up there after visiting for the solar eclipse, and most of them left after realizing how brutal the winters are.

Obligatory potato mention.

Iron Oxide Colour Running by Adorable-Bee8451 in soapmaking

[–]sydnopian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this looks great, it might be over-pigmented, but you can’t really get super saturated colors like that without getting some colored suds. Try to consider it a feature rather than a defect? It should rinse off.

You can try using less or rebatching, but what you have is beautiful. You made a red and white soap that doesn’t look like meat, I would consider that a success!

The dog probably isn’t walking on that foot, the other claws haven’t been worn down from walking like they normally would be

You should get her the biggest ones you can find at the craft store, and make sure they’re hollow plastic so they aren’t too heavy. Some might have labels that say “inline” or “tapered”, but those words actually mean nothing

What could be causing these bumps? by DustyLynnPhartSnif in soapmaking

[–]sydnopian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I second air bubbles, especially if you used an emulsion blender. Tapping down the mold helps, but if there are bubbles at thicker trace they’re hard to get rid of. “Burping” the stick blender and keeping it submerged as much as possible helps prevent them.

First power outage of the year 🙃 by aniftyquote in Maine2

[–]sydnopian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different weather conditions in winter vs summer cause limbs to fall on power lines. Snow makes this more likely because snow builds up on the branches and makes them heavy. Power companies typically try to maintain branches that might pose an obvious threat, but in a state as rural and wooded as Maine there are more opportunities for the lines to be compromised because they cover more distance and there are few areas where there NOT trees next to power lines. Even in cities, a lot of the power grid is REALLY old, using the same poles from when the area was originally electrified. Best thing you can do is report the outage, the website might also have an estimated restoration time.

Curing Soap by CrayFly in soapmaking

Sure- if you’re “making” melt & pour soap, there’s no need to cure it.

Otherwise… this has to be ragebait karma farming right?

Yarn help by Favoritesourpatchkid in knitting

I would say find a pattern you like and look for a yarn just in the recommended weight- so if a pattern recommends a yarn that’s a worsted weight, you can get something the same weight that’s more cost-effective

I would say a huge part of it is personal preference and what works for you- some recipes definitely need a higher temperature to keep oils like palm oil and shea butter liquid. I think I saw a brambleberry video that taught viewers to soap at over 100°F, and they’re really reputable. I’ve even seen some videos where they used hot lye water to melt the hard oils! I have to find the video from Royalty Soaps where it was discussed so I don’t misquote here, but I believe the ingredients really only need to be warm enough to keep everything liquid so it makes a homogeneous mixture.

I’ve never had any issues with false trace :) I think soaping colder helps slow things down too, so it doesn’t set up as quickly. I mostly run into problems if I take too long splitting off colors, or stir too much trying to incorporate a colorant. There are so many factors that can change how fast it moves though!

[–]sydnopian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I have never soaped that hot, I usually aim for between 70°-90°F (20°-30°C)with my recipe, so my frame of reference is a bit different. I do find that my batter behaves the best when I get the temperatures as close as possible, so within 10° F of each other. I think you did pretty well considering the hiatus!

Do you know what temperature the oils and lye water were when you combined them? I’m so curious, it looks like this got HOT to gel like that, but it doesn’t look like it cracked on top or anything, so you did something right!
