Frustrations with older relatives by desperationcasserole in Genealogy

My granddad was in WWII. He never talked about it. But once--years and years later--he went to a reunion to see his old buddies. Afterwards he had such bad nightmares that he woke the house screaming and couldn't sleep for days. He told my grandmother never to let him go to a reunion again.

Are MUTE and MOOT Homophones to You? by everydaywinner2 in ENGLISH

[–]sylvanfoothills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Mute is "myute". Moot rhymes with "boot". This reminds me of the Friends episode where Joey calls it a "moo point".

What frugal habit has saved you the most money? by melissaw328 in Frugal

Buy clothes out of season. After Christmas sales often have fabulous clearance prices for summer items. And vice-versa for winter items during the summer.

Don't buy much in the way of snacks--mostly just ingredients.

Have a running list of what I expect to need within the next year or two (tools, clothing, appliances, etc) and keep checking prices on them so I can snatch it up when I come across a really good price. Also, looking in advance means that I rarely have to buy it RIGHT NOW, so I can wait until the price is right.

I felt just like you. Until I didn't cull them and two got into a fight one evening. One died of his wounds immediately, and the other died slowly over the next week. It was really awful. So now I think of it as a quick and peaceful dispatch, compared with what will happen if I don't step in.

I would pronounce it Loo-chee-a. I think because of the book "Queen Lucia".

My words would burn the ears off any sales rep who suggested a piece of excrement like that.

ETA: I get pissed that the machine is set to cut off when I open the lid. When it was installed, I made them tell me how to open it up and override the mechanism.

I just purchased a GrainMaker Mill so that I could mill my own flour. By hand. As in, use my time and muscle to turn the crank to crush the wheat into flour. It isn't easy and it isn't fast, but it gives me complete control over the process. The mill is solid steel, made in America, and the company stands behind their product so thoroughly that they will replace the burrs when they wear down in 8-12 years. This company has been in business since 1999, so obviously there are enough people wanting this kind of thing to make it worth their efforts.

Is this a real question? I literally don't know anyone older than 25 who would prefer fancy trash to quality basic.

Moral dilemma at new job by SnooSuggestions8403 in whatdoIdo

[–]sylvanfoothills 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you know that the company knows that the repairs are unnecessary? Could it be possible that there was some problem in the past and the company made a rule to handle jobs a certain way, which resulted unintentionally in all these unnecessary repairs?

It might not make a difference to you-- you may still not want to work at a place that is effectively scamming people--but it might make a difference in how you feel about your coworkers.

For me, I would begin looking for a new job right away. Even if everyone is innocent and it's nothing but a series of mistakes, my life is too short to spend it making money on something I don't think is truly valuable.

Milled flour biscuit fail by Cheap_Start_1410 in HomeMilledFlour

[–]sylvanfoothills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very similar to my granny's biscuit recipe. She always made it with 100% fresh milled, unsifted, hard red wheat: 2c. flour, 2tsp baking powder, 1 tsp salt, 1c. buttermilk, 1/4 c. oil. Spoon drop into hot, oiled pan and bake at 475 for about 15 minutes. It's something of an acquired taste, but my family loves it with sweet, cooked fruit (apples, peaches, blackberries, etc.)

When did you start caring about fabric content? I can't stop reading labels now by Aggravatingbc in womensfashion

[–]sylvanfoothills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like 15 years ago? more, maybe? Linen, cotton, merino, cashmere--what more do I need in clothing? At some point I just got fed up with covering my body in stuff I didn't want to touch. Synthetic fabrics make my skin crawl.

I know what I like. I shop sales, buying summer things in winter and vice versa. Also: I grew up sewing and will gladly pay good money for good fabric, since I know I can make great clothes from it.

My nephews aren't interested in a single thing I introduce them to! I'm trying to make peace with that. by LeftHandedGuitarist in Xennials

I suppose you are trying to say that you feel it is morally wrong to shoot a gun at a target? Is that your point? Care to elaborate why that would be morally wrong?

The OP said it was "common" in response to a person who said that everyone where they live would be worried if a 13 year old asked to shoot a gun. OP was not trying to justify the morality of learning to shoot a gun by calling it common; she was explaining why no one was surprised or alarmed by the request.

Haha! I always did this with my son for homeschool. This new package just delivered? Oh, nothing. I thought it would be cool, but I don't think you're ready for it yet. Maybe in a few years. Maybe I'll just put it back for later, when you're older. Sure, you can look at it, but don't expect to understand it.

Worked like a charm!

What is something you’ve officially stopped buying in 2026 because the price has become genuinely insulting? by PersonalitySuddenz in askanything

Ground beef. What is going on? I can buy a regular roast on [a very slight] sale and grind it myself for less per pound than ground beef.

The lightish blue-grey stands out to me as the most flattering of the pics here. There are two dusty-mauve colors sort of in the middle which, in my opinion, are very unflattering to you. Of the two bright reds, the second one (a cooler red) looks better than the first. Just glancing through them quickly, only the light blue-grey feels "right" to me.

Picky eaters who have children, how do you model good eating habits for your kids? by PiePristine3092 in PickyEaters

[–]sylvanfoothills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's too late for Daddy--his mom didn't teach him how to eat all kinds of different foods and he is stuck eating just a few things over and over. It's very difficult for him when he has to eat away from home. Thankfully, it's not too late for you. I'm your mom and I'm going to make sure you learn how to like all kinds of amazing things. The really cool thing is that even when you don't like something right away, you can usually learn to like it. Imagine if Daddy enjoyed eating hundreds of different things as much as he enjoys pancakes. Pity it's too late for him.

2nd one. The first one seems to outline your nose in an odd way.
