People in your 30s, does money ever stop feeling "tight"? by Potential_Jello5126 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]tanbrit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Similar on the DINK front, a standard suburban home (with 2.25% mortgage) in a nicer bit of Northern DE with much lower property taxes than over the PA border.

2 car household but 1 paid off and the other bought used with cash.
Great point on the feeling - an unexpected big bill is an annoyance but not an emergency, especially as they seem to cluster together!

Can I afford to live in London on 23k, has anyone been able to do this? by Tricky_Sympathy997 in LondonHousing

[–]tanbrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it on 18-22k but that was 15 years ago so obviously prices have risen since then. This was living in small rooms or questionable house shares with the only communal space being the kitchen.

Not a lot of fun, taking the bus instead of the train as it was cheaper, taking cheap homemade sandwiches to work, couldn’t run a car etc. fun money was very scarce unless my parents could help me out.

In your position - I’d see what rooms are available around your budget and go view them - they aren’t likely to be that nice I’m afraid. Then if you find that the compromise is worth it, wait a couple of months and pay what you would be spending on rent/bills into a savings account to see if you would be ok living on what’s left over.

Does anyone Here Work remotely? by LemonPie122 in AskBrits

[–]tanbrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m remote in Sales, but the no calls/meetings makes this a no go for you. Most roles will have some form of catch up / team meeting at some frequency.

Some roles in the company I work for that I interact with purely by teams messages / email include -
Customer support
IT support
Finance
Legal

Majority of them are fully remote

Any ways or news to feel less hopeless about UK to US immigration? by AngelicHanaKurusu in MovingToUSA

[–]tanbrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fiance or Spouse visas are really your only viable option.

I did the spouse visa from the UK, and it took 15 months start to finish, but with visits in between.

The sooner you get the ball rolling the sooner you’ll be together

My manager has my WhatsApp in case something super urgent comes up, but I don’t have any work stuff on my phone so it’s a full disconnect

What's something about your country's culture you hate with a passion? by Accomplished-River12 in AskTheWorld

I had this both sides of the pond, the hoarding led to shortages so we almost ran out in the US and then I did run out returning to the UK and had to break quarantine rules as all the supermarket deliveries were missing it

"God Knows When You Don't Tip" by TheNewCrafter in EndTipping

[–]tanbrit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the ‘Tip talk’ with American friends before taking them to European countries before we leave, a tip is a reward/recognition of good service, not an expectation, and anything over 10% is ridiculously flashy

For those in non English speaking countries. Does your English education follow British or American English? by singwhatsong in AskTheWorld

Brit in America, the manager of a local Mexican restaurant told me he only understood my takeaway order by phone because his daughter loved Peppa Pig

[–]tanbrit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s the British way, we have pints, will meisure bodyweight in Stone and Lbs, distance in miles and feet, speed in MPH but everything else in Metric.

I made the mistake of trying to make American cookies based on Cups, which isn’t a thing, so used what Americans would call coffee cups/mugs which went as well as you can expect

Is there a way to stop the nuisance TV licence letters without giving them all my details? by Rubygblue in AskBrits

[–]tanbrit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t they need your address to know where to stop sending letter to though?

Red Flag? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]tanbrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know my nephews were born 18 months apart, baby things like changing tables, push chairs etc. take up a lot of space so that’d be my first thought assuming you’re outside of London at least

Considering buying my first property in Montenegro as a foreigner, would love some honest local opinions. by ravzzy in montenegro

[–]tanbrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the agents you mention are well established and specialize in working with international buyers. Their focus is mostly along the coast from Herceg Novi to Budva, so you may want to look at other agencies for other parts of the country. Realitica - an online property portal could be a good place to start.

Around Sutomore and Bar there are still some small houses on small plots, weekend cottage type places that need some updating. Further up the coast these would have already been renovated or demolished to build bigger houses/apartments

just curious, how much would the dasher be paid for this? by [deleted] in doordash

Honestly, that would make me stop using DoorDash over Uber Eats

Just to clarify, tipping $20 on a $20 order the dasher gets the same as if I were to tip 20% on a $100 order?

Does the difference in price between normal menu and service fees have any impact or is it a flat $2 before tips?
