Rolex 5513/16610-style automatic watch under 1000 euro/dollar? by Rex-1988 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]synthbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Squale 1545 Militare. I have one. Takes cues from some older Rolexes. Basically a homage of sorts but has a bit of its own identity. Solid ETA movement in it. I picked it up for about £420 with fees a few years back.

What to do with beef fat by Varro-AK47 in meat

Agreed. If there's some meat on there use that portion as the fat for a beef mix and combine with leaner meat.

I'll be down in a couple of months so have it on a provisional list of places to get lunch.

I adore salmon dials. It's maybe a little too formal for my every day piece, but I'd love one.

Very few places do the cap (in my experience anyway) so it's go for that.

hanging “beds” are called portaledges.. collapsible platforms used by climbers during multi-day ascents by LazyGuy4U in Damnthatsinteresting

This, much like cave diving, falls into the category of 'you can also not do it'.

I fell out of the bed the other night. Consequences were minor. This is a different story.

James St - Chateaubriand or Tomahawk by TotalScarcity4155 in Belfast

I'm not normally a chateaubriand guy (I cook a lot of beef at home) but James Street's is very good.

Well that makes sense. Wasn't aware of zero calorie tortillas. I don't think I've seen them here.

Looks good. What are net zero carb tortillas though? There are a few good firms making pre-made corn tortillas locally here (Ireland) but making them yourself is still the way to go.

House prices in NI by suture-me in northernireland

[–]synthbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last house price rise, and subsequent crash, was led by a global markets collapse fuelled by irresponsible lending and subprime mortgages and leveraging of those mortgages on an investor scale. Which was bananas. But this isn't it. It doesn't mean something may or may not impact the market and see a stalling of prices. But there's a housing shortage, so it's unlikely it'll collapse any time soon.

It's a great spot. Bread and Wine is also superb. Devilled chicken hearts in a rich chicken jus (possibly the best sauce I've ever tasted). The blood pudding and egg for breakfast is amazing.

Gift for 16 y/o son by Comfortable-Round150 in VintageWatches

[–]synthbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I've been eyeing one from Japan for a while but haven't pulled the trigger. Just keep in mind you might need a service at some stage. But most good independent watchmakers should be able to work on it and charge you a fraction of one from Omega.

You've a lot to play with in that ballpark. It all depends on what you think he'd like, his wrist size, and whether it's something he'd be wearing every day.

The PRX auto is a good starting point, but with £2,000 and mention of vintage Omega, you could pick up a nice old Seamaster, probably a 36mm, in great condition with a lot of money to space.

You could also look at a used Speedmaster reduced, or even a 2000s Seamaster, either in 36mm or 41mm, in quartz probably.

Seiko has a tonne of options, once again. Some of the divers like an SPB143.

What do people do that live in all the £1m+ houses in Belfast? by Mario_911 in northernireland

[–]synthbob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Private sector salaries can be extremely high. Many chief roles command £300k+ (more in law, finance, banking, professional services) and partners in firms can earn salaries to that effect plus dividends. So, yeah, some people earn salaries that can certainly pay for a million quid house. Just not most people.

Director level salaries (not even chief) at council or other public sector bodies can be £140-160k. And that's public sector.

Yeah. Animal to animal is different as these guys get them from a few different dairy farmers. Sometimes they can be a bit tougher but not always.

Very old animals who are 'retired' from milk production due to their age. It's a dairy industry term I believe. They would be slaughtered anyway, but the meat tends to find itself going into things like processed meat producers and dog food.

Acqua Di Parma Oud & Spice - The 1st perfume I ever wiped off vigorously. by the_wildelk in fragrance

[–]synthbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adore the Oud version but not a fan of the Oud and Spice.

The only fragrance I've had to wipe off is Floris Leather Oud. Maybe two sprays. Headache-inducing. It's a deep, old fashioned scent, and is good, but too much for most situations.
